The project hosts a professional space at the ground level and private apartments on above levels.

If the professional space has direct views and acess to the street, the apart-ments access is given behind, in the other side developping a transition between pu-blic and private.

The volumetry of the facade is dea-ling with several thicknesses that create loggias and terasses, harvesting the sun. This allows more light and particularities to the interior space.

Located north from european par-liament, the whole area is for most of it a brownfield site. Just in the middle of two city suburbs, it reveals today a new face, regar-ding to the developping european neighbo-rhood just above.

The urban planning is designed around a main axis, from wich the buildings gradually shade into the preserved vegeta-tion, creating views and relations with it.

Public space and building are mostly located in the main axis in order to structure the whole area and create attraction for the people living around.

Redesigning a square, the project acts like a pedestrian filter. Some elements get through, some others stop. They get through a vegetation and some public buildings which get denser in relation to the views and usage.

This project is based on a surrounding designed in an ear-lier urban planning project. Near the water, surrounded by an raw vegetation, this curtural centre hosts a various program: exhibi-bition spaces, amphitheater, ca-

feteria, mixed with reseach labs and scientific facilities.

This unique gathering of uses is a opportunity to make them interact each others, allowing interesting meetings

“Fabricating landscape”: this is what the project deals with. As an opportunity to learn parametric architecture and digital fabricating tools, our concept was to design a canopy that adapt itself to any sur-face, any ground. From the “back bone” like floor structure to the arcs, everything can change in the de-sign.

With a constant back and forward between the parametric model and the actual one in the sandbox, the

project evolves through several stu-dies and tests.

The canopy is made from several arcs, each one based on a cate-nary curve in order to optimize the stresses and material. Intersecting each others, they form a continuous structure that stabilises itself.

The floor is designed from a single component, which can be assem-bled, forming a walkable structure.

2222

Page 23: Architecture Portfolio

23 23

Page 24: Architecture Portfolio

This project is based on early diagramatic modeling, using simple pieces of paper first, then digital fabricating tools. The project is constantly evolving between the software and the fabrication, learning from the physi-cal observations of the fabricated object.

From a flat sheet of cardboard, this object can now create a new surface, and adapt itself with various kinds of shapes.

The parametric model learns from it, seeing for example how this system is behaving when it has to follow a specific landscape, like this sandbox.

BENDING MATERIALS

Understanding the wood’s bending pro-perties, the project tries to build a struc-ture with the most efficient use of mate-rials and human ressources. This work is based on the precedent project, «from landscape to canopy», and tries to go further in the details and a larger scale.

The parametric design based process allows flexibility for the shape and the arcs. If the work is based here on a simple shape, the process can be applied to

more complex structures designed from an actual surrounding.

Cut with a CNC mealling machine, the arcs are designed in the parametric mo-del to find back their shape when they are bended during the construction, ac-ting like they memorize the initial shape. The interconnection between them and the several layers increase the stiffness of the structure.

Due to the normal orientation on each point of the central curve, each arc follow the main de-signed shape, allowing them to freely intersect each others.

To keep the timber’s fiber orientation in the ten-gant direction of the arcs, and to deal with a big scale, the arcs are made from several layers cut from a CNC mealing machine and stuck toge-ther.
