LECTURES,
MASTERCLASSES,
WORKSHOPS
for all ages
We are delighted to welcome ARK - the largest modern and contemporary free to enter sculpture exhibition in the North West - to Chester Cathedral in 2017.
ARK is the largest sculpture exhibition in
the North West of England and features
90 sculptures by 50 internationally
renowned artists, including Damien Hirst
and Antony Gormley.
Our comprehensive public education
programme means you can be part of it too.
We expect to attract many thousands of visitors to the building to witness this extraordinary installation.
The arts play an important role in enriching learning and educational experiences. Learning through the arts for people of all ages can engage and inspire, support key educational outcomes and develop skills.
We are passionate about making the best in arts activity accessible to as wide an audience as possible.
We believe everyone, everywhere, should have the chance to access art and culture.
Our Education Partner, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, shares a similar vision. The Bank believes that the arts matter and that they are essential to developing strong communities and cultural understanding. Thus, they are generously supporting the education outreach for this special exhibition. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for making our programme possible.
We look forward to seeing you at our masterclasses, lectures and workshops. There really is something for everyone.
With every blessing,CANON JANE BROOKE
Education partner
ARK & education: PUBLIC PROGRAMMEIN DETAILMASTERCLASSESOur varied programme of ARK masterclasses provides an opportunity to explore the exhibition and its key themes in more detail. The sessions, led by expert tutors and practising artists, explore traditional and non-traditional art-making processes.
CHAINSAW CARVINGOver the course of four weeks, local artist Simon O’Rourke will work with a tree trunk to create a sculpture of an angel. Using his chain-saw, Simon will sculpt a figure in the cathedral grounds which will stand approximately 12 feet tall. It will be displayed for the duration of the exhibition. Simon will ‘live carve’ during each session as well as explaining his techniques and offering tips for beginners.
PHOTOGRAPHYIf your holiday shots of the places you visit disappoint, then this is the photography workshop for you. The workshop is aimed at amateur photographers who want to take the next step into using some of the manual functions and basic settings of their camera. Participants will explore the sculptures within the ARK exhibition and experiment with using natural light to capture them at their best and look at the composition of photographs. There will also be a demonstration on how to process and edit photographs to maximise their impact. Bring your camera and your camera manual. Workshop leader Helen Newall is Professor of Theatre Praxis at Edge Hill University where she researches performance documentation and performative photography. She also makes conceptual work in Photoshop, and animates photographs in After Effects.
CUT / CARVE / CAST SCULPTURE WORKSHOP With Dr. Jeremy TurnerThis workshop will allow attendees to get to grips with the age-old art of metal casting. Casting is the process from which solid metal shapes (castings) are produced by filling voids in moulds with liquid metal. The workshop will explore the basic steps involved in making castings - including pattern making, moulding, melting, pouring, shakeout, heat treating and inspection. Participants will then be given the opportunity to create a finished piece of work to take home. The workshop will take place at Chester Cathedral and the University of Chester.

WORKSHOPSAre you ready for some creative play? Our ARK inspired workshops are fun for all the family. Why not try your hand at clay modelling, felt making or den building?
3D PRINTING3D printing is an exciting new technology which creates three dimensional objects by forming successive layers of material under computer control. This workshop will allow attendees to watch a selected piece of sculpture from the exhibition be 3D printed before their very eyes following a programme written by University of Chester students. They will also learn more about 3D printing and its multiple applications and take a printed object home as a souvenir.
FELT SCULPTURE: 3D VESSELSThis workshop is an introduction to felt making for beginners. Participants will work through the stages of making and produce simple pieces of their own. The group will work on making a flat work (such as a fish) and a 3D vessel inspired by a sculpture (possibly a boat, a cup or a bowl) from the exhibition.
DEN BUILDING (OUTDOOR)Using natural resources such as wood, sticks, leaves and mud, this workshop will equip attendees with the skills to build a communal shelter or den of their very own. The dens will be situated on the Dean’s Field and their construction will focus on the theme of an ark as a place of shelter and refuge. The workshop leader will demonstrate building techniques and once the den is complete the workshop group will sit inside it and share a drink to underpin the communal feel of the shelter.
COMMUNITY NATURE SCULPTURE (OUTDOOR)Using natural materials like wood, leaves, sticks, sawdust, smallpebbles and gravel, this workshop will allow participants to unleash their creativity by producing individual or group sculptures on the ground. Group members will then be able to contribute to the collective larger sculpture or piece of nature art by threading, weaving and hanging natural materials in a free flow as and when they feel inspired to.

JUNK SCULPTURE (1) CHILDREN (INDOOR): THE ANIMALSThis workshop for children will focus on individual creativity. Participants will have access to a wide range of junk materials and, inspired by the sculptures in the exhibition, will be encouraged to choose to construct an animal that they would like to put on Noah’s Ark. Attendees can explore ideas around construction and assembly and will be encouraged to use junk packaging and text from magazines to collage their animals, giving them a context of consumerism, waste and pollution.
JUNK SCULPTURE (2) FAMILIES (OUTDOOR)Taking junk material as its starting point, this workshop for adultswill focus on experimenting with materials and being resourceful as an artist. Participants will use junk and surplus materials alongside more traditional media to make a sculpture inspired by the exhibition. Attendees will be encouraged to think about the application of their design ideas as well as experimenting with unusual techniques to customise found objects.
CLAY MODELLING (1) CHILDRENClay is a fantastic chance for creative play. This workshop will focus on modelling animals with tips on simple modelling techniques such as pinching, coiling and slabbing and surface decoration. Workshop attendees will begin by drawing the animal they wish to sculpt to learn more about its dimensions and will then start to create a model. At the end of the session, the models will be taken away to be dried and fired and participants will return for a second session to decorate their creations. Please note that this workshop comprises two separate dates.
CLAY MODELLING (2) ADULTSThis workshop will focus on the production of an ornate chest to represent the Ark of the Covenant that stored the stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were written. Using leather hard clay, participants will receive a demonstration on how to construct their box or chest out of clay slabs. They can then spend time decorating their creation. Please note that this workshop comprises two separate dates.
