LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTChances are you noticed something different on the cover of this edition of 360. Of course, I’m talking about the new Symitar® logo. While our current branding scheme has served us well for more than a decade, we feel it’s time to update Symitar’s look and feel to something more reflective of our prominence in the marketplace – something big and bold.

Developing this new branding was an interesting exercise. Working with a consultant who specializes in rebranding, a team of Symitar executives had to answer questions such as, “If your company were a car, what kind of car would it be?” or “If your company were a television network, which network would it be?”

The answers to these questions helped the consultant understand Symitar better, but in the end, I have to say I think they helped us understand Symitar better, too.

One of the fruits of this labor is what we call our “I Am” statement. It’s a statement about what we believe differentiates Symitar from its competitors. I think it’s pretty important, so I’d like to share it with you here:

I am innovative technology that truly enables credit unions – that adapts to the needs of the credit union rather than forcing the credit union to adapt to the limitations of the technology.

I recognize that our only truly sustainable differentiator is our commitment to world-class service and the manner in which we conduct business, treating each client the way we expect to be treated, and the way they in turn treat their members.

I fully believe that all of this is only possible when we hire the best and brightest in the industry, and treat those employees with respect and professionalism.

I hope you’ll agree that this is pretty much what Symitar is all about. I give you my personal promise that we’ll try our absolute best to live up to these words day in and day out.

You’ll begin to see our new logo – as well as new Episys® and CruiseNet® logos – more and more over the next couple months. The rollout will be complete when we relaunch our website prior to SEC. In the meantime, if you have any questions or comments, please let me know.

It’s coming your way soon – the latest Episys release is expected in August. When you load the release, Episys Quest™ is the only user interface available. The Episys for Windows® interface (EWI) and Symulate (text interface) will no longer be available or supported.

In addition, Microsoft® .NET Framework 4 Full Profile must be loaded on all workstations to run Quest. You can download and install this free software before you load the Quest release. Prior releases required .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1.

This final move to Quest ensures that all of our Episys clients are on the same interface. Since its initial release in 2010, Quest has proven successful in a variety of environments in both small and large credit unions. Users appreciate the look and feel of the new interface – the new, streamlined navigation and “favorites” feature allows clients to customize the application.

If you haven’t already done so, be sure your third-party vendors are aware that EWI and the text interface will no longer be available. These changes affect any third party that does screen scraping or telnets into Symulate to access Episys. Symitar® does not support these integration methods and third parties are responsible for finding alternatives.

We’re excited to take this next step forward in our technology evolution. Please visit the For Clients portal for more information, including the Episys Quest FAQ, Quick Start Guide, and the Episys Windows and Text Sunset FAQ. You will find helpful information including updated hardware and system requirements.

A Sampling of Enhancements From the New Release Release Download Option This option enables customers to download and install the Episys upgrade directly to their systems without burning it to media. It’s similar to downloading and installing service packs.

GL Next Account Period Balance Here’s a feature that uses general ledger data more efficiently and effectively. In this release, the balance sheet accounts display for GL inquiries. The current GL month and year display for GL inquiries, GL account revision, creation screens, GL Subaccount records, and GL Account Tracking records.

ATM Dialog Card Masking This enhancement makes the masking of card numbers in the ATM Dialog window consistent with the way the system masks card numbers in other parts of Episys. It increases card number security while retaining the ability of credit union staff to make card-related account inquiries.

Loan Accrual Status This offers additional controls for the accrual and recognition of interest to the GL via the Dividend/Interest Accrual Report batch program. It lets you stop interest accrual on a loan to the GL that is past due by a number of days you specify. It offers the ability to supersede default behavior on a loan-by-loan basis for loans that are identified as well secured and in the process of collection

OFAC Verification of Corporate Checks This feature allows you to conveniently check the payee name for an OFAC match on Corporate Checks within the Check Wizard.

PCI PA-DSS File Monitoring This enhancement lets you record the creation and deletion of files during Episys service pack and release loads. Additionally, you can extract event log information in an industry standard format (comma-separated values [CSV]) and export it from Episys.

For three quarters of century, state employees in Florida have had a credit union to assist with their financial needs. The $300 million institution is based in Jacksonville and serves more than 22,000 members. We spoke with Chris Boivin, VP of Communications and Business Development, to get the latest news.

Can you give us a short introduction to State Employees Credit Union? Yes. We’re one of the few credit unions that serves state employees in Florida. All state employees can join. We have five branches, and we’re the only credit union in the state with branches in state buildings. We recently opened a branch in a Department of Education building. It has a new design concept, with teller “pods” for better interaction with members.

What services or products are working well for you? One of our newest programs is our own Visa® card. We’ve had good success with the launch, which was August 1, 2012. Within the first several months, we had 1,200 cards issued and we’re very pleased with that. Five years ago our Visa card went out to an outside processor, but we’ve come back to in-house processing through JHA Payment Processing Solutions® (PPS). With in-house, it’s easier to make adjustments to fit what our members want.

We like giving something back for using credit and debit, so we have the PPS Extra Awards® rewards program that’s been very popular. We offer cash back, travel rebates, and gift cards. Cash is the most common choice.

We added awards to our debit card, too. We started rolling with the Visa card and meanwhile let points accrue on the debit card without telling our members about it. Then after 60 days we surprised them by announcing that they’d been accruing points on debit. We give more points if they make a signature transaction instead of using a PIN with the debit card. That gave us an educational opportunity to explain that there is an advantage to using “the pen” vs. their PIN.

I understand you had a special card for your 75th anniversary last year. Yes, we had a diamond card designed as part of the celebration. It’s a great distinction to offer a diamond card instead of the typical platinum. To note our 75th anniversary, we gave 7,500

points for the first transaction on the card. That equals a $50 gift card or $50 in cash. We doubled points on balance transfers and offered a 3.99 percent rate for the life of the balance. There were celebration events and promotional items. Our members really liked it.

What strategies are working to increase member growth? Although social media and email have their value, I find that nothing works like person-to-person contact. Face-to-face communication and member advocacy are the best. Because our members are state employees, we don’t have community marketing opportunities. Our challenge is to find ways to target prospective members. We try to build relationships through outreach or partnerships with state organizations. When they invite us in to talk, we bring current members who will speak for us. Satisfied members do the marketing for us.

An example of our outreach involves a state-run school for middle and high school students – the Florida A&M University Developmental Research School. We invited art class students to submit artwork to decorate our new branch office. At the same time, we put donation jars in our branches to raise money for the school’s art club. As a result of that partnership we were invited to a benefits fair, and brought in eight new members.

What are you plans for the future? We’re going to be offering the CreātaCard® program through PPS and expect that will be popular. We’ll also be offering mobile banking. Younger people are quickly accepting the idea of not needing a branch. Mobile provides an easy way to bank without branches or ATMs.

The $426 million Superior Federal Credit Union stands out from the crowd. For members of this Lima, Ohio based institution, Superior FCU offers a competitive array of useful products. At Symitar, the credit union stands apart by being such a stalwart participant in Episys® beta testing. We spoke with Susan Wagner, VP of Operations, to learn about both.

What member programs and services are particularly successful for you? There are several that stand out. Mortgage lending is one. Our in-house and CUSO program has been the leading mortgage lender in the county for the past several years. We service over 8,000 mortgage loans on the FICS system using Episys RTA [Real Time Access].

Another service is the in-house credit card program and debit card program we offer to our 49,500 members. Two years ago, we added DataCard’s in-house card production solution. It gives members more choices in card designs, including our “school spirit” cards, which promote over 30 area high schools.

We also offer full brokerage and trust services as well as small-business offerings that include SBA lending and deposit services. Recently we started Superior Insurance Services, which will be offering auto and home insurance to our members.

What do you think is the key to your success with these products? Our products are designed to be very competitive in the marketplace, providing members value for their money. Also, because of the depth of our product offerings, we do not have to refer members to other institutions to meet financial needs. We can be the one source for trusted financial solutions.

Let’s talk about beta testing. Why does Superior FCU volunteer to be a beta tester so frequently? We like the opportunity to explore the developments that are being offered in new releases. By being a beta tester we devote time to exploring new Episys product functionality. Sometimes we do not implement the functionality immediately, but we have a better awareness of initiatives introduced in releases. Without beta testing, we would probably not dedicate the time to exploring release enhancements.

How much time is required by your IT department to handle beta testing? Loading patches is the most time-consuming part of being part of beta. During the course of beta we may have 12+ patches

which require loading into a test SYM and then live when directed by the SAM (Software Acceptance Management) team. Overall, this probably averages 2-3 hours a week during the beta process. Loading the release into test and live would be required regardless of being part of the beta process.

What are some of the benefits you’ve received from being a tester? There are several projects over the last few years that would have been much more difficult in implementing had we not been involved in the beta process. Some that come to mind include the Overdraft Privilege Reg E opt in, online card blocking rules, and in-house credit card processing.

Would you recommend beta testing for other credit unions? If your credit union likes to get the most from its processing system, yes. In our case, our sales manager has a habit of coming up with some very interesting promotions. We’re sometimes challenged to find a way to make them work in Episys. Beta testing has given us the opportunity to work with the software in ways that we would not have otherwise. If you have a staff that enjoys a challenge and the opportunity to experiment with what the system can do for them, then beta can be a good experience.

You can try to guard every component of your storage area network 24 hours a day. You can use every security technique available. A time may come, however, when a disaster or theft exposes your server’s hard drive to the world, or a retired piece of hardware accidentally ends up in the wrong hands.

Full-disk encryption (FDE) erases these worries. FDE uses self-encrypting disks that keeps data secure even after removing the drive from the server. FDE uses a set of encryption keys installed on the disk subsystem. Because the encryption is on the disk drive itself, the CPU maintains optimal performance even while security is enhanced.

Symitar offers the IBM® DS3500 Express® as an ideal storage machine to work with your Episys® core. The DS Storage Manager provides key management, using a single authorization scheme that applies to all self-encrypting drives

in the server. The storage manager maintains and controls the key linkage and communications with the drives, secures drive groups, and even initiates an instant secure erase feature if desired.

It’s a trend. Many in-house CruiseNet users are finding a strategic benefit in outsourcing their data processing to JHA OutLink Processing Services™. What’s driving the migration? Decreased workload is a big factor. With automated, offsite operations, staff arrive at work to find tasks such as ACH, credit file

downloads, and recurring entries already accomplished. After they leave at night, jobs such as share drafts and credit card uploads

occur on their own. This benefit enabled MPD Community Credit Union in Nashville to reduce a full-time position to part-time after

moving to OutLink.

For small credit unions, having to be physically present for processing and uploads can be a drain. The staff must organize their lives

around the demands of processing tasks. With CruiseNet outsourced, that constraint is gone.

Another big motivator is the reduction in hardware purchases and maintenance. Dealing with server issues and installing software

upgrades is an expense these institutions can do without. Jackson ACCO Credit Union in Jackson, Mississippi found using OutLink

more cost effective than buying servers and dealing with hardware depreciation.

Data security is also an important issue. With Symitar storing and backing up critical data, credit unions worry less about data loss from

storm damage or accidents. For St. Tammany Federal Credit Union in Slidell, Louisiana, the peace of mind provided by secure offsite

storage is incalculable. Before OutLink, credit union staff had to physically carry the server to a car and drive it to safety when

a hurricane threatened. Now it has the ability to continue operations from any Internet connection.

The final factor in making the data center switch is member service and growth. Staff time that was once filled with busy work and

task processing is redirected to members. Creative, member-focused activities replace upgrading software and tinkering with servers.

How Do You Protect the Mobile Member?

Just a few years ago our definition of “distributed capture” revolved primarily around merchant and branch capture. Since then, that definition has expanded dramatically. Capture points now include consumer scanning (at home), smartphones, and phone-to-phone processing. What a difference a half-decade can make!

For those of us in the industry, we always keep transaction fraud at the forefront of everything we do. Back in the dark-ages (circa 2005), that meant running scanned items through a local hot-file or against some national database. Life was simple.

What do you do with a member who is constantly on the move? One who is scanning from her living room on Monday, her office on Tuesday, and her smartphone anywhere anytime? Or the business member who wants his funds ASAP, regardless of where they come from?

How do we meet the needs of these two individuals without exposing them or the credit union to risk? Oddly enough, the answer is a combination of old and new technology: 2005 meets 2013.

Let’s consider the woman mentioned in the third paragraph – we’ll call her Karen for the sake of discussion. Her home business requires her to be on the move and accept checks at the same time. Her strategy until now was to get to the branch or night drop whenever she could. Usually that meant a mad rush to a branch on a Friday afternoon.

For Karen, the use of a home scanner, smartphone, and even image ATM capture are a dream come true. Yet the credit union still needs to guard her transactions from fraud, just as if she walked into a branch to do them. In her case, we need to be able to manage all of her channels (home, smartphone, and ATM) with one fraud system. Some immediate areas of opportunity are:

• Duplicateitems.Thiscouldbefraudulentoraresultofheraccidentallyscanninganitemathomeandalsoviasmartphone. We need to catch that quickly and notify her so she doesn’t count on the same funds twice.

• Hot-filesandnationaldatabaseinformation.Thismayfallintotheoldtechnologycategory.Theabilitytoscanearlierinthe process allows us to leverage this technology at a higher level. We can be proactive vs. reactive.

Those are just two examples of how we can offer Karen what she needs while protecting her interests and the interests of our institutions. Karen is no longer rushing to the branch on Friday. She is a happy member that can’t imagine life without these services.

Also in the third paragraph, there is the business owner who wants his funds ASAP. Let’s call him Kevin. He and his son Chase own a business that is low margin and inventory intensive. Chase is the sales-minded one who wants to see money in the bank. He views accepting checks as a way to bring in more customers. Kevin is more cautious and concerned about exposing the business to the risk associated with checks. When done right, a single fraud management system can make both Kevin and Chase happy. It needs the following features:

• Uniformity.Applythesamefraudtechnologytoeverycheckregardlessofitsorigin.

• Comprehensiveness.Includeeverychannelandbeopentofuturechannels.

• Speed.Earlyscanning+earlyfrauddetection=lessexposureforall.

At the end of the day, we need to give Karen, Kevin, and Chase what they need. At the same time, we have a responsibility to our organization. In the world of technology, 2005 is a lifetime ago. In reality, the right approach still takes advantage of what all technology, new or old, has to offer.

It’s time for your voice to be heard. Vote for your favorite enhancements! ESP (Enhancement Submission Process) is JHA’s online tool that makes it easy for you to submit enhancement requests. We have updated the ESP interface this year to improve the user experience.

The voting period for Episys is open for your discussion and voting through midnight Central Time, Monday, May 13th. Here’s how ESP works:

• IntheSubmission phase, you can submit enhancement requests for the products licensed by your credit union. Submissions in this phase are only visible to you.

• DuringtheInitial Review phase the product managers review the enhancements to identify duplicates, check for existing functionality, and clarify items with you. When the Initial Review phase ends an Enhancement Catalog is created, which is a collection of all submissions that have been approved for voting. The Enhancement Catalog is published in ESP and is viewable by all users.

• IntheDiscussion phase, you can view submissions from all institutions, use the discussion boards within ESP to discuss enhancement ideas with other users and Symitar analysts, and lobby for your favorite enhancements.

• DuringtheVoting phase (the current phase for Episys), you can view all submissions from all institutions and vote for the enhancements you’d most like to see. You can continue to use the discussion boards to collaborate and exchange ideas and preferences about enhancements.

• Aftervotinghasended,aVoting Results Catalog is generated, and after the Final Review phase a Ranked Enhancement Catalog is published which contains enhancements that have been selected to be included in our roadmap.

To access ESP, you’ll need a login to the For Clients portal. If you don’t currently have access, it can be set up by your institution’s For Clients Administrator. User guides, online training, and additional information about ESP are available on the ESP page of the For Clients Portal under the “Tools/Administration” tab.

Symitar is pleased to introduce a new Limited Release testing program that provides client testers early access to the beta release media and allows you to test and review content at your own pace.

Symitar simplified the former Limited Release testing program to make it easier for credit unions to participate. The new program does not require testers to load beta patches or follow the full release testing schedule; however, clients are strongly encouraged to report defects using the standard beta defect reporting process.

Limited Release testers have access to the cross-functional Episys Beta Triage team and to the beta SharePoint site, which is a central location for testing resources and project documentation.
