Question & Answer

Q. - Do I have to do this course to become an ARO? A. - No, there are many ways to become an ARO and it is up to the Aerodrome Organisation to determine what is adequate training for their personnel. Completing a nationally recognised qualification or skill set is just one means to achieving ARO status. Please refer to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Advisory Circular – AC139-13 for further information about Aerodrome Reporting Officer and Works Safety Officer Training. Q. - Do I have to carry out the practical activities in the pre-course and during the assessment phase? A. - Yes, practical training and assessment is a fundamental principle of vocational training and will enhance your training outcomes. Q. - Does this course include the radio certificate? Do I need the radio certificate? A. - Yes, this course includes the provision of Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC) training and assessment. Anyone using an Air Band aviation radio must hold an approval to do so. (Civil Aviation Regulation 83) Q. - Do I have to do recurrent training when I’m an ARO? A. - It is recommended by CASA (AC-139-13) that recurrent training is undertaken at between 2 and 5 year intervals. It is up to the aerodrome operator to determine when their staff carry out refresher training if at all. Q. - I’m not currently employed in the aerodromes industry. Do I have to keep my ARO credentials up to date and how do I do this? A. - No, there is no requirement to ‘refresh’ your ARO training but you may prefer to do this to improve your resume or for your own personal benefit. Q. - How long will it take me to do the pre-course study component? A. - It is largely dependent on the individual. The theoretical pre-course study will generally take between two to four hours to complete. The practical component of the pre-course requirement involves getting out onto a real aerodrome and becoming familiar with the procedures and practices of that aerodrome. You should carry out practical activities on the aerodrome until you have a comfortable understanding of all the items on the checklist contained in the pre-course assessment document. For corporate clients, your personnel should spend as much time as they need on the aerodrome until you (and the student) are both satisfied with the level of understanding of aerodrome practices and procedures. Q. - Can I become an ARO at any aerodrome following this course? A. - Whilst you may have a certificate of attainment to state you have completed an ARO course, each aerodrome will have unique procedures which must be learnt either on the job or as part of an induction process at that aerodrome. Q. - Why can’t I enrol the day before the course? A. - At one week prior to the course AMS will generally stop accepting enrolments for our public courses held at Jandakot. This is done to ensure there is adequate time remaining for the student to complete their pre-course assessment material and practical activities. Our courses at Jandakot are held once per month so feel free to book into the following months ARO training course. This will give you adequate time to complete your pre-course activities. Q. - How long does it take to get the certificate? A. - Assuming you successfully complete all assessments and participate in the whole course, the certificate will generally be mailed to you one week after the face to face course component has been completed. We will send the certificate to you electronically and then to the address that you used during enrolment. Q. - Where can I ask further questions? A. - [email protected] or contact the AMS office on 08 9221 6777.

CASA Radio Licence Applications

Q. - How long until I receive my Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) radio certificate? A. - Please note that AMS will dispatch all radio paperwork to CASA on the week following the course. The timeframe for CASA to issue the certificate varies. We usually advise a 6 to 8 week turn around based on experience but, it can be quicker. Please contact CASA on 131757 if the certificate has not arrived within this timeframe. Q. – What does the Radio Certificate look like? A. – A Sample Certificate is posted on the left. It is an A4 sized piece of paper printed by CASA. You will also receive an Aviation Reference Number (ARN) from CASA which may arrive in a separate letter. Q. – Do I have to do the English exam? A. – Yes, anyone that applies for an Aeronautical Radio Operator Licence must undergo an associated General English Language Proficiency Assessment in accordance with Civil Aviation Safety Regulation 64.025. AMS will facilitate this assessment during the training.

Q. - What Happens if I do not successfully complete the English Examination? A. – AMS Examiners are only approved by CASA to examine those students who are proficient speakers of English. If the AMS examiner does not consider your English to be ‘expert level standard’ we will refer you to a CASA Approved English Test Centre. We can still undertake your Radio training and assessment but without the associated English Assessment, your application to hold an Aeronautical Radio Operator Licence cannot be completely processed. AMS does not cover costs associated with the provision of third party English Assessment or any associated English training that is required. Q. - English is my second language, will I pass the General English Language Assessment? A. – If English is not your first language this does not necessarily mean that you will not be successful in passing the General English Language Assessment. Q. – I’m still not sure about this English Assessment, will I pass?? A. – If you would like some confidence about your ability to pass the General English Language Assessment, please contact us on 08 9221 6777 and one of our approved English examiners can undertake a brief conversation with you over the phone. Whilst this does not constitute the formal assessment, we can form a pretty good idea of your English speaking capabilities and give you a verbal indication of your ability to successfully complete the General English Language Assessment during the phone call. Q. What do I need to bring with me? A. You MUST bring with you…

or

or

Passport (Any Nationality) Birth Certificate Citizenship Certificate

A. IF POSSIBLE you should also bring…

• A letter from your employer to confirm you have worked at least 3 of the last 5 years in Australia or New Zealand OR • Group certificates to demonstrate you have worked at least 3 of the last 5 years in Australia OR • A Letter or Certificate to confirm you have undertaken (or are undertaking) a secondary school education in Australia or
