The Pastor's Page

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Advent is a beautifully rich season. It is a time of waiting to celebrate the birth of Jesusand to prepare for his coming again. The question is this: how do we wait? During theseason of Advent we are called to be vigilant, to pay attention to the signs of the times.dvent is a penitential season when we acknowledge the sinfulness of our lives and seekthe mercy of God. We are “advent people” waiting for the Lord to come in glory on the last day. Butagain…how do we wait? These four weeks of Advent remind us not only of themarvelous story of Jesus’ birth, but also of the reality of his coming again in glory. Weare given these weeks of Advent at the beginning of the liturgical year as a time todevelop spiritual habits of vigilance. You see, we not only wait for the coming of theLord on the last day, but also for an awareness of his presence in our lives today. If wedon’t see him now; if we take his presence for granted in this moment, how will werecognize him on the last day? My prayer for all of us is that this Advent season will be a time of patience, preparationand watchfulness. Help us to be ready for whatever you would have us do. Keep us safeas we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.” In joyful hope, Pastor Jean

Every year the ELCA provides a number of young adults the opportunity to grow in their faithand work hand-in-hand with our global neighbors through our Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM)program. Volunteers, who range in age from 21 to 29, take the plunge into a life-changing year-long journey incommunities around the world. As they share their gifts of service, they also receive the gifts of their hosts' hospitality, engaging in relationships of mutuality, interdependence, solidarity and trust.

Since its inception, the program has grown from just 10 volunteers serving in one country to more than 60serving in nine countries. Your gifts help us expand this program. No matter where or how they serve, everyone of our Young Adults in Global Mission needs your prayers, support and gifts to succeed in their work. Itcosts approximately $11,000 to provide one young adult missionary with training, airfare, a small livingallowance, health insurance and simple room and board for a year. That’s just $30 a day to invest in empowering young leaders through life-changing global service. Join us in God’s amazing work. Help raise upyoung leaders.

Worship at Arndt's

Sunday, December 4, 2016 – Second Sunday of Advent - Holy CommunionAt the heart of our Advent preparation stands John the Baptist, who calls us to repent and make a new beginning. As thedarkness increases we turn toward the light of Christ's coming. For Christians he is the root of Jesse, the righteous judgewho welcomes all, especially the poor and meek of the earth. We wait with hope for that day when the wolf will dwellwith the lamb, and there will be no more hurt or destruction. From the Lord's table we are sent in the spirit of John theBaptist to proclaim that in Christ the kingdom of God has come near.

Sunday, December 11, 2016 – Third Sunday of Advent - Holy CommunionA note of joyful expectation marks today's worship. Isaiah announces that the desert shall rejoice and blossom, Jesuspoints to signs of God's reign: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear. We wait with patience for the coming of the Lord, even as we rejoice at his presence among us this day: in word and holy supper, in church and inour homes, in silent reflection and in works of justice and love. We pray that God would open our eyes and ears to thewonders of Christ's advent among us.

Sunday, December 18, 2016 – Fourth Sunday of Advent - Holy CommunionToday Isaiah prophesies that a young woman will bear a son and name him Emmanuel. The gospel is Matthew's accountof the annunciation and birth of the one named Emmanuel, God-with-us. During these final days of Advent we pray, "Ocome, O come, Emmanuel," a beloved hymn based on ancient prayers appointed for the seven days preceding Christmas. On this final Sunday in Advent we prepare to celebrate the birth of the one born to save us from the power of sin anddeath.

Saturday, December 24, 2016 – Nativity of Our Lord - Christmas Eve - Holy CommunionOn a long winter evening we gather to proclaim the coming of the light. Isaiah announces that the people who walked indarkness have seen a great light. Paul reminds us that the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all. In the familiar account of Christ's birth, the evening sky is bright with the heavenly host singing, "Glory to God in the highest."Amid our broken world we proclaim that the prince of peace is born among us. God comes to us in human flesh--inChrist's body and blood--so that we may be bearers of divine light to all the world.

Sunday, December 25, 2016 – Nativity of Our Lord - Christmas Day - Holy CommunionOn this Christmas morning the people of God gather to celebrate the birth of the Word made flesh, Christ our Lord. Lukerecounts the familiar story of shepherds and angels; John's gospel tells of the Word that dwells among us, full of graceand truth. The meaning of Christmas is made clear: the light shines in the darkness. It is in the liturgy that we encounterthe Word made flesh--in the people of God gathered together as the body of Christ, and in the meal around the holy table. We go forth to be bearers of light as we proclaim this good news to all the ends of the earth.

Sunday, January 1, 2017 – First Sunday of Christmas - Holy CommunionAs we celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas, our gospel today confronts us with the death of innocent children at the hands of Herod. The birth of Christ does not remove the power of evil from our world, but its light gives us hope as wewalk with all the "holy innocents' of past generations and today who have suffered unjustly. In our gathering aroundword and meal, God continues to redeem us, lift us up and carry us as in days of old.
