Planned Activity Group Our first trip for the month was to see

the movie The Lady in the Van. The

Lady in the Van tells the true story of

Alan Bennett's strained friendship

with Miss Mary Shepherd. Mary was

an eccentric homeless woman

whom Bennett befriended in the

1970s, before allowing her to

temporarily to park her Bedford van

in the driveway of his Camden

home. She stayed there for 15 years.

As the story, develops Bennett learns

that Miss Shepherd is really Margaret

Fairchild (died 1989), a former gifted

pupil of the pianist Alfred Cortot.

She had played Chopin in a

promenade concert, tried to

become a nun, was committed to

an institution by her brother,

escaped, had an accident when

her van was hit by a motorcyclist,

for which she believed herself

responsible, and thereafter lived in

fear of arrest.

Our Cuppa for Cancer guest

speaker this year was Mr Ron

Penrose. Ron spoke of his passion for

painting portraits and during Ron’s

presentation he demonstrated his

skills of producing a portrait from a

picture of Albert Einstein which is

now proudly displayed in the PAG

room. We raised a grand total of

$192.30 for cancer research. Thank

you to everyone who supported this

event.

After a lovely lunch at the Centre

we had a busy afternoon making

sensory bands. A sensory band is a

pocket or glove that has

attachments such as buttons and

ribbons added to it for patients to

twiddle in their hands. The quiz

master, Mary, did a great job

organising the afternoon’s questions

and answers.

Other events for the month are a

quilt display by Marg Thompson,

Cuppa for Cancer at the Pigeon

Ponds Hall and the Doris and Shirley

Show at the PAC in Hamilton.

Men’s Shed have been very busy

each Thursday afternoon, filling

orders for garden seats, steps and

lots more. Community members are

most welcome to come to the Shed

on the 2nd June to join us for a BBQ

lunch.

This month at the

Balmoral Early

Learning Centre

We have welcomed our new team leader Keira Dickerson

this month. She has been working here for a few weeks

transitioning into the role and getting to know all of the

children and the centre. Welcome to the team Keira!

All of the children have thoroughly enjoyed playing with the

hairdressing experience. They have been using it many

different ways. Some of the children have taken it over to

our natural experience with the African animals and

dressed the elephants with the hair ties and clips – the

animals looked so pretty!

Jessie has been teaching the children about healthy food

and the healthy food pyramid. Some of the older children

thoroughly enjoyed learning about where the foods go on

the pyramid. They were so curious about the different food

pictures and what they were.

The children have had a big interest in drawing these past

few weeks. Some of the children have started to copy

different items and draw them on their page. These children

were so proud of themselves to accomplish this.

Tallie Talay

Respite Carer & Case Management

Why is it so important to exercise our brains? Our brains are composed of different areas and functions, and we can strengthen them

through mental exercise- or they get atrophied for lack of practice. The benefits are both

short-term (improved concentration and memory, sustained mental clarity under stressful

situation), and long-term (creation of a “brain reserve” that help protect us against

potential problems such as Alzheimer’s).

What are 1 or 2 things that are

guaranteed “brain drains”? – High-levels of anxiety and stress, that are

guaranteed to distract us from our main goals

and waste our limited mental energies.

– A very repetitive and routine-driven life, lacking

in novelty and stimulation. We have brains to be

able to learn and to adapt to new environments

The trick therefore, is to take on new challenges

that are not way too difficult/ impossible, and

learn how to manage stress to prevent anxiety

from kicking-in.

What are three easy and quick mental exercises that

everyone should be doing daily? – For stress management: a 5-minute visualization, combining deep and regular breathings

with seeing in our mind’s eye beautiful landscapes and/ or remembering times in our past

when we have been successful at a tough task

– For short-term memory: Try and remember our friend’s telephone numbers.

– In general: try something different every day, no matter how little. Take a different route

to work. Talk to a different colleague. Ask an unexpected question.

Approach every day as a living experiment, a

learning opportunity.
