Variety and beauty, both natural and cultural, make Austria a (geographically) small jewel in the heart of Europe. Simply walking along one of the many cobblestone lanes, visiting a small country church, or standing awe-struck before a magnificent country abbey, brings you face to face with history and culture.

During the 640-year reign of the Habsburg Empire, a few vivid symbols were brought into being, symbols that have remained alive and continue to define Austria in the minds of visitors today. Among these are the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lipizzan stallions of the

Spanish Riding School and the Vienna Boys' Choir

It happens time after time. People understand Europe the way they've been introduced to it - The usual tourist meccas, the attractions on a thousand postcards. Then they remember Belgium, the little country, they passed through a few days ago. It seems beautiful, it's practically next door to Paris, London and Amsterdam, and they have 24 hours to explore it before heading home. Two hours later, they are in love with Belgium.Baroque architecture and a street named Meat & Bread; an exhibit of comic strips; and jazz until dawn-you could only be in Brussels. Don't miss the Grand'Place and its Gothic Town Hall; it is one of the most beautiful squares in the world. All our museums are uniquely rewarding but with 70 of them, you might want to limit your enjoyment to a special few.You get off the train in Antwerp thinking diamonds, and the first thing you see is an elephant. One of the world's most popular zoos is right next to the station. Bruges is only an hour from Brussels; climb the 366 steps to the top of the Belfry for a spectacular view of a perfect medieval fairyland. If the soaring spires of Ghent don't take your breath away, what's inside the Castle of the Counts will-a torture chamber dating from the 12th century.

Thank you for your interest in traveling to Britain. This land of tea and beer is also a land of heritage and tradition, richly endowed with style and culture. In fact, Britain is going through an unprecedented cultural renaissance at the turn of the new millennium. Along with the opening of more art galleries and museums than at any time in our past, several major millennium projects have now opened to visitors and more are planned over the next year or two.

Britain is the most popular overseas destination for Americans - Britain's history is familiar from schooldays and the cultural buzz and lifestyle from today's movies, television and music. Traveling from the US to Britain gets easier each year, as more transatlantic airlines add more services to British Cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow, as well as London.

A small country in the heart of the Continent, the Czech Republic is a sort of miniature Europe. Almost every architectural style and type of landscape is found here; the two exceptions are the desert and the sea (although the sea was once attributed to the country by none other than Shakespeare). The capital, Prague, has been given a number of loving epithets—"symphony in stone," "Golden Prague," "City of a Hundred Spires," Prague's unforgettable atmosphere lets you forget what century you're in; miraculously, it has survived wars and revolutions unscathed. The city's architecture is a merry jumble of styles—square, gold-tipped Gothic towers (hence "Golden Prague") stand next to opulent baroque churches and airy Renaissance palaces, sinuous Art Nouveau facades sparkle in the sun while baroque stone statues watch over pedestrians strolling across the 14th-century Charles Bridge. Prague has always been a major cultural center with no fewer than three grand opera houses, countless concert halls, galleries and museums. Café-going is a way of life, as is beer drinking; trying at least a few native brands is a must for every visitor.

it has to offer.

“Wonderful” Copenhagen is one of the world’s great walking cities. A cozy European capital, it’s filled with stunning architecture – classic and modern, historic sites, world-class museums, and some of the best shopping and dining in Europe.

Tops on the must-see list are the graceful statue of Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid and Tivoli Gardens, a charming all-ages “pleasure park” in the heart of the city.

After that, the choice is yours. Visit the Danish crown jewels at Rosenborg Palace. Shop on Strøget – the longest pedestrian street in Europe. Admire the eclectic art and antiquities collections at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Relax at the Botanic Gardens or one of Copenhagen’s many beautiful parks. Attend a performance of the Royal Danish Ballet. Or do all of the above.

Denmark’s smaller cities offer more to explore. Odense is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. Århus is a busy university city with great museums, unique boutiques and charming cafes in the historic Latin Quarter.

Or take a break in the Danish countryside, quiet and unspoiled thanks to the Danes’ love of nature and commitment to ecological consciousness.

Getting around couldn’t be easier. Danish trains are clean, fast and efficient. Highways are clearly marked and drivers are polite.

Because Denmark is so compact you can get from city to city, or city to country, in no time at all. That leaves plenty of opportunity to enjoy the many pleasures of this friendly “oasis” in Europe.

The German National Tourist Office is promoting 2 main themes in 2002: “Music-Land Germany: Living Culture,” and “Romanticism on the Rhine.” Germany is renowned the world over for its classical music. With such famous composers as Bach, Beethoven, Wagner and Weill, there is perhaps no other country with such a rich musical heritage. In 2002, the states of Saxony and Bavaria are teaming with the German National Tourist Office to promote “Music-Land Germany,” and both states feature a host of events covering all musical genres.

200 years ago this year, the stretch of the Rhine River between Mainz and Bonn was discovered by the artists and poets of the Romantic Movement. Their emotional depictions of this majestic landscape made the Romantic Rhine Germany’s first tourist attraction. Join us in celebrating the 200th Anniversary of this wonderful combination of landscape, art and culture in 2002!

Although it is characterized primarily by lowland plains, its landscape includes mountain ranges, freshwater lake districts, primeval forests and more than 325 miles of seacoast. The dry continental climate makes for pleasant and rather temperate weather. The population stands at about 40 million. Poland, a parliamentary republic, is integrating its economic system with a flourishing market economy, and has achieved one of Europe's highest gross domestic product growth rates.

Warsaw, the capital, abounds in memorable attractions: the Old Town, the Barbican defense walls, the Royal Castle, the baroque glories of Wilanów and the Ghetto Memorial. The city's splendor was lovingly restored after World War II. Today, Warsaw is the exciting center of the country's economic revitalization.

Kraków was long Poland's capital. Its history, said to have begun at the end of the 10th century, reached a zenith under Casimir the Great in the 14th century. In 1977, the city's spiritual leader, Karol Cardinal Wojtyla, was elected Pope John Paul II. A tour is an unforgettable step into the past, from Wawel Hill with its palace and coronation chapel, to the grand Market Square ringed by St. Mary's Church, the Cloth Hall and Jagiellonian University, whose illustrious students include the great astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.

Gdansk is where a series of shipyard strikes in 1980 gave birth to the Solidarity movement. The city has been restored to its medieval grandeur. Among the attractions are the Neptune Fountain, Town Hall, the picturesque waterfront and the Solidarity Monument at the former Lenin Shipyard. Zakopane, a year-round resort center, is surrounded by the snow-capped Tatras, the high peaks of the Carpathian range. Long a mecca for sportsmen, it attracts hikers, campers and skiers.

The Mazurian Lake District is a favorite vacation area. This complex of 1,000 lakes of Ice Age origin is interconnected by canals. The area also abounds in nature preserves.

Warm by Nature. An independent kingdom since 1143, Portugal established its continental frontiers in 1297 and is among the oldest nations in Europe.

Situated on the extreme southwest corner of Europe, in the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal's position on the Atlantic coast soon determined our attraction to the sea. To the north and east we have open borders with neighboring Spain, whose people we usually call nuestros hermanos--"our brothers."

In 1415, the Portuguese set sail on an epic voyage that would make them the first to discover the ocean routes to India, Brazil, China and Japan, and at the same time founded settlements on the east and west coasts of Africa. This year we are commemorating the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil by the navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral with a series of festivities.

The nation's vast monumental, artistic and archeological heritage bears witness to 850 years of encounters with distant cultures, and also to the presence of many ancient peoples in Portugal (including the Celts, Suevians, Visigoths, Romans and Arabs).

The natural advantages of a sunny country with diverse geographic features have turned Portugal into a chosen destination for many holiday makers. It is an ideal place for water sports and golf, offering modern tourism facilities, as well as historic and personalized accommodations, such as turismo de habitação (less expensive lodging in private homes ranging from wonderful farmhouses to manor houses), the privately owned Hotéls de Charme or the government-operated pousadas.

According to figures released by the World Tourism Organization, Portugal ranks 15th worldwide in number of international visitors, reflecting their confidence in choosing Portugal.

For centuries, Portugal has maintained this greatest treasure: a reputation for hospitality that makes the country a haven of congeniality and safety.

They may indeed come as tourists, but they leave as friends and plan to return.

Bucharest – known for its wide, tree lined boulevards, glorious Belle Époque buildings and reputation for the high life – Romania's capital was once known as "Little Paris". In the late 19th century Bucharest was remodeled by French and French-trained architects. There is even a Triumphal Arch on the elegant Soseaua Kiseleff, a boulevard longer than Paris' famed Champs-Elysees. Today Bucharest is experiencing renewed vigor. The city's architecture remains one of its main attractions. Highlights include the National Museum of Art, housed in the former Royal Palace, the National History Museum, featuring the Treasury's splendid gold collection and Herastrau Park's open-air Village Museum, a stunning collection of village architecture and crafts from throughout Romania. Bran Castle – a Gothic fairy-tale structure also known as Dracula's Castle, and Peles Castle – one of Europe's most exquisite, built in 1883 for King Carol I, are within one and a half hours drive from Bucharest. The heart and soul of Romania are its remnants of medieval life and its peasant culture. Transilvania is perhaps Romania's best known province, immortalized in legend, literature and film as the homeland of Dracula. There are countless reasons to visit Transilvania including its dramatic landscape of rugged mountains, dense forests, dark caves and lowland valleys. The province is filled with medieval cities like Brasov, featuring old Saxon architecture and citadel ruins; Sibiu, with its cobblestone streets and pastel-colored houses, and Sighisoara – one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, adorned with a hilltop citadel, secret passageways and 14th century clock tower.

Maramures, an ancient province northwest of Transilvania, provides a look at another side of Romania. This is a land where rural farmers invite travelers into their homes to share a sip of "tuica" (a potent plum liquor) and a bit of homemade bread and cheese. Here the inhabitants have preserved to an amazing extent the rural culture and crafts of their Dacian ancestors. Elaborate wooden churches with tall spires and shingled roofs distinguish Maramures villages. Woodcarvings decorate the eaves, doorways and windows of houses. People still attach benches and boxes to their gates, to hold bread and water for passing strangers. East of Maramures, Bucovina is renowned for its painted monasteries, acclaimed as masterpieces of art and architecture. Their exteriors are covered with Byzantine-influenced frescoes of biblical scenes. Among the most notable are Voronet – built in 1448 and known as the Sistine Chapel of the East, Sucevita, Humor and Moldovita. Spring, summer and fall abound with events and festivals. In early May Bucharest is the host of a one-week carnival. In late July Sighisoara's streets are the stage for the annual Medieval Arts Festival. The Halloween is celebrated as nowhere else in the world, with special tours retracing the route of Dracula novel. Music lovers will especially appreciate the George Enescu Classical Music Festival as well as numerous folk-music and dance festivals

that take place, all year round, all over the country.

To travel to Spain is to experience sun, superb food, hospitality and joie de vivre, and yet it is also to discover the country's rich heritage of monuments and sights, the imprint of different civilizations that once made it their home. To travel to Spain is to journey through its singular and breathtaking countryside, to delight in the stunning, starkly contrasting scenery, to study the customs of its people and towns, and to share in the local fiestas and traditions. To choose Spain is to opt for diversity, to be the central character in what is sure to be a truly unforgettable trip. This is what makes Spain such a prized destination worldwide, and why the vast majority of those who visit it once, return... in order to share in the enjoyment of a climate, countryside and culture which embody a rather special way of life. History has left its traces everywhere in a country with a unique legacy: Prehistoric caves, Roman remains, Jewish and Arabic architecture. The awesome bloom of Roman and Gothic art, followed by finest examples of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, is just one example of the diversity that can be found in Spain. Not surprisingly, 30 Spanish sites are considered World Heritage sites by UNESCO. This contrasts with the thriving new trends in architecture that attract ever more tourists, like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao or the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. The art experience in Spain is completed by its extensive offer of museums, featuring the best from the classics to the most avant-garde painters and sculptors.

Turkey is a land that offers many vacation attractions. It is a country that appeals to all tastes and budgets, with a tremendous range of archaeological, historic, scenic and recreational attractions blended with the traditional warm hospitality of the Turkish people.

There are many sites to enjoy and explore, such as Istanbul, a magical city; Izmir, center of resorts and archaeological attractions; Central Anatolia, with the modern capital of Ankara; the ancient rock-carved cities of Cappadocia; and Konya, mythic city of the Whirling Dervishes. In addition to these famous places, Turkey offers the Turquoise Coast, with the sunny beaches and clear blue water of the Mediterranean; the Black Sea region, with lovely untouched beaches and fishing villages; and Eastern Turkey where vast mountain scenery and the remains of ancient civilizations invite exploration.

Turkey is the setting for the Blue Voyage. One can explore archaeological remains of ancient civilizations from the sea rather than from the land. This idyllic cruise sails the beautiful waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, which have become very popular as well as for their skiing, rafting and mountain climbing opportunities.

Shopping is one of the great pleasures of a trip to Turkey, and there are a wide variety of beautiful things to purchase: high-fashion leather and suede goods, as well as copper, brass, jewelry, ceramics and hand-woven carpets and kilims.

Turkey also provides many modern hotels, where you can enjoy your stay and taste the rich Turkish cuisine at affordable prices.

Turkey has everything to make your visit most enjoyable. We are waiting to welcome

you.
