In response to the evolving trends in digital media, MVEI has designed a proposal for the Arlanza Library, a new building typology is emerging that is redefining the traditional library and transforming the way people access information. The library responds to the community’s need to access information and technology with a dynamic program that emphasizes the use of digital media. At the core of this program is a public computer center, which provides internet and software access for the city’s residents. The program also emphasizes the importance of educational support with homework literacy centers as well as a children’s book collection. These and other support spaces surround the public computer center to reinforce the notion of information exchange made accessible to all residents. To communicate visually the importance of technology, the computer and main entrance are articulated in the building form. A high ceiling and high windows along the north façade provide indirect, glare-free lighting, giving this space a unique characteristic. Staffed service counters are easily accessible to provide technical support for visitors and movement between the different spaces occurs freely. Doors are kept to a minimum to accommodate a free exchange of information and to create a flexible space that can adapt to the evolving technological trends.
