After the Great East Japan Earthquake, Design Association NPO, the organizer and host of TOKYO DESIGNERS WEEK, organized the “ARIGATO PROJECT”, a program to aid the rebuilding of Tohoku through the power of art and design. This project strives to express gratitude for the support received from around the world after the earthquake and to say “Arigato” for people’s kindness. In conducting this project, Design Association NPO received kind support from many people, including teachers and students of the Onagawa Municipal Onagaqwa First Primary School and the Ishinomaki Municipal Kitakami Junior High School in Miyagi Prefecture, the Iwaki Municipal Chuodaiminami Elementary School, the Iwaki Municipal Izumi Junior High School and the Fukushima Prefectural Iwaki Sogo High School in Fukushima Prefecture, the Rikuzentakata Municipal Yonesaki Primary School and the Ofunato Municipal Ofunatokita Elementary School in Iwate Prefecture, as well as designers and artists who conducted workshops and musicians who held the charity music performance led by Takeshi Kobayashi of “ap bank Fund for Japan”. We hope to communicate the spirit of “Arigato” to the world through this book. From “Thank you” to “Arigato”

TOKYODESIGNERSWEEK

Celebrating its 26th anniversary in 2011, TOKYO DESIGNERS WEEK has become an established event for companies, designers, embassies, organizations and galleries around the world to present their products and initiatives to the Japanese design and art sector. Every year, this event is held with the theme “Love for the earth, Love for mankind, Love of things”, using Meijijingu Gaien as the main venue and involving the surrounding areas of Tokyo. In addition to design, TOKYO DESIGNERS WEEK also showcases contemporary art and music and offers various types of workshops , allowing everyone from children to professionals to experience a wide range of creativity. In 2011, the event saw a record number of visitors with 91,239 people in attendance, attracting people from the design and art fields, as well as from the media and the general public.

The o rgan i ze r o f TOK YO DES IGNERS WEEK, Des ign Association NPO, received strong recognition for its “ARIGATO PROJECT”, organized in an attempt to communicate Japan’s appreciation for the support it received from around the world after the Great East Japan Earthquake. As a result, the project extended further to include various forms of creativity like art, design and music. Works made in the ARIGATO WORKSHOP held in the Tohoku area were a lso exhibi ted at TOK YO DESIGNERS WEEK where many visitors were able to admire them. Many works were exhibited under the theme of LOVE/ARIGATO, sending a message of appreciation to the world. For

2011, architect Florian Busch was appointed as the creative director of TOKYO DESIGNERS WEEK. His background in architecture allowed him to design an intricate yet dynamic exhibition site. Star ting with a single-span 200 meter tent and followed by the outdoor container exhibition, the outdoor exhibition of the students’ work and various dome structures that houses forums and live events, his plan fully leveraged the characteristics of the exhibition site. Moreover, for the tent exhibition, the elimination of height limits for stands and the adaptation of a street-like layout created a brand new image for TOKYO DESIGNERS WEEK.
