Are you rejuvenated? Ready to lead your club? Motivated with new ideas?
If not, you missed your chance at the
The GREAT news this month is that we officially have a new LIONS
CLUB!!! I received the notice that SPRINGFIELD AREA LIONS has
been approved by Lions Club International! Statistics tell us that every
Lion member affects the lives of at least 70 people. That means that with
at least 24 charter members, we, as Lions, can affect the lives of a minimum of 1680 more
people! Isn't that awesome! I also think it shows that we CAN get new Lions in our
communities. We often talk about how we would like and need new members for our clubs.
We need to go one step further and decide to do something about it. We need to sit down and
make out a list of potential new Lions and then go talk to them about what Lions stand for and
what they do for our communities and for our fellow man. If we tell them about all the great
things Lions do instead of just asking if they would be interested in joining our Lions Club, we
WILL get new members! We also need to look at our service projects and see if they are still
considered relevant by our community. Make sure that they are not just fund raising projects
in disguise. People want to know that what they do will make a difference to others and to their
community.
I am writing this from the USA/Canada Forum in Omaha, and as usual it is a great
opportunity to Learn a lot about Lions in a very short time. You not only gain a lot of
knowledge about Lions but you get to meet some of the greatest people in the world. Multiple
District 5M won an award for having the highest number of Lions attending! If you could not
make this Forum, don't despair, you still have the opportunity to attend our first MD5M mini
forum! It is going to be held in Mahnomen, MN and will be just one day in length but it will
have, l believe, 36 different topics presented. I am sure there will be more about this elsewhere
in the newsletter.
One final thing, we found out today that Lions Club International has been nominated for
the Nobel Peace Prize! We will be only one of perhaps two hundred nominees so our chances
of winning this award are small but to even be in the running is really a great honor. Without
the effort of each and every one of you this would not have been possible!
Together we can...........!

It seems the biggest problem we are
dealing with as Lions Clubs is member-
ship. It's always difficult to bring new
members into our clubs, and it may be
that our biggest problem could be our
very own fault.
While recently visiting a local Lions Club I heard DG
Larry speak of the need for our clubs to do a better job of
promoting ourselves. It was then that I realized how true
that really is. It's a fact of human nature that people attract
to a winner and the band wagon will always be full! But
we ARE winners. It's just that not enough people seem to
know it… yet.
Do you speak of your clubs successes whenever you get
the chance? Does your club regularly place an article in the
local newspaper, with a picture? Do we involve ourselves
in every public event that we possibly can? It’s these kinds
of things that get us noticed, that puts us into the public
eye, and that is surely where we need to be to attract more
members.
I realize that as good Minnesotans we shy away from
the lime light, that our actions ought to speak for
themselves! But that's not going to be enough in this case.
Even if it does seem a little unnatural, we really need to
reach out and, as the DG said, “toot your own horn”. If we
can do that, people will begin to show interest and our
numbers could really start to grow. So, talk about this at
your next meeting and make a plan to start promoting
yourselves better. It might just be exactly what we needed
all along.

Lions: PLEASE remember that all Lions Clubs, that have annual gross receipts less than $50,000 MUST file the
E-Postcard. Please note that this is an IRS requirement. This has to be filed online, and for most clubs it must be filed
before November 15 of this year (there are a few Lion Clubs that have a calendar year as their fiscal year and your club
must file each year by May 15).
To file, the easiest way to do it is to go to the following website: http://epostcard.form990.org Once you are at the site,
you need to have the following:
1. Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). Your secretary
should have this, or you can get it for your club on the LCI website, www.mylci.org, then pull up your club; it will
have the number listed. This is a nine digit number.
2. Tax Year Use July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016
3. Legal name and mailing address
4. Any other names the organization uses.
5. Name and address of the principal officer.
6. Website address if the organization has one.
7. Confirmation that the organization’s annual gross receipts are $50,000 or less.
8. If applicable, a statement that the organization has terminated or is terminating (going out of business).
You MUST complete this every year. If you miss for 3 years, your club loses it’s tax exempt status and you must pay a
reinstatement fee to get re-registered. Avoid the pain, make sure that this is done at the latest by Novermber 15 of each
year, but do it early in case there is some glitch that needs to be dealt with.

Lion Hanna Elshoff Visits
New Ulm Lions Club
Hanna Elshoff is a Lion from Chatfield,
Minnesota who came from Germany after
surviving WWII. Lion Hanna Elshoff credits the
American soldiers for saving her family from the
Nazis. As a proud American and grandmother,
and at the age of 73, she travels the United States
on her Solar-Pedal powered Bicycle. She is a
fervently committed Lion. Hanna told the New
Ulm Lions Club about her dream of peddling
across the USA to visit as many Lions Clubs as
possible.
One of her dreams was realized when she
visited Plains, Georgia to have Jimmy Carter sign
her welcoming letter which she received when
she became a citizen of the United States. Jimmy
Carter holds a special place in her heart because
she thought, only in America could a farmer run
for president.
Hanna has promised to return to New Ulm with
her bike next year. You can invite Hanna to speak
at your club. She can be found on Facebook or
contact PDG LeRoy Levorson.
You can read more about her story on page 14
of the October 2015 issue of Lions magazine.
Well here it is late September and harvest is just around the corner. This is your Can-Do-Canines chair sitting here as the rains are again falling. I am starting to set up some club visits for the coming year. I will be in Canby on the 10th of November. I would sure like to meet with your club sometime during the year. Here at Can Do Canines we were preparing for Woofaroo & Dog Video Festival that was held on the 17th of September. Will let you know how much was donated in the next newsletter. Here is a little info on one of our recipients Judy Lundy & Hearing assist dog Pepper. For 36 years Judy Lundy tried to cope with her hearing loss by using increasingly high-tech hearing aids. When she needed additional assistance her husband Steve kept her in the loop during conversations with others or let her know about the sounds that she missed. Judy did her best to cope after Steve's death. Living alone she continued to pursue her career as a senior business analyst at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Then Judy realized she was missing sounds more and more frequently; friends and family worried Judy would not hear the doorbell or phone or even an intruder. One day on the way to work Judy noticed downed branches and trees. There had been a severe storm, but Judy had not heard either the extreme weather or the sirens. The incident caused her to search online for information about assistance dogs. That search led to Can Do Canines and ultimately to the cattle dog mix. Judy was matched with a Hearing Assist Dog Pepper, a cattle dog mix who had been donated to the program by the Animal Humane Society. Pepper showed that special confidence and alertness that Can Do Canines trainers look for when screening shelter dogs. “Nothing bothered her and she was very easy to motivate with a variety of options,” Trainer Laura Waudby says. “Pepper was a social butterfly!” After weeks of training Pepper became Judy’s new second set of ears. Pepper nudges Judy and alerts her to the phone, doorbell, smoke detector, timers and possible intruders; then Pepper leads her to the source of each sound. Judy feels more confident in her daily life with Pepper along and reconnected to a world which—for many years—she was unable to fully hear. This has reopened a new, wide world for her. “Pepper has changed my life, not just as an assistance dog, but with the companionship,” Judy says. “She is so adaptable and loves to work.” Soon after being partnered with Pepper Judy experienced additional hearing loss in her right ear, resulting in even more sounds becoming indiscernible. Throughout this transition, Pepper’s presence has been both helpful and comforting as Judy copes with new challenges. Judy is grateful for the peace of mind Pepper provides as she moves forward and the increased independence an assistance dog has granted so far. These are stories as to how we touch people’s lives. Please keep us in mind when you do your budgets and help to keep this great project moving on. That’s all for this month I will be talking to you next month. PS As always if you are in need of a program give me a call.

We have a new club in District 5M3.
An organizational meeting to start a new Lions club in Springfield was held on August 11th at the Springfield
Community Center. There were 14 members in attendance. There are 24 members signed up at this time. The
purpose of the meeting was to get the club organized before a formal charter night is conducted. The new club
name will be the “Springfield Area Lions”. The group then made a list of potential projects that the club could
work on. The youth, the elderly and the community were the main themes and a list was made for each. Some
very good ideas were the result of this effort. Officers were elected, with Deb Rasset- elected charter president,
Linda Anderson- secretary, Mary Salonek- treasurer, Craig Valentin- 1st VP, Gilbert Anderson- 2nd VP, Sharon
Stern- 3rd VP, Phil Weller, Craig Valentin and Corey Brand on Membership Committee. The New Ulm Lions
will sponsor the new club. Lions Mike Appel, Milroy and LeRoy Levorson, New Ulm will be assigned as
Guiding Lions for the next two years. They will attend all meetings and provide help if needed. A tentative date
for a Charter Night is set for Saturday November 19th.
