DETAIL BOARD 2: BRIDGE ACROSS RAVINE & PEDESTRIAN / CYCLE BOARDWALK AT GREY POINT FORT

To the north of Grey Point Fort, the proposals seek to establish a 4.0m (w) x 290m (l) raised timber boardwalk. A raised boardwalk is proposed so as to minimise disturbance

of the tree root systems. An example of this style of boardwalk from Limburg in Belgium is illustrated below (right). The boardwalk can be supported on a series of slender

piles which requires very little excavation; the boardwalk route and foundations can therefore be designed to take the path of least resistance through the trees.

As part of the proposals at Grey Point Fort, a 4.0m wide, 68m long steel pedestrian / cycle bridge is proposed to span across the ravine. These proposals combine to provide

a high quality route between the paths on both sides of Grey Point.

MATERIALS

The boardwalk can be constructed from pressure-treated timber or steel. A combination of the two materials may provide the optimal solution; steel supports with timber

cladding or CorTen steel can be used to provide a structure that is sympathetic to the setting, with minimal visual impact.

The bridge across the ravine is steel, similar to that proposed at Royal Belfast Golf Club (refer to Detail Board 1).
