AREA OF A LEAF
A. TERRIFIC TRICK
My teacher asked: “How can we measure the area of this leaf?”
I discovered this cool math trick! Would you like me to tell you about it?
Input YourAnswer
If YourAnswer = “Yes” then I say “Great!”
Else
I say “I know you’re kidding!”
End If
I say “Keep reading …”
Your friends are going to be amazed!
Here’s how I did it:
1. I used string to trace the perimeter of the leaf – it was 16 cm 2. I tied the ends of the string to make a closed loop
3. I stretched the 16 cm string to form a rectangle
4. I fit the rectangle on cm grid paper
5. Ta-da! The area is 15 cm2!
What do you think? I’m amazing, right?

B. FABULOUS FENCE
I have a new puppy. Yay! And, I have 20 metres of fencing
material, to make a rectangular pen. I need your help!
I want my puppy to have as much room as possible.
What should be the dimensions of my pen?

PIZZA PARTY
G. PIZZA PARTY PUZZLE
I need your help!
I have 16 small tables. They are square.
I’ll join them to make one large
rectangular table, and put chairs all
around, for my 15 pizza party guests.
I sketched this rectangular arrangement
of the 16 tables. The dots are the chairs.
1. Are there other rectangular arrangements? Can you help?
2. Does it matter which arrangement I use for my pizza party?

H. MORE TABLES
Wait! I found 4 more square tables. Now I have 20!
Help me sketch all the rectangular arrangements.
How many chairs will fit all around?
Which arrangement is best for my party?

L. MODEL IT WITH SCRATCH
Try the code at scratch.mit.edu/projects/158479066/#editor
Write to describe how you would edit this code so that it plots a
graph of the changing perimeter (rather than area).
Edit and run the code to test your idea.

M. QUICK QUIZ
Try the Area / Perimeter Quiz at
https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/96881204/#editor
Edit the code:
Add comments at the start, to
explain the quiz. For example:
Change the range of for length
and width. For example:
