Dear Armadale Community
What a fabulous start to the week we had with our footy colours day and special parade on Tuesday morning. Every team was represented and all the children had the chance to walk around the whole quadrangle and sing each club song. Thank you to our sports leaders, school captains and Peter Cracknell for organising such a great day. It was also terrific to see the four football players from the Melbourne Football Club visit our school and speak to the Year 3 and 4 students. NAPLAN testing starts next week for our Year 3 and 5 students Information for Parents NAPLAN 2017 tests will be held next week on Tuesday 9th to Thursday 11th May. Any student who is away on those days will be allowed to sit catch up tests on Friday 12th May and will be supervised in my office. Should a child be unwell the whole time during that week, they will not have the opportunity to sit tests beyond Friday. NAPLAN 2017 paper test timetable:
Whilst these tests offer a snapshot of where a child is currently, they are not a measure of the whole child. Should any child be feeling anxious or nervous about
these tests, please reassure them of this snapshot view and I am also happy to assist with this. NAPLAN is a valuable assessment tool for governments, schools and parents to understand and improve the literacy and numeracy outcomes of Australian students. NAPLAN provides parents of students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 with a report on their child’s performance in literacy and numeracy against the national average. Schools and teachers use NAPLAN data to improve teaching and learning programs in the classroom. Specific information regarding the program, including details about the tests, participation, special provisions and a wide range of other issues can be found on the NAPLAN website. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about NAPLAN Please look at this link should you have any questions. Year 2 Cocktail Party Malcolm and I are looking forward to this Friday night where we will be mingling with the Year 2 parents at Sagra. Thank you so much to Bec, Sam, Kamila and Alice for this kind and generous invitation and we look forward to sharing the evening with you all. Congratulations Our very own Armadale dad, Melbourne Victory striker Besart Berisha was presented with his second Hyundai A-League Golden Boot Award at the gala Dolan Warren Awards, which was held at The Star Event Centre in Sydney on Monday night. He is pictured here with his son, Amar in 1P Berisha and Brisbane Roar's Jamie Maclaren were joint winners of the Golden Boot for the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 season with 19 goals apiece. At an assembly a few weeks ago the school gave a round of applause to Amar to pass on to his Dad for being the first soccer player in Hyundai A-League history to score 100 goals.
On behalf of our whole school community we wish Bes and the entire Melbourne Victory team all the very best for their Grand Final game this weekend on Sunday evening . Have a wonderful week.

Green Team Leadership Conference
What a pleasure it was to attend the Green Team Leadership Conference last Friday at the Stonnington SEED centre. There were a number of very interesting activities throughout the day and our children acquitted themselves really well in all of these activities. We were one of 7 schools and it was a great opportunity to mix and share ideas with children from these schools. We had Green Team reps from years 2 to 6 and they represented our school incredibly well. I was amazed at the maturity and understanding that even our Year 2 students had in regards to sustainability issues. Our plan this year is to focus on energy. We are planning to try to reduce our energy usage across the school, which will not only allow us to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, it will also save the school a considerable amount of money. The children are also very keen to see the school install more solar panels as this is a great way for our school to generate our own clean and green energy. Please see page 4 of this newsletter for a report written by our three Green Team leaders, Aidin, Ryan and Cyril. They will also be making a small presentation at next week's assembly. School Photos Day Monday 15th May
Today your child will have received a special order form from SchoolPix regarding our school photos day coming up
on 15th May. Please read through carefully all the details on this form so that you can make the correct and appropriate choice for your family. The orders can either be done on the paper sheet or online. There are also options for sibling photographs. If you did not receive an order form please check with your child's class teacher or see me. Please see the SchoolPix flyer on page 5 of this newsletter. Working Bee
Don't forget our Working Bee on Saturday 13th May from 9.00am-12.00pm. Alternatively you can make a donation in lieu of attendance to our Working Bee fund of $50 per family. This money is used to purchase tools and equipment, sand for the sandpit and for expert tradespeople to do the tasks that can’t be managed at the Working Bee itself.

Green Team Leadership Conference
On the 28th of April, the Green Team went to the Stonnington Leadership Conference.
The first thing we did was sit down and listen to what we were going to do.
Then we went for a walk in the wetlands. We learned about the importance of the lake and wetland system, also we listened to the sound of the birds and looked at some frogs.
Then we looked how much litter was in the park. There were about 40 pieces we found.
Next we looked at climate change and how coral reefs are dying. We learned that coral tries to protect the reef, but it can’t if the ocean gets too much carbon dioxide.
Next we looked at ideas of how we are going to be sustainable at our school. This year our goal is to reduce climate change by using less electricity and putting solar panels up.
Then we listened to Mia talk about how she had to push her way for her belief in her high school where no one cared about the environment.
Then we made a model about what our project is going to look like.
Overall it was a great day and was a lot of fun! Aidin, Ryan and Cyril

Dear students, parents and the
Armadale Primary School
community,
Some of the Grade 6 students
have recently become Junior
Ambassadors for a program
called CineSeeds.
CineSeeds, a program run
through the Human Rights Arts &
Film Festival, teaches people
about human rights. We have
been learning about human
rights as part of our inquiry unit
at school and how one person
can make a difference within
their community.
This year, on Sunday the 7th of
May, CineSeeds will be showing a
movie called Satellite Boy. This
will be held at ACMI Cinemas at
Fed Square. Satellite Boy is an
Australian movie aimed at
primary
school aged
children that
shines a
spotlight on
indigenous
rights and
storytelling.
If you are interested in coming
along to the festival, tickets can
be purchased from Lily in 5/6T,
or online. There are hand-outs
with information at the office
and posters have also been
placed around the school.
More information can also be found at http://2017.hraff.org.au/ We hope to see you there!

First Rehearsal: Tuesday 16th May
Where: The Arts studio
When: 8.10 – 8.45am
If you have any questions please come and see me.
What have the grade 1 - 4’s been discussing this week in their visual art lesson?
What else but Vincent Van Gogh! With a short exhibit time - less than 60 days - in Melbourne please try and visit the NGV with your child so that they don’t miss seeing a great number of Van Gogh’s paintings exhibited together. The works are displayed chronologically, according to the different seasons. This is the first time Van Gogh’s work has been exhibited this way - which adds another dimension to appreciating his oeuvre. http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/van-gogh-and-the-seasons/
If you can’t get there in person please take a look at this amazing virtual tour of the exhibition space from the perspective of the exhibition designer Ingrid Rhule, who gives an insight into the design and use of
colour chosen for the exhibition space - thank you to the parent who forwarded this link to me! http://thedesignfiles.net/2017/05/inside-look-van-gogh-and-the-seasons/
Art Angels: Could any parents please pop in and sharpen some pencils if you have time.
Donations: Yes….more BOTTLE TOPS please!
And newspapers too!

Captains’ Corner
Welcome back to term 2. This term is going to be jam packed. We hope everyone’s holidays went well and you didn’t eat too many chocolates. On Thursday 20th April all the year 5 and 6’s went to Parliament in Melbourne. We had a tour around the place and did some role playing in the Legislative Assembly (lower house). All the children got to feel like they were in one of the sessions. Afterwards all the classes went to the museum and then went to a park to have lunch. All in all it was a fantastic day.
On Friday 21st April the 3’s,4’s,5’s and 6’s had an incursion with a man called Martin who taught us about being grateful and resilient. He told us some remarkable stories about children who aren’t as fortunate as us but still have a huge smile on their face. We are very sorry if your children are saying DIS and pointing to things. This is their way of showing that they are grateful. On Tuesday 25th April we commemorated
the ANZACS. Some things that we did to remember them were: the dawn service, movies about how it was to be an ANZAC, the ANZAC football game between Essendon and Collingwood and making ANZAC biscuits. Remember to always Be safe, Be kind and Be your best. From your school captains Lucia and Jack
This week lots of things have been happening. First of all we had our cross country trials at Orrong Romanis Reserve which was really tiring. The eight, nine and ten year olds ran two laps around both ovals and the eleven, twelve and thirteen year olds ran three laps around both ovals. Congratulations to everyone who got in! Another thing that has really excited the Year 6s is our Year 6 bomber jackets. We got them on Tuesday and haven’t taken them off since. We are really excited to sew our leadership badges on. They are even personalised with our last names on the back of our jumpers. Years 3 and 5 will have their N.A.P.L.A.N. tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and they are really excited for their results.
