What is the SMP? The Arkansas Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP), and its network of partners and volunteers, encourages seniors to prevent health care fraud by following three simple steps: (1) Protect your personal information. All a fraudster needs to steal from Medicare is your Medicare number; (2) Detect fraud by reading your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) or Explanation of Benefits (EOB) to make sure you received the services or products Medicare paid for on your behalf; and (3) Report to the Arkansas SMP, any suspicious use of your Medicare number, or any suspicious activity by scamsters knocking on your door or calling on the phone asking for your Medicare number, Social Security number or bank account information. Scam Alerts. Senior citizens are the #1 target of Medicare fraud and scams. The most prevalent and longest running scam going around the state is the Back Brace Scam. The scamster calls offering a free, “Medicare approved” brace of some type (back brace, knee brace, wrist brace, etc.) and then asks for personal information. Sometimes the caller has certain information already which makes the potential victim believe it is a legitimate call. For instance the caller may already know your name, your doctor’s name, or even the last 4 of your Social Security number, and they need you to provide or “verify” the rest of it. NEVER give personal information, or verify personal information, to anyone who calls you on the phone. You do not know who is actually on the other end of the line. AND, you cannot trust caller ID! The numbers are “spoofed” to reflect who they allege they are. Sign up to receive our quarterly SMP Newsletter for the latest scam alerts – www.daas.ar.gov/arsmpnl.html. Contact the SMP: The Arkansas SMP wants every ben-eficiary in Arkansas to understand that prevention is the most cost effective way to stop Medicare Fraud. Getting this message out statewide is our mission. Please call for assistance, additional information, or to schedule a SMP presentation in your area, 866-726-2916.
