Brahma the Super CreatorBrahma is the God of Creation. In the Hindu pantheon the statuette of Brahma which is placed at the Charutar Vidya Mandal office was originally consecrated at Nagara (the ancient Mahinagara, prominent port during 1st century AD) before it was destroyed in 11th century AD.

This statuette is believed to have been created sometime during the 8th or 9th century AD.

Greetings from TEAM CVM & SMAID for a noble cause of Design Education !India, at the beginning of the new century, is at a challenging crossroads. The acceleration of Change, caused by economic liberalization, Global communication revolution and a youthful demography ( 54% of the Indian population is in under 25 and 70% below 35 years of age ), has brought us to a point in our history which is both challenging and at the same time full of opportunities. It calls for sober investigations into the values India holds clear and her aspiration to be an equal and leading member of the Modern Global society of nations. These values and aspirations are inseparably linked with the quality of her man-made environment and the objects and buildings that are the icons of the emerging modernity. India is a society which is refusing to dump her traditions on the way to modernity; in fact there is an interesting dialectic relationship between traditions and modernity. While the traditions which are still valid need to be reinterpreted in the light of the aspirations to be Modern, modernity itself will have to be redefined afresh in the context of India’s traditions. This dialectical relationship between tradition and modernity is the most exciting aspect of India’s continuing struggle to design and build relevant new icons for an ancient civilization and a young nation. In order to make this investigation meaningful and relevant and its restatement through appropriate

design, it will be necessary to investigate the idea of Design in contemporary context. This establishes that Design is a necessary vehicle for a Society’s transformation from traditional to modern and that a Designer is an agent of CHANGE in the society; a public intellectual - crafting the material world to communicate ideas of a better, more equitable and a humane world to live in. In practical terms, it is the responsibility of the design profession not only to train the next generation of Designers but also to create the climate in which work of the designers is seen and understood, i.e. raise the design consciousness and sensibility of the society at large.S M A I D begins with a belief that the best design occurs at the intersection between theory and practice, in the reciprocity between intellectual discourse and the practical exigencies of the moment. This calls for bringing together multiple fields of knowledge to bear on the question. It will also be necessary to bring together intellectual and practical work which will validate each other. Design is inherently, a humanistic enterprise and not merely a technical discipline concerned with solving today’s problems through the application of increasingly sophisticated and seductive technology. We do not consider technology as a value neutral. While the global communication revolution has brought into sharp questioning India’s craft based value system, she must participate in this dialogue by presenting herself as an alternative ‘others’ and therby enriching the debate“ The future of the design profession is the first glimpse in the schools of design and it is in the design studio that its future contours are determined – like a larger society, the school both serves and shapes the profession. ““ Our school’s most precious gift is its generosity toward the thoughts that the next generation has yet to have....! “ The education and training program of SMAID offers full vertical integration of the training sequence in various stages of design learning. It also offers several points at which student can exercise choices among various available career options. Young students will have a wide range of possibilities which may help them determine their career paths. But whichever career they choose, from a professional designer, a teacher they will carry level of sensitivity toward a well designed environment and low tolerance for disorder.

Message from the Principal's DeskA flexible framework for student- centered learning, whereby courses and assignments are able to harness the potential of each student in terms of creative expression and multi dimensional learning: SMAID is created and rested on this premise. The objective, learning value and standard for each course are pre- determined but context and relevance is repositioned by the faculty depending on the changing realities of the design profession and the level of professional competence achieved and demonstrated by the each group of students.

Each course introduces the various stages involved in a design process through broad based investigation, site visitation, precedent study analysis, synthesis and communication by use of different methodology in each stage. The earlier part of the program focusses on broad understanding of the fundamentals of design, relevant skills & acquiring exposure & experience through a structured & instruction based curriculum. However, the students are encouraged to take independent but well- informed design decision during latter half of the program through various studio projects.

The various programs at SMAID provide the necessary direction, stimuli, and facilities to foster maturity & thereby discover their individual identity, ability & potential.

We strive for an Institute that involves all its stakeholders, where ideas are communicated freely and exchanged in a constructive and congenial spirit.

We train and educate our students to take responsibility for their own learning and promote an attitude of lifelong learning.

We strive to instill in our students, a respect for and a desire to enhance the environment in which they live.

We value responsiveness to the needs of our stakeholders, the highest of moral and ethical standards, honesty and accessibility without discrimination, a quality service orientation and a caring approach to all.

Why Design? Why Architecture ?

Architecture is the visual shape of society. Architecture is the matrix of human civilization. It explores new ways of living, new technologies and materials, and strives to ensure that new buildings, towns and landscapes are environmentally sustainable. Architecture combines art, science and technology in the design and construction of buildings and their surroundings within a socio-cultural context. Architects engage themselves in all aspects and stages of the architectural process from design, through planning to construction and management. They are involved in projects of a diverse nature, including the design of domestic, retail, leisure, health, commercial, industrial and educational buildings, towns and urban landscapes.

The study of Architecture provides opportunities to develop a wide range of transferrable skills. Students will have rich experience of working in teams, working to deadlines, developing abilities in verbal and graphic communication and most importantly, skills in creativity, design and innovation - the essential ingredients of success in the contemporary economy.

Architecture itself provides exciting and widely varied career opportunities. Students after their graduation may specialize in certain types of building design, or concentrate on a particular area such as design, technology, energy efficient building design, architectural conservation or project management etc. Graduates may work as part of a team in private practice, or in the architectural wing of a large commercial set-up or in Government Department or Local Authority.

Today we all operate in a globally competitive and constantly changing environment. Being contiguously influenced and challenged by increasing economic integration, technological innovation and advances. It is important to take notice of these constant changes and define an appropriate response in terms of creating enabling design for whatever we use may it be products, environment, methods, systems etc. which is, aligned to the economic, social and environmental development needs of mankind. Design education is an attempt to give future designers a larger view of how design fits in the real world. It provides designers with the analytical, conceptual and creative skills required to create various designs.

Today we need an abundance of designers, creative thinkers and practitioners. Without individuals who think differently, who can re-imagine reality and reinvent the rules, we will never be able to address the complex challenges. Creativity not only enhances our culture, it broadens our vision, deepens our understanding, and enables us to innovate, improve and grow. Design is a field with rich tradition and philosophical underpinnings. Design education is a program to equip designers with the necessary skills and provide clarity to the study of design.

Interior Architecture and Design is concerned with the production of spaces that communicate vision and purpose and which grow from an understanding of the dynamic and ever changing relationship between people, activities and places. As a practice it focuses on creating memorable experiences that contribute to the diversity and richness of Contemporary life.

The opportunities within the design industry are extensive and the course has an emphasis on creative practice to enable graduates to take full advantage of future possibilities. These range from working in large design consultancies to working independently in small-scale practice. The type of work is diverse and includes retail and leisure design, offices, showrooms and exhibitions as well as private interiors,

Students gain an insight into spatial composition, constructional techniques, and explore contemporary visual culture as a source of inspiration and ideas. We see Interior Architecture and Design as a profession where spatial design acumen meets the worlds of Culture, context, technology, lighting, colour, exhibitions; and new media. Practitioners as creative designers draw on and explore this rich world of possibilities in order to create stimulating and memorable interior environments.

Why Planning ?

We live in times in which our urban and built environments are undergoing unprecedented change. As cities continue to evolve, innovative policies and practices are desired so that development is equitable and sustainable.

Planning, development and management of human settlements is becoming an increasingly important task. As a result of technological advancements and integration of societies and economies of the world, planning of cities and regions has ever become very complex. Professionally trained town and country planners are therefore needed in order to evolve new options for the development and management of human settlements.

Planning is a conscious as well as sub-conscious activity. It is an anticipatory decision making process that helps in coping with complexities. It is deciding future course of action from amongst alternatives. It is a process that involves making and evaluating each set of interrelated decisions. It is an assortment of missions, objectives and transformation of knowledge into action. A planned performance brings better results compared to an unplanned one.

A plan can take a variety of forms including strategic plans, comprehensive plans, neighborhood plans, regulatory and incentive strategies, or historic preservation plans. Planners are often also responsible for enforcing the chosen policies. The modern origins of urban planning lie in the movement for urban reform that arose as a reaction against the disorder of the industrial city in the mid-19th century. Urban planning can include urban renewal, by adapting urban planning methods to existing cities suffering from decline. In the late 20th century, the term sustainable development has come to represent an ideal outcome in the sum of all planning goals.

Urban Planning is a discipline, which collates inputs from various disciplines into an integrated plan of action for shaping the natural and built environment in order to achieve a desirable quality of life in urban areas by keeping the resource constraints in view. Regional/spatial planning gives geographical expression to the economic, social, cultural and ecological policies of society. It is at the same time a scientific discipline, an administrative technique and a policy developed as an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach directed towards a balanced regional development and the physical organisation of space according to an overall strategy.

The primary objective of the internship is to allow students the opportunity to observe and participate in the operation of successful Architectural Design businesses. Semester VIII : This semester focuses on development of mass housing and its related aspects like, landscape design, understanding of acoustics and typical structural systems, the type of infrastructure and building services needed for urban requirements of mass hSemester IX : The semester emphasizes on Urban design issues, civic architecture and

urban space-making and its related skills. It focuses on the methodology of urban studies adopted by various designers through a series of precedent studies. This module also provides a foundation in research methods and initiates dissertation research. Semester X : The final semester of the Architecture Studio sequence culminates in a thesis-based project. Having completed a series of seminars on history, theory, materials, color, services and environmental studies and construction, students choose their own topic of focus. Pursued in the thesis will be an approach to the subject matter wherein students claim various areas and aspects of Architecture and built environment as their own. The projects are intended, in part, to set

the course for the students' mode of inquiry after graduation.Research and critical analysis of historical, theoretical, cultural and practical issues form the basis of the development of a design brief. Students then examine through precedent studies and the multi-layered user group analysis, their own design attitude and approach. The design project is developed through-out the semester of work, with each week seeing the addition of another layer of development and solution. The criteria for site-building/s selection and the eventual occupation of that building is the self-directed responsibility of the student and becomes one of the layers of in-depth study and intervention.

Semester II : Studio II introduces the student to processes that are commonly used to organise

and support study, research, analysis, and studio design projects in Interior Design. The Studio intends at developing design vocabulary with residential setup as the core function.Semester III : Studio III focuses on the development of a design vocabulary of non-domestic interiors and on development of specific and appropriate technological knowledge for the design project: identify the relevant standards and regulations relevant to workplace and simple retail design.Semester IV : Studio IV emphasizes on handling corporate/Institutional Interior Design projects. It further tries to expose students to

various modular furniture to meet the demands of corporate sector.Semester V : This course emphasizes the relationships between material properties, structural principles, construction processes and interior architectural forms. Lighting, acoustics, the application of materials and the graphic articulation of these connections will also be an important component of this course. This course continues the advanced study of the interior design process through development, detailing and preparation of execution or working drawings for Interior design proposals.

will be able to apply acquired subject matter and career/professional skills in a real and practical situation within the Interior Design field. The main objectives of the internship are to allow students the opportunity to observe and participate in the operation of successful Interior Design businesses. The students will gain experience needed to enter the field upon graduation.Semester VII : This Studio has two components that focus further on the design of furniture and the advanced design of interior space. Associated with previous study in

construction, and details, this course explores profound issues in interior design practice. Design VII offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience the complexity of design. Emphasis is placed on the apparent integration of the various concerns that are typically balanced in design work, including conceptual, functional, programmatic, material and construction, technical, lighting, fire fighting and safety, landscaping and other services.Semester VIII : The final semester of the Interior Design Studio sequence culminates in a thesis-based project. Having completed a

series of seminars on history, theory, materials, color, services, environmental studies and construction, students choose their own topic of focus. Pursued in the thesis will be an approach to the subject matter wherein students claim various areas and aspects of Interior Design, and more, as their own. The projects are intended, in part, to set the course for the students' mode of inquiry, further after graduation. Research and critical analysis of historical, theoretical, cultural and practical issues form the basis of the development of a design brief.

Students then examine through precedent studies and the multi-layered user group analysis, their own design attitude and approach. The design project is developed through-out the semester of work, with each week seeing the addition of another layer of development and resolution. The criteria for site-building/s selection and the eventual occupation of that building is the self-directed responsibility of the student and becomes one of the layers of in-depth study and intervention.

The latest additions at New Vallabh Vidyanagar is the work on setting up there, a college for Language studies, Diploma-degree Pharmacy college and a centrally air conditioned new engineering college is progressing at a supersonic speed. It is the dream and vision of Dr. C. L. Patel that the campus be spread over 300 acres in its final phase.
