1 Armed Violence Reduction (AVR) Intern (full-time) Regional Office, Nairobi BACKGROUND Danish Demining Group (DDG) is part of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC). DRC has operated in Kenya since 2005, and DDG’s programme in Kenya started in July 2012. DDG has armed violence reduction programmes in many other countries in the region including Somaliland, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan and Uganda. PURPOSE Support the Kenya programme and the Regional Director in terms of ongoing research focussed projects and other assignments as necessary. Initially focus will be on supporting a project to map armed violence in eastern Africa. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Support DDG Kenya staff collecting and verifying data for armed violence mapping project. Carry out desk research on causes and drivers of armed violence in eastern Africa. Monitor developments around extractive industries in Kenya and Somalia. Any other tasks as agreed with DDG Kenya CD or DDG’s Regional Director REPORTING ARRANGEMENTS Line manager: DDG Country Director, Kenya Key relationships: Regional Director, AVR Project Assistant, other DDG Kenya staff CONTRACT DURATION: 6 Months; starting: 15 May 2014 GENERAL Commitments: DRC has a Humanitarian Accountability Framework, outlining its global accountability commitments. All staff are required to contribute to the achievement of this framework into the work of DRC (http://www.drc.dk/HAF.4265.0.html) QUALIFICATIONS Essential: A university degree in a field relevant to Armed Violence Reduction, Substantial knowledge of the Kenya political system from community to national level and a good understanding of regional dynamics Excellent research skills Fluency in English. Strong command of written English and ability communicate clearly to various audiences, High degree of computer literacy, Advanced user of social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Google+) Preferable: Ability to develop and manage databases Ability to develop websites Experience of using Ushahidi and FrontlineSMS platforms or similar Application and CV Interested candidates who meet the required qualifications are invited to submit updated CV and cover letter explaining their motivation and why they are suited for the post.
