l. Summary of my Activities and Future Plans
My academic interests can be divided into three main research areas: 1. Emotions in organizations, and teams. 2. Computer mediated communication. 3. Color and its effect on psychological distance and emotions.
I have published in the first two areas, separately, and at times managed to integrate both topics. I believe that my work has made a meaningful contribution to the field of organizational psychology as will be elaborated on below. Recently, I have started a new line of research related to psychological distance. It is my intention to continue researching and investigating the areas that spark my interest in order to make a continuing contribution to the field and fulfill my own curiosity. Emotions in Organizations and Teams
My research is aimed at understanding the social aspects of emotion. I have worked and am working on both theoretical and empirical aspects. This work involves field and lab studies where we investigate various emotions such as: anger, happiness and sadness. Specifically we have examined the effects that expressions of emotions by service providers as well as customers have on the targets of these emotion displays. Currently, I am working on a theoretical work related to human resource practices that could impact emotional performance of customer service providers. In addition I have looked at the effects that emotion displays have in sports; specifically looking at displays of emotion by pitchers in baseball and their effect on batters, as well as the effect of coaches’ emotion on their players in team sports. Computer Mediated Communication
I have studied the effects that communicating using computers has on individuals. Specifically I have investigated in-group/out-group formations due to media environments in virtual teams. We investigated behavioral interactions as well as the formation of communication norms based on the media environment and its effect on teams. I have also explored the effects of finding common connections with a stranger, when interacting online. In a set of studies we found that when strangers list more common connections they later perform better when working together. Color and its Effect on Psychological Distance and Emotions Drawn from personal experience, I have started to investigate how watching images in color vs black & white impact perceptions of psychological distance and emotions. It started when I was in Amsterdam and visited a site related to the 2nd World War. Relative to the rich and vivid history of Amsterdam, evident from its beautiful
Cheshin CV, p. 18
architecture around, I found that an historical event that was depicted in black & white (WW2) seemed more abstract, less concrete and further away in time, and less moving emotionally compared to historical events that were even older but were depicted in color. In a set of lab studies my colleagues and I have shown that images that are presented in color seem closer in time, move people more emotionally and were more likely to lead to action then images of events depicted in black & white. Future Plans
I would very much like to continue focusing and fine tuning my understanding of the social aspects of emotion as well as testing the effects of computer mediated communication. I am interested in investigating the effects of emotions on various aspects of organizational life. I would like to continue focusing on how emotional display impacts cognitive inferences, and affective reactions and behaviors, by manipulating variables such as displayer and intensity of various discrete emotions and settings. I believe that work is needed in the area of team emotion, refining understandings of the various effects emotions have on both team members and team processes. I am interested in pursuing a better understanding of the effects electronic mediated communication has on various psychological mechanisms and phenomena. I plan on continuing in these realms in the future, and hope to extend these also into understanding interactions of service organizations with customers and clients in digital environments. As far as my interest in psychological distance and color, I would like to expand my exploration to educational aspects, and see if coloring images from the past that appeared in black & white help make these events seem more vivid, concrete, moving and memorable. This study could also impact historical sites, and museum in how they present information, thus has a practical side. I plan on combining field and lab studies to help establish these findings. 12.
