𑐀 Origin: Began pilot in 1986 as a result of legislation

𑐀 Beginning: First class of 5 teachers who completed 4 weeks of summer instruction

𑐀 Site: One training site, centrally located where everyone attended

𑐀 Evolution: Has prepared a cohort of teachers every year from 1986 to today

𑐀 Present-day: 375 teachers who complete 360 clock hours of instruction, over two years

𑐀 Transformation: Eight regional training sites to attend close to home

in a classroom and, more importantly to demonstrate

how effective teachers design lessons, provide instruction,

build classroom communities, and utilize assessments to facilitate student learning.

Exit Requirements

Successfully complete two years of APPEL modules Successfully complete two years of mentoring and job performance Complete coursework as required Submit scorable portfolio to edTPA Pass edTPA OR Praxis PLT

ProEthica ® •Online interactive program that allows a candidate to work through real-life situations and make choices on how they would handle specific situations

•Aligned to the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE)

•First year candidates are required to complete the training prior to entering the classroom in the Fall

•In summer 2016, 140 successfully completed the training

edTPA in Arkansas •Arkansas funded a two year pilot starting in Spring 2014

• 2 Institutions of Higher Education and the APPEL program participated • In March 2016, edTPA was approved by the State Board of Education as an option for

the state-required pedagogical assessment •2015-2016 was first year that edTPA submission was required as a capstone experience for completion of the APPEL program

• Candidates with passing score did have to take a Principles of Learning and Teaching(PLT) test for licensure

• The APPEL program paid the cost for the edTPA submission • 142 submitted an assessment for scoring • APPEL will continue to use edTPA as an option for PLT • edTPA is now embedded throughout the APPEL curriculum
