Arlington County Medical Society mem-bers, families and friends gathered as a 5Kteam this year for the Clarendon Day Runon Saturday, September 21, as part of apilot program to communicate a health-positive message to our community andshare the "Fitness is Medicine" spirit bywalking the walk (or running it).
Huge thanks to Virginia Hospital CenterSurgical Specialists, Mark Domanksi,MD/Bluemont Plastic Surgery and LynnMontague-Daddio, VHC bariatric nursecoordinator, for supporting and helpingus get the word out. The special ordered
(and coveted) “Fitness is Medicine” athletichats were worn with pride and will continueto serve as inspiration and reminder forall to take an active role in taking care ofour bodies/health.
The pictures don’t lie—we had a big, en-thusiastic turnout of physicians, staff, pa-tients, families and friends! We hope torepeat this next year and continue to pro-mote our society and the message we canall can get behind:

Our annual golf and tennis event was sponsored againthis year by our friends at the Virginia Hospital Center, longstanding supporters of our fundraising event benefitingthe Arlington County Medical Society Foundation schol-arship fund. Much excitement is generated by theprospect of friendly competition amongst physicians,co-workers and business partners in our golf and tennistournaments—all coming together by the notion ofgiving back to medicine and healthcare by supportingthe scholarship mission.
Special thanks go to our Army Navy Country Clubsponsor (and 2018 golf trophy winner), Dr. Craig Rezac, for inviting our society to this much anticipated golfouting. This year we had what seemed to be a recordnumber turnout of golfers with 7 foursome groups (26championship-trophy-hungry players) sending in theirhandicaps in advance and showing up for the pre-gamegroup meeting and customary photo at the host countryclub. This year ACMS provided starter kits that includedevent logo golf towels and other swag items and snacksfor the golfers to enjoy. Special shout out to PhilominaGomes, Branch Manager at EagleBank/Ballston for do-nating the golf balls and marker/tee sets that went intoall golf kits!
The results for the golf tournament are as follows:Closest to Pin #1 (Red 6): Jeff DiLisi, MDClosest to Pin #2 (White 3): Gabe Herman, MDHighest score: Cisco Espinel, MDGolf Championship Cup Winners: Michael Tran, DO;Tony Martinez, CRNA; Dayo Akinbi, Pharm. D.; Jay Lee
The winning team, the Dominion Anesthesia Team, is acomposite of “expert” players recruited by Dr. DavidLee, and is keeping championship cup in their lounge atVHC for visitors to pay respects and for winners togloat. How fortunate that winning team members getmore than just “a day with the Cup!” (ACMS has yourback.) 2020 promises to be an even larger turnout andthe competition will be fierce as those who walked away
2019 ACMS Golf and Tennis Sponsored by Virginia Hospital Center
empty-handed this time asserted that they would be re-turning next year FOR THE CUP.
Competition was unusually tight this time at the ACMStennis tournament taking place at the ANCC IndoorCourt Center. In fact, so much so that we had 2 sets offirst place ties this year for both 1st place male andfemale winners (also because of incomplete sets). Tennisproduced the following results:
1st place female:Yukmila Soriano, MDAshley Nguyen, MD*
1st place male: Gary Spivack, MDRudy Pigalarga, MD*
2nd place overall: Paul Modlinger, MD3rd place overall: Ranjit Cheriyan, MD
* Apologies for our mistake announcing results/rankingson the evening of 10/26
There was a collective sigh of relief when we found outthat there would be no color restrictions on attire at thevenue (as last year we all had to wear white a la Wimbledon).Reflecting on the level of friendly competition and the in-creasing numbers participating in our event, ACMS boardmembers have agreed to improve standardization of bothgolf and tennis tournaments moving forward.
Great turnout for the cocktails and general membershipmeeting dinner with around 45 guests showing up andenjoying the social hour with silent auction and raffle toraise funds for the ACMS scholarship. We are alwaysgrateful for our volunteers Leily and Maureen (whoreturned to pay tennis at GNT). Special thanks to ourfriends at Salon Tony for providing so many in-kind do-nations to our event. Dr. Reuben Varghese, ArlingtonCounty Public Health Director, presented emergingstatistics and info regarding our evolving patient demo-graphics and how we could use this info to best treat andhelp those in our communities.
We also want to thank our other event sponsor AndrewLee and his group from Privia, who showed up with afun yet formidable foursome, and who will continue tosupport us at our upcoming annual meeting and holidayparty on Dec 11.
Thanks to our annual business partners, friends andACMS Golf and Tennis participants like you, we wereable to raise funds, awareness and meet the educationalmission of our foundation!

Arlington Free Clinic is Looking for Volunteer Providers!AFC has provided free, high-quality health care to low-income, uninsured Arlington County adults for 25 years.
All of this work is made possible by the generosity of donors and volunteers.
Benefits to Volunteering
Particularly SeekingRheumatologists • Endocrinologists • Nephrologists • Neurologists • Primary Care Providers
•Volunteer Spanish interpreters are always available, and we subscribe to a telephone language line system to ensure clear
communication with patients.
•Following a clinic session, another team of providers comes in to review labs and radiology reports. This ensures that any
tests ordered are processed in a timely manner.
•No time limits. There are no quotas on the number of patients providers must see or limits on the amount of time
providers are allowed to spend with patients.
•Malpractice insurance is covered by the state at no cost to the provider.
•The Clinic is open Monday – Friday, but medical clinics are held in the evenings and afternoons to accommodate the
working schedules of both volunteers and patients. We ask for a commitment of roughly 3 hours a month for at least 8
months.
•Volunteer scribes are available to those who prefer working with them.
•Volunteer medical providers may be eligible to receive Virginia state tax credits for volunteering.
As a plastic surgeon, I am a big fan of the Arlington Loop. This is a phenomenal weight loss, cardiovascular, bodytoning technique. Unlike liposuction which treats saddlebags, and a tummy tuck which can treat extra abdominal skin, the Arlington Loop treats intrabdominal fat!
The Arlington Loop can begin anywhere but parking isconveniently located at Roosevelt Island Park. Parking iscomplementary but there is no valet.
The most common procedure is to go south along theMount Vernon Trail. Stop by Gravelly Point to see theplanes take off from National Airport. If you drank a lot ofcoffee prior to your run, you will need the Port o’ Potties.
Continue past the airport but turn right on the Four MileRun Trail. This trail turns into the W&OD Trail. You will
cross Barcroft, Glencarlyn, and Bluemont Park. Continuetill Bon Air Park where you turn right onto the CustisTrail. Continue for another 5 miles or so and you willreturn to where you began. The procedure is complete.
The route is about 17 miles and can be run, walked, orbiked. Personally, I get about 1,700 calories reduced fromeach go around.
Recovery generally takes 2-5 days. Several treatments maybe needed to see optimal results. Side effects can includesore legs, feet, and chaffing.
Happy trails,Mark Domanski, MDhttps://www.bluemontmd.compage

The opioid crisis affects all ages, ethnicities, income levels and communities — including Arlington.
County staff are working together to respond to the crisis through the Arlington Addiction Recovery Initiative, comprised of representatives from a range of County agencies, Arlington Public Schools, and community partners that takes a multi-dimensional approach to attacking the crisis by focusing on prevention and education, opioid addiction treatment, overdose response and recovery, diversion into treatment, and supply reduction and other law enforcement strategies.
