ARCHITECTURE ACOUSTIC AT “ELBSCHULE” – HEARING AND COMMUNICATION TRAINING CENTER, HAMBURG GERMANY
ACOUSTIC DESIGN INTEGRATED IN RECONSTRUCTION AND ENERGETIC RENOVATION FOR CHANGE OF BUILDING USE
PROJECT INFORMATION
HISTORY
Hamburg International School was first establised in 1973 by Schlutz &
Partner Architekten Company. It was primarily made of concrete steel
frame and infill brickwork. In 1984, physical activity hall was built and in
1999 the school was expanded by a three-storey building, designed by
Stoermer Architekten Company.
PRESENT
In cooperation with the acoustic engineer office “Taubert und Ruhe
GmbH”, the transformation process of Hamburg International School was
planned, focusing on learning with hearing-impaired students. The project
started in 2011, which also involved physical activity hall, canteen and fire
prevention measures in both renovated and newly built constructions.
Commence: 01/2012
Complete: 07/2013
Type: Renovation, Change of use, Building for disabled people
Gross floor area: 10,800 m2
Project Address: Holmbrook 20, 22605 Hamburg

ARCHITECTURE ACOUSTICS
1. RECEPTION LOBBY
The ceiling is decorated with sound absorbing panels in alternative positions.
These are made of Knauf AMF ceiling-rafts, which effectively absorb noise
and are resistant to heat and moisture level changes. There can be easily
replaced when old and damaged.

Purpose:
- Sound reduction, noise prevention
- Decoration
- Reduction of ceiling height
Material: Compressed mineral fiber

2.CLASSROOM
Classrooms are installed with gyps ceiling to reduce noise. White ceilings reflect
light well. Light from LED lights saves electricity and does not cause glare. Besides,
the back of the class, in opposing direction to teachers, are panels for sound
absorption. This measure is great for big rooms where sound is often reflected.
Walls behind teachers’ back help delivering sound evenly to both front and back
seats.

Purpose:
- Sound insulation, Noise prevention
- Decoration
- Light Reflection
- Preventing Echoes and optimize room acoustics
Material: - Ceiling: Gypsum boards
- Wall: Polyester Acoustic fleece panels 50 mm thick

Floor carpets help reduce echos from 20 – 50 dB. Notably, a reduction of
10 db gives a feeling of noise reduction by a half, which also reduces stress.
No other Flooring material is better than carpet at sound insulation.
The computer screens are placed under the table to allow better
communication between teachers and students.

3. IT CLASSROOM
Acoustic walls in different colors (red, black) are attached to the floor and ceiling, or
free-hung on steel ropes. The combination with acoustic ceiling panels creates a
pleasant acoustic atmosphere.

This is a renovation project so the structure is maintained. 2-layer window it
prevents the penetration of noise from the environment such as street noise.
Also energetic solution for a higher isolation
Purpose:
- Noise preventing (external)
- Warmth keeping

Chair
Under each chair is a piece of porous sound absorber like from
foam to absorb sound.

7. CANTEEN
Sound absorbing painting/picture
It is made from a textile surface and a special acoustic core to lower the reverberation and support people concentrate
on communication and to create higher comfort. The painting is stretched on an aluminum frame and is flexible on
size and color. Under the painting can be a polyester material or several also absorbing sound and make it high
effective.
