Rheinmetall to Supply Sensor Equipmentfor Bundeswehr Vehicles

Germany’s Bundeswehr has assigned Rheinmetallan important role in modernizing many of itsvehicles with new electro-optical sensor technology.

The Düsseldorf-based Group has received afollow-up order to supply some 700 high-performancesensors for an identical number of weapon stationsdestined for a variety of vehicles. In total, the order isworth around €55 million. Over the next four years,Rheinmetall will be equipping the Bundeswehr with 418LAZ 200 and 275 LAZ 400L sensors.

Rheinmetall will thus be supplying particularlyhigh-value components under a Bundeswehrprocurement programme that will significantly enhancethe self-defence capabilities of numerous differentvehicles. It will also assure a substantially improvednight fighting capability.

The sensor units form the central element of theelectronic fire control unit in the weapon station,enabling highly effective target recognition, tracking andengagement. In combination with remotely operatedweapon stations, they let vehicle crews respond to threatswithout having to leave the safety of the armouredfighting compartment, potentially exposing themselves tohostile fire. Older weapon systems can only be operatedwith the hatch open in unprotected mode.

Mounted on vehicles such as the Fox, Boxer, Yak andDingo, LAZ equipment sets (LAZ stands for“Lafetten-adaptierbares Zielsystem”, or “gunmount-adaptable aiming system”) have already provenhighly effective in deployed operations of theBundeswehr.

The compact LAZ 200/400L systems comprise asensor unit consisting of a thermal imaging device, ahigh-resolution CCD camera and – in the case of the400L – a laser rangefinder. Unlike the LAZ200, the LAZ400L model features a cooled thermal imaging devicewith an even better night vision capability. The packagealso includes operator interface and display devices,which form an integral part of the overall weapon stationsystem.

This new order attests the excellence of the devicesproduced at Rheinmetall’s Ismaning plant, while alsoassuring adequate capacity utilization and the plant’scontinued economic viability for years to come.

Rheinmetall to supply Bundeswehr with7 Fuchs/Fox armoured vehicles forclearing IEDs

The German Bundeswehr has contracted withRheinmetall to supply it with seven Fuchs/Foxarmoured vehicles specially configured for detectingand identifying roadside bombs, mines, etc. Thisnew Fuchs/Fox variant is called the KAI, short forits official Germany designation,“Kampfmittelaufklärung und–identifizierung”. The order is worth around €37million.

The vehicles reinforce the Bundeswehr’s “RouteClearance System” for reconnoitring and neutralizingimprovised explosive devices, or IEDs, from the safetyof an armoured fighting compartment. A total of sevenvehicles are to be delivered between November 2013 andNovember 2014.

In current and future peace enforcement andpeacekeeping missions, IEDs will continue to pose amajor threat to troops deployed in harm’s way. Today,the Bundeswehr still relies on troops equipped withmanual devices for keeping routes of march and lines ofadvance free from roadside bombs, etc. As a result,current EOD detection and clearing procedures are notonly labour- and time-intensive but potentiallydangerous.

Besides excellent crew protection, the Fuchs/Fox KAIfeatures a multiple-joint, high-precision manipulator armwith a 10-metre reach and heavy lifting capacity. Themanipulator arm makes it possible for EOD personnel toexamine and identify unexploded ordnance and IEDswith extreme precision from a safe standoff withoutleaving the safety of the fighting compartment.Moreover, a special rescue platform can be used forevacuating personnel and equipment from the dangerzone.

The Fuchs/Fox vehicle used for the KAI platform isthe latest version of this tried and tested 6x6 wheeledvehicle, which occupies a prominent place in theBundeswehr inventory. First fielded some thirty yearsago, Rheinmetall has steadily upgraded the protectionlevel and operational capabilities of this robust, reliablethree-axle vehicle, adding modular protection features, areinforced chassis and fragment-reducing spall liner inthe interior of the fighting compartment.

In addition, the Fuchs/Fox 1A8 is equipped withhighly effective anti-landmine and IED protectionelements, special suspended seating that keeps the crew’s

feet off the floor of the hull, textile rifle holders and netsfor securing all wall-mounted equipment. As an option,the vehicles can also be outfitted with the Group’s ActiveDefence System (ADS), which neutralizes incomingprojectiles just before impact.

The Bundeswehr plans to deploy the Fuchs/Fox KAIin Afghanistan starting in the 4th quarter of 2014: even ina drawdown scenario there are numerous vehiclemovements, and countering the threat from booby trapsand roadside bombs will be as important as ever.

A high-tech system of systemsThe Fuchs/Fox KAI adds a new dimension to the

Bundeswehr’s heavy mine-clearing capability, and isintended to reconnoitre danger zones that the RouteClearance System cannot reach. In addition, KAI willalso be able to serve as a standalone EOD detectionsystem for reconnoitring hotspots during convoy escortoperations.

The Route Clearance System (RCP) consists of fourvehicles: one for reconnaissance; one for clearing IEDs,mines, etc.; a control vehicle; and another used fortransport.

Rheinmetall’s remote control Wiesel detectionvehicle, equipped with a newly developed dual sensorwith integrated ground penetration radar and a metaldetector, has the task in the GRCP of detectinglandmines and IEDs on roads. The Fuchs/Fox 1A8armoured transport vehicle serves as a mobile, highlyprotected control centre, equipped with operatorinterfaces as well as systems for evaluating the signalsfrom the dual sensor.

Forming part of a separate order, the “MiniMineWolf” manipulator vehicle is used for the disposalof dangerous unexploded ordnance by remote control.

Depending on the specific mission, this approx.10-tonne manipulator vehicle can be equipped with toolssuch as a robotic arm, tiller system or bulldozer blade.An integrated video system instantly transmits imageryback to the EOD specialists in the Fuchs/Fox operatorvehicle, keeping them in the picture at all times.

Finally, a Multi FSA logistics vehicle made byRheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) has thetask of transporting the vehicles of the Route ClearanceSystem.

Two armored vehicle manufacturers, Renault Trucks

Defense and Streit, have selected the deFNder®Remote Weapon Station designed, developed andmanufactured by Belgian small arms manufacturerFN Herstal to equip their vehicles at theinternational IDEX 2013 trade show to be held inAbu Dhabi from 17 to 21 February 2013.

Renault Trucks Defense will display the deFNder®Light equipped with a 7.62x51mm cal FN MAG®machine gun on its Sherpa SW vehicle whilst Streit willshow the deFNder® Medium featuring the .50 cal FNM3R™ machine gun on its Scorpion 4x4 vehicle.

The deFNder® Remote Weapon Stations, available inLight or Medium version, were designed and developedaround a same philosophy. They feature unique elevationand depression angles, which is particularly critical inurban and irregular warfare. They both offer an openarchitecture, accepting any types of sight modules and awide choice of FN weapons – from 5.56 to 7.62 calmachine gun for the Light model and from 5.56 to .50 calmachine gun, plus 40mm AGL, for the Medium model.The deFNder® Medium Remote Weapon Station canintegrate the exclusive .50 cal FN M3R™ machine gun,with outstanding high firing rate (1,100 RPM).

The deFNder® Remote Weapon Stations can easily beintegrated onto any new or existing vehicles or staticplatforms, and are available with various options, e.g.add-on modular ballistic protection, gyroscopicstabilization, sniper shot detectors, tracking systems,smoke grenade launchers, to name just a few.

In addition, FN Herstal is taking part in the Battlenetconcept developed by Renault Trucks Defense. This newconcept allows quick interconnection of various devicesusing the same communication protocol. This, combinedwith the specific features of the deFNder®, makes thevehicles very easy to upgrade throughout their life cycle.

Both the deFNder® Light and Medium will be ondisplay also on FN Herstal booth at IDEX 2013 (BelgianPavilion, hall 12, booth no. C20).

Representatives of the Iraqi Ministry ofDefence Have Accepted Another Batch ofBTR-4 Armoured Personnel Carriers

On 7 February, in Kiev, the representatives of theMinistry of Defence of the Republic of Iraq andthose of the State Company “Ukrspecexport” signedthe document that confirms the acceptance of

another batch of Ukrainian-made BTR-4 armouredpersonnel carriers. The batch consists of 40vehicles.

“The tests have been conducted successfully. Noserious problems have been revealed. We are contentwith the process of cooperation with the Ukrainian side.In Iraq, the Ukrainian-made BTR-4s, which have beensupplied earlier, are operated under difficult fieldconditions. This is a new and advanced vehicle for theIraqi Army”, said the official representative of the Iraqidelegation.

The $457.5 million contract for supply of 420 BTR-4vehicles was signed late in 2009 by representatives ofUkraine and Republic of Iraq. The main contractor is theState Enterprise “Kharkiv Morozov Machine BuildingDesign Bureau”, the sub-contractors are State Enterprise“Malyshev Plant” and other enterprises of the StateConcern “Ukroboronprom”. The contract envisages thesupply of not only BTR-4 armoured personnel carriers,but also special vehicles based on the BTR-4 chassis,technical maintenance and repair vehicles, and trainingsimulators, with required technical support being alsoprovided.

The Ukrainian side is content with the results of theinspection. “Despite the considerably more strictrequirements for acceptance put forward by the Iraqi side(each vehicle was checked in accordance with a specialprocedure), all the vehicles were accepted without anysubstantial observations. We will fulfil the contract incompliance with the agreements that have beenconcluded. Now the main task consists in establishing anefficient maintenance system to service the vehicles thathave been delivered to the Iraqi side”, said arepresentative of the State Concern “Ukroboronprom”.

Thales Canada awarded Optronicscontract for Upgraded LAV III vehicles

Thales’ Canadian-developed thermal imaging andvision enhancement solutions have been preferredsolutions of the Canadian Army since the mid 90's. Theequipment is also used by NATO and allied forces toimprove their operational capabilities at night or inadverse weather and obscured battlefield conditions. Ourexports are provided as individual products to foreigndefence forces, or through our business line partners as

local situational awareness systems or sub systems totheir own system offerings.

Today’s announcement follows Department ofDefence contracts to Thales in 2007 and 2010 for thesupply of over 1100 units of Driver Vision Enhancementequipment, and equipping 550 vehicles with Crew VisionEnhancement equipment. The contract with GeneralDynamics Land Systems - Canada further emphasizesThales’ leading supplier position in this importantsegment.

Artillery Tractor

Artillery tractor is a kind of tractor, also referred toas a gun tractor, a vehicle used to tow artillerypieces of varying weights.

In modern warfare towed artillery has given way inpart to self-propelled artillery, it is also common to findauxiliary power units built into the gun carriage toprovide limited battlefield mobility. Traditional towedartillery can still be found in units where complexity andweight are liabilities: e.g. air-mobile, amphibious andother light units. In such units, where organic transport isusually limited, any available transport can double asartillery tractors in order to reposition guns when needed.For example engineer vehicles of a different primarypurpose such as the U.S. Marines' Light Capacity RoughTerrain Forklift, a versatile telehandler forklift capable oftowing gear from either end.

Government of Canada Invests inCanadian Jobs and the Canadian ArmedForces’ Fleet of Light Armoured VehiclesIII (Ottawa)

Canadian Armed Forces’ fleet of Light ArmouredVehicles will not only keep Canada’s men andwomen in uniform safe; they’re creating jobs righthere in Ottawa.

“For our government, the economy is Job One,” saidBaird. “We are also taking unprecedented action to keepour troops safe when we send them overseas to do thetough work we ask of them.”

He added:" “This announcement delivers on bothfronts and is a win for all involved.”"

EODC Inc. of Ottawa, Ontario, has been awarded this$3.75 million subcontract by General Dynamics LandSystems – Canada in support of the Light ArmouredVehicle III Upgrade Project. This sub-contract issustaining 60 positions at EODC’s Ottawa facility.

Baird made the announcement on behalf of theHonourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister ofNational Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic CanadaOpportunities Agency) (La Francophonie) and wasjoined by Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament forOttawa-Orleans.

“Our investments in renewing the Canadian ArmedForces’ capabilities on land, sea and air are building afirst-class, modern military that is ready to take on thechallenges of the 21st Century – while supportingCanadian workers across the country,” said MinisterValcourt.

Oshkosh Defense Unveils L-ATV variantcombines unprecedented off-roadmobility and crew protection with thecapacity to transport troops, sheltersand other cargo

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- Oshkosh Defense, a division ofOshkosh Corporation, has unveiled its Light CombatTactical All-Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV) utility variantfor the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program.The L-ATV utility variant fulfills the JLTVrequirement for a two-seat cargo vehicle, while theL-ATV base variant meets the requirement for a4-seat multipurpose vehicle. Both Oshkosh L-ATVvariants leverage a common crew protectionsystem, advanced automotive systems, and thepatented Oshkosh TAK-4i™ intelligent independentsuspension system to deliver unprecedented levelsof protection and off-road performance in a lightvehicle.

The Oshkosh L-ATV utility variant is designed toprovide mobility for loads such as containers, pallets andbreak bulk cargo in a wide range of operatingenvironments and threat levels. In addition to haulingcargo, the L-ATV utility variant can be outfitted as ashelter carrier to carry standard shelters forcommunications systems, on-board electronics and otherfunctions. The vehicle can transport two passengers andhas a payload capacity of more than 5,100 pounds. Thevehicle’s performance was demonstrated at the 2013NATC Technology Rodeo, which took place Feb. 6 atthe Nevada Automotive Test Center (NATC) nearCarson City, Nev.

“The landscapes and threats of tomorrow’s battlefieldsare unpredictable, and state-of-the-art equipment will beabsolutely necessary to protecting lives and completingmissions,” said John Bryant, vice president and generalmanager of Joint and Marine Corps Programs forOshkosh Defense. “The Oshkosh L-ATV utility variantis the most technologically advanced, most mature JLTVsolution for Warfighters to complete transport missionson those battlefields.”

Oshkosh engineered the L-ATV with a high level ofcommonality to streamline fleet sustainment, yet eachvariant is tailored to optimize performance for its uniquerole.

Oshkosh successfully completed its JLTV designunderstanding review with the government and is onschedule to deliver 22 JLTV prototypes this summerunder the Engineering, Manufacturing and Development

(EMD) contract. The company began production of itsJLTV offering shortly after receiving the contract and isusing LEAN processes, a rigorous quality-assurancesystem and an efficient supply chain to deliverhigh-quality and affordable L-ATVs that meet or exceedJLTV requirements.

Oshkosh has extensive experience delivering a highlevel of operational discipline and quality control acrossa platform with multiple variants. The company has metits delivery schedules and set new standards of qualityfor the U.S. Army’s Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles(FMTV), which consists of 17 variants and 23configurations, while delivering significant cost savingsto the Department of Defense over the life of thecontract. Oshkosh also has delivered more than 8,700MRAP All-Terrain Vehicles (M-ATV) on-time andon-budget. The M-ATV is the only vehicle performingthe JLTV’s mission profile in-theater and has a fieldreadiness rate of 95 percent.

Oshkosh is displaying the L-ATV base vehicle atMarine West, Feb. 13-14 at Marine Corps Base, CampPendleton, Calif.

Unmanned Ground Vehicle Technologyfrom Oshkosh Defense to Make MENADebut at IDEX

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- Oshkosh Defense, a division ofOshkosh Corporation, announced today theinternational debut of its Oshkosh TerraMax™unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) technology, whichis available to support militaries globally and will bedemonstrated at IDEX (International DefenseExhibition and Conference) 2013 (booth #03-C10),on Feb. 17-21 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The TerraMax UGV technology provides a solution totwo primary needs of today’s military customersworldwide. It helps reduce the threat to Warfighters fromimprovised explosive devices (IEDs) on today’sbattlefields by increasing a driver’s situational awarenessor removing a driver from the vehicle entirely. It alsoserves as a force multiplier by allowing one operator tosupervise three to five UGVs from a safe distance. Allthis at a time when militaries are facing force reductions.

“Crew protection is a crucial priority for militaries asthey modernize their vehicle fleets,” said SergeBuchakjian, senior vice president and general manager ofInternational Programs for Oshkosh Defense. “Our

Designed as a scalable kit that can be used on anyfielded tactical wheeled vehicle, the Oshkosh TerraMaxUGV technology enables vehicles to complete plannedmissions in full autonomous mode or by “shadowing” aleader vehicle. Oshkosh will demonstrate at IDEX theTerraMax UGV technology’s Operator Control Unit(OCU), a user-friendly control interface that provides theusability and functionality capabilities that troops needfor operations in the field.

The TerraMax UGV technology is highlysophisticated but was developed with the user in mindand for ease of control. Troops can be trained to operatevehicles remotely or in full autonomous mode in only afew days. Vehicles equipped with the TerraMax UGVtechnology retain their original payload and performancecapabilities and can operate for extended periods of time– day or night, through dust and adverse weather –without enduring the fatigue that can afflict humanoperators.

CMI Defence and Doosan DST Present aNew 120/105mm Medium Tank Concept

Demand for Medium Tanks is increasing. At IDEX2013 CMI Defence and Doosan DST present a new120/105mm Medium Tank concept. The systemintegrates the Cockerill XC-8 turret and the DoosanK21 IFV chassis. With a system weight of some 25tonnes, the concept offers advanced 120mm or105mm firepower with high operational flexibilityand tactical mobility. The Cockerill XC-8 is alow-weight concept-turret that recognises divergentmarket requirements; specifically for the broadoperational flexibility demanded by themedium-tank requirement, and for the narrower,more specialised anti- armour requirement. Thusone of two low-recoil force guns may be fitted inthe XC-8.

The Cockerill 105mm high pressure gun providescommanders with a wide choice of ammunition to suitthe tactical situation; it fires all NATO-standard 105mmtypes and the Cockerill Falarick 105 Gun Launched AntiTank Guided Missile (GLATGM). Elevating to +42° thisweapon delivers exceptional engagement capability incomplex terrain, an indirect-fire HE capability to 10kmrange, and the GLATGM permits heavy armour to beenagaged at extended ranges.

The Cockerill 120mm high pressure gun provides astrengthened anti-armour capability. This weapon firesall NATO-standard 120mm smoothbore ammunition andthe Cockerill Falarick 120 GLATGM, which permits theeffective engagement and penetration of heavy armour tobeyond 5km range.

Both guns are employed using a common highperformance, digital, fully-stabilised, day/night weaponcontrol system. Turret weight is kept low through the useof a bustle- mounted autoloader, which permits atwo-person crew. The Cockerill XC-8 concept-turretdraws on the proven modular technology of the CockerillCT-CV 105HP turret and may be realised at low risk.

The Doosan K21 IFV chassis represents thelatest-generation of vehicle technology. In service withthe Republic of Korea, the K21 offers outstandingtactical mobility through the use of hydro-pneumaticsuspension, a 750HP powerpack and advanced

running-gear design. Tactical mobility and flexibility isfurther enhanced by the vehicle’s ability to swim withoutassistance at full combat weight. A high- capacity digitaldata-infrastructure permits the functional integration ofthe Driver with the turret crew by using shared imageryand control. The same architecture permitsstraightforward through-life upgrade and lowobsolesence risk.

The combination of the Cockerill XC-8 concept-turretwith the Doosan K21 chassis promises a significantadvance in terms of medium-weight direct-firecapability. The combination of highly effective andflexible lethality options with outstanding strategic andtactical mobility, opens up a new range of operationalpossibilities.

BAE Launches Its Latest Manned Turret

BAE Systems Land Systems South Africa revealedits latest manned turret to attendees at theInternational Defence Exhibition (IDEX) andConference in the United Arab Emirates today.

The Overhead Manned Turret (OMT) is a newgeneration, low profile turret designed for vehicles suchas Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV) or Mine ProtectedVehicles (MPV). The OMT is operated by one crewmember and provides self-protection, ground fire supportand attack capabilities to the vehicle system with anoptimal balance between situational awareness, crewprotection and cost.

The system has been modularly designed to supportdifferent user requirements. Parameters such asprotection level, weapon interface, sighting system andposition control mechanism can be configured to suitspecific applications. The OMT can be configured toaccommodate a range of weapons from 7.62mm and12.7mm machine guns, to 40mm grenade launchers.Fitted with the appropriate weapon configuration, theOMT can be effectively utilised against enemy targets.

The basic designated system is equipped with manualturret drives and an optical episcope with integratedaiming mark. All round vision of the battlefield enablesoutstanding target detection capability, fast reaction timeand orientation in urban conditions. Four smoke grenadelaunchers are fitted as standard.

enabling the operator to engage a target quickly andeffortlessly.

When configured with a B7 level ballistic protection,the total mass is 550 kg excluding ammunition. Themaximum height of 590mm above vehicle deck offers alow-profile solution with good situational awareness andhigh performance target identification of more than akilometre, day or night.

Elevation and traverse hand wheels provide thestandard human interface for turret movement. TheOMT-ED version makes use of a dead-man switch andmovement controller for rapid movement in traverse. Anintegrated brake system ensures operation while thevehicle is parked against a slope of 15 degrees. Thisadded functionality, in combination with the highperformance video sight, offers an affordable turretsolution for light vehicles.

Navistar Defense Awarded $23 MillionOrder To Provide Armored Cabs To TheAfghan National Security Forces

LISLE, Ill. -- Navistar Defense, LLC, already a keysupplier to the Afghan National Army (ANA) andAfghan National Police (ANP), has received anurgent delivery order from the U.S. Army (TACOMLCMC) to retrofit 205 armored cabs onto NavistarMedium Tactical Vehicles (MTV) currentlydesignated for service with the Afghan NationalSecurity Forces.

The award, for $23 million, will involve replacing thecurrent commercial cab with a specially designedarmored cab— providing savings by re-using the originalcomponents of the MTV to protect the ANA and ANPfrom ballistic and blast threats in the theater ofoperations. The order also includes enhancing additionalvehicle elements for improved survivability to provideAfghan National Security Forces with the capability toconduct route clearance missions with mine rollerapplications.

"This order reflects Navistar's strong partnership withthe U.S. Department of Defense in providing high qualityvehicles on very aggressive schedules in support ofprotecting the soldier on the ground," said ArchieMassicotte, president, Navistar Defense. "We are proudto continue to support the vehicle fleet that we haveprovided to the Afghan National Security Forces anddeliver on our commitments to the U.S. military andallies on this very important project and program."

The Navistar MTV is an extremely flexible platformthat is already in service in Afghanistan in a variety ofkey missions including general troop transport, watertankers, fuel trucks, recovery vehicles and cargo trucks.

Since 2004, Navistar has provided nearly 9,000 MTVs tothe ANA and ANP. There are another 14,000 NavistarMTVs in service with military units around the world.

The vehicles will be upgraded at the Navistar Defensefacility in West Point, Miss. Deliveries are scheduled tobegin in April with completion scheduled for July.

Armoured Vehicle-Launched Bridge

An armoured vehicle-launched bridge (AVLB) is acombat support vehicle, sometimes regarded as asubtype of combat engineering vehicle, designed toassist militaries in rapidly deploying tanks and otherarmoured fighting vehicles across rivers.

The AVLB is usually a tracked vehicle converted from

a tank chassis to carry a folding metal bridge instead ofweapons. The AVLB's job is to allow armoured orinfantry units to cross water, when a river too deep forvehicles to wade through is reached, and no bridge isconveniently located (or sufficiently sturdy, a substantialconcern when moving 60-ton tanks).

The bridge layer unfolds and launches its cargo,providing a ready-made bridge across the obstacle inonly minutes. Once the span has been put in place, theAVLB vehicle detaches from the bridge, and movesaside to allow traffic to pass. Once all of the vehicleshave crossed, it crosses the bridge itself and reattaches tothe bridge on the other side. It then retracts the spanready to move off again. A similar procedure can beemployed to allow crossings of small chasms or similarobstructions. AVLBs can carry bridges of 60 feet (19metres) or greater in length. By using a tank chassis, thebridge layer is able to cover the same terrain as mainbattle tanks, and the provision of armour allows them tooperate even in the face of enemy fire. However, this isnot a universal attribute: some exceptionally sturdy 6x6or 8x8 truck chassis have lent themselves to bridge-layerapplications.

LM Demos DAGR Missile Ground VehicleLaunch Capability from JLTV

Lockheed Martin recently demonstrated the abilityof its DAGR missile to launch from a ground vehicleduring a series of flight tests at Eglin Air ForceBase, Fla.

DAGR and two Hydra 70 rockets were launched froma pedestal launcher mounted in the bed of a LockheedMartin prototype Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV).DAGR locked onto the laser spot two seconds afterlaunch, flew 5 km down range and impacted the targetwithin 1 meter of the laser spot. The unguided Hydra 70rockets were launched down the center of the range, andflew 521 and 2,600 meters, respectively.

“DAGR delivers a high-precision defensive capabilityto the surface combat arena when paired with thepedestal launcher and a mobile ground platform like theJLTV,” said Ken Musculus, director of close combat

systems at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.Lockheed Martin’s pedestal launcher features four

M299 launcher rails, associated cables and electronics,providing full compatibility with HELLFIRE® II andDAGR missiles. DAGR’s rail-mounted canister attachesto the pedestal launch rails as it would on a standardHELLFIRE launcher designed for aircraft.

DAGR incorporates proven HELLFIRE II technologyinto a 2.75-inch/70 millimeter guidance kit that integratesseamlessly with legacy Hydra-70 rockets. The result is alaser-guided missile that puts a 10-pound warhead withinone meter of the laser spot, defeating high-value,non-armored or lightly-armored targets while minimizingcollateral damage. DAGR’s lock-on-before launch modeensures the missile identifies the correct target prior tolaunch.

Lockheed Martin has conducted 40 DAGR flight testsfrom ranges of 1 to 5.1 kilometers. DAGR has beenlaunched from multiple HELLFIRE-equippedrotary-wing platforms, including the AH-64D Apache,AH-6 Little Bird and OH-58 Kiowa Warrior. It has beenlaunched from the pedestal launcher in three guidedflight tests and five flights in total.

Sloped Armour

Sloped armour is armour that is mounted at anon-vertical and non-horizontal angle, typically onbattle tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles.

For a given normal to the surface of the armour, itsplate thickness, increasing armour slope improves thearmour's level of protection by increasing the thicknessmeasured on a horizontal plane, while for a given areadensity of the armour the protection can be eitherincreased or reduced by other sloping effects, dependingon the armour materials used and the qualities of theprojectile that hits it. The increased protection caused byincreasing the slope while keeping the plate thicknessconstant, is due to a proportional increase of area densityand thus mass, and thus offers no weight benefit.

Therefore the other possible effects of sloping, such asdeflection, deforming and ricochet of a projectile, havebeen the reasons to apply sloped armour in armouredvehicles design. Another motive is the fact that slopingarmour is a more efficient way of covering the necessaryequipment since it encloses less volume with lessmaterial. The sharpest angles are usually seen on thefrontal glacis plate, both as it is the hull side most likelyto be hit and because there is more room to slope in thelongitudinal direction of a vehicle.

Sloped armour was first widely used in theSoviet-designed T-34 battle tank and is also widely usedin modern main battle tanks. A good example of that isthe turret of the Israeli Merkava main battle tank.

GDELS signs a teaming agreement withFalck Schmidt Defence Systems forDanish APC-R Program

General Dynamics European Land Systems andFalck Schmidt Defence Systems have signed acomprehensive teaming agreement to respond tothe requests for the Danish Armored PersonnelCarriers Replacement (APC-R) Program.

Under the teaming agreement, General DynamicsEuropean Land Systems (GDELS) and Falck SchmidtDefence Systems (FSDS), a leading Defence contractorin Denmark, are working together to provide the bestarmored personnel carrier for the Danish Army.

The Danish Defence Acquisition and LogisticOrganization (DALO) invited General DynamicsEuropean Land Systems to submit tenders for bothwheeled and tracked options of the program. GDELS hasbeen the only contender chosen for both options with theASCOD and PIRANHA 5.

This level of protection is the next after B7 (standardsEN 1063 / EN 1522) and according to the company'sinformation the vehicle became the most protected civilvehicle in the world - perhaps excluding the vehicle ofthe US president, the protection level of which is notdisclosed.

Till now there were only three companies in the worldwhich have know-how to design highly protected civilvehicles, yet the level of protection was lower - up to B7,i.e. VPAM 9. Thanks to using state of the art materials

The vehicle withstands attacks by bullets B32 (7.62 x54R sniper rifle Dragunov) with velocity up to 874 m/sas required by VPAM 10 and Stanag 3, thus providingprotection against all widespread soft core and armorpiercing bullets 5.56 / 5.45 and 7.62 mm - excluding onlytungsten-carbide bullets, that are not easy to source andare quite expensive.

The anti-mine protection guarantees no injuries to theoccupants after blasts up to 6 kg TNT under the wheel(anti-tank mine) as required by Stanag 4569, level 2a.Apart from that, no injuries would occur after a blast ofIED up to 15 kg at the distance of 2 m from the vehicle,anti-personnel mine DM31 under the floor and up to 3hand grenades under the floor or on the roof of thevehicle.

The armoring scheme was developed in the company'sdesign bureau in Germany.

The vehicle was tested and certified in a militarycertification center in Germany; contrary to the civilcertification centers (Beschussamt), this certificationcenter register all data necessary to evaluate if anyinjuries would occur to the occupants. A dummy withsensors is set into the vehicle and some high-speedcameras are installed, recording what happened insidethe vehicle at each millisecond after the blast.

The assembly of the vehicles is done in themanufacturing facility of the company in Jordan, as wellas at the partner company Armor Group in Russia.

Bumar as the leader of the consortiumbuilding a new Polish tank

On 14th February in Warsaw, Bumar Sp. z o.o.,together with other companies of the Polish defenseindustry set up a new main battle tank constructionconsortium. The goal of the consortium, accordingto the records, is performing research anddevelopment works and the implementation of“Universal Modular Tracked Platform in a DirectSupport Vehicle/New Main Battle Tank version” tothe production stage.

Bumar became the leader of the consortium and willcoordinate and supervise the course of research anddevelopment works, and afterwards the company will beresponsible for the implementation to the production andproviding the Polish Armed Forces with the new Polishtank.

Apart from Bumar, the following companies of theBumar Group entered the consortium: OśrodekBadawczo–Rozwojowy UrządzeńMechanicznych OBRUM Sp. z o.o. (Eng. Research andDevelopment Center for Mechanical Appliances),“Bumar Łabędy” S.A. Mechanical Plants,Bumar Żołnierz S.A. (Eng. Bumar Soldier,Bumar Elektronika S.A. (Eng. The consortium was established in response to theinterest of the Ministry of National Defense, concerningthe project of a Universal Modular TrackedPlatform/New Main Battle Tank. For several years, theBumar Group has been conducting analytical, conceptualand research and development works to provide thePolish Armed Forces with a modern Universal ModularTracked Platform as a Fire Support Vehicle, as theMinistry of National Defense required. The consortiumwill allow the exploitation of intellectual and productionpotential of constructing tracked combat vehicles,including combat and special platforms, which individualmembers of this contract have.

The detailed division of tasks between the members ofthe consortium is based on the initial plans, prepared bythe leader.

“This contract means that the Polish industry will joinforces, because we all want to provide the Polish ArmedForces with the best vehicle, and to make possible forPolish soldiers to drive a Polish tank,” says MariuszAndrzejczak, Vice President of the Management Boardresponsible for Technology and Development.
