The Sun Devils will look to build off their Sunday exhibition win over the Beijing All-Stars, and pick up their first regular season win of the year on Friday night. • Last weekend, the Sun Devils split on their opening weekend of play. 2017 QUICK FACTS SUN DEVILS LOOK TO PULL EVEN AGAINST THE AZTECSArizona State will look for their first win of the 2017 season in their Friday match against San Diego State. The two teams will meet for the ninth time in program history, with SDSU entering the contest holding a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series results. Friday’s meeting will mark the first match between the two teams since the 2012 season, where the Sun Devils suffered a 2-0 road loss. The two teams were scheduled to compete in the 2015 season, but a weather delay forced the game to be canceled.

PURFIELD TABBED TO MAC HERMANN WATCH LISTJunior Jemma Purfield has been tabbed as one of 30 NCAA Division I players named to the 2017 MAC Her-mann Trophy Watch Lists, announced by the United Soccer Coaches (formerly the NSCAA) and the Missouri Athletic Club during the preseason. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year’s winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Purfield, a Beverly, England, native, played the last two seasons under head coach Graham Winkworth at South Ala-bama where she led the Jaguars in goals (11) during the 2016 season en route to being named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year, as well as overall Player of the Year honors.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE A WAY OF LIFE FOR SUN DEVIL SOCCERThirteen Arizona State University women’s soccer student-athletes were recognized by the Pac-12 for their work in the classroom as the conference announced its annual All-Academic teams following the 2016 sea-son. Headlining ASU’s 13 honorees was senior defender Madison Stark (4.00 GPA – Journalism and Mass Communication), who earned first-team recognition for the second consecutive season. Junior forward Jes-sica Raybe (3.86 – Exercise and Wellness) and sophomore forward Natalie Stephens (3.89 GPA – Supply Chain Management) earned second-team recognition. It’s the second straight season that Raybe has earned sec-ond-team honors. Since 2007 the Sun Devil soccer program leads the conference in the number of first-team awards (26) and the number of first- and second-team awards (42).

MADER EYEING CAREER GOALS RECORD Senior Jazmarie Mader is quickly closing in on Sun Devil soccer history, knocking on the door of joining the top-10 all-time goal scorers in ASU program history. Mader currently sits just eight goals away from tying Karine Inoue (1997-00) for tenth all-time with 20 goals. ASU legend, Stacey Tullock (1998-01), leads all goal scorers with 50. Cali Farquharson (2012-15) was the latest Sun Devil to join the top-10 after closing out her playing career with 44 goals scored.

ABOUT THE AZTECS The Aztecs are 1-1 following the openeing weekend of the 2017 season that saw SDSU drop a season-open-ing decision at No. 9 UCLA before shutting out UC Davis last Sunday. On Friday, San Diego State and UCLA played a scoreless opening 36 minutes, before the Bruins punched through before the end of the first half. The second half, however, would be controlled by UCLA, who netted four goals to secure a 5-1 decision to open the season. On Sunday, the Aztecs bounced back with a, 1-0, win over UC Davis, giving head coach Mike Friesen his program-record 123rd career win in the Aztec’s home-opener.

SUN DEVILS PICKED 11TH IN PAC 12 PRESEASON COACHES POLLArizona State was picked11th in the 2017 Preseason Coaches poll announced in early August. ASU received 20 points in the poll. Stanford led the way with 119 points, followed by UCLA, USC, Cal and Utah to round out the top-five. The Sun Devils will begin conference play this season on Sept. 22 when the team will host Oregon State.
