IMPORTANT DATES Wed 14 March Year 6 to Camp Fri 16 March Year 6 return from Camp Next Week Cross Country Interschool Sports – Year 5 & 6
Bayside Combined Catholic School Swimming Carnival
FROM THE SCHOOL LEADERSHIP
TEAM
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members, School Board Last week we held our first School Board meeting for the year. During the meeting we said goodbye to Mr Dorian Anderson and thanked him for his service on the School Board for the last six years. Dorian has decided that the time has come to cease his membership on the Board after this considerable time. We have appreciated Dorian’s willingness to volunteer such considerable amount of his time to be part of the group who overseas policy and governance for St Rita’s. Thank you, Dorian. Year 6 Camp This week our Year 6 students will attend camp for three days from Wednesday to Friday. Thank you to Mrs Therese Rae, Ms Maria O’Donnell, Ms Aoife Condron, Mrs Toni Schmalkuche, Mr Raymond Schwartz and Mr Nathan Mulhearn for being willing to accompany our Year 6 students to camp. I am sure that like me, you appreciate them doing this for their students as it that it means they are taking time away from own families. I wish them and the Year 6 students all the best for a successful camp. Fees and Funding School Fee accounts for Term 1 were due a week ago and I ask you to attend to this matter as a priority, if you have not already done so. Fees and levies collected at St Rita’s Primary School are used for the following purpose. They :-
Provide teaching, administrative and ground staff
Provide essential resources, materials, facilities and equipment. Resources for such areas as literacy, sporting and technology need to be replenished and upgraded annually.
Are used for maintenance and development of buildings, grounds and school maintenance equipment. The current projects to refurbish the toilets and correct the drainage on the oval and overland are examples of major works needed to be funded.
Pay for essential utilities (electricity, water and rates) and insurance.
While our school does benefit from substantial support provided by State and Federal Governments for their recurrent and capital needs, these funds do not cover all costs associated with meeting the escalating costs of providing education and facilities to all of our students. School fees are vital for supplementing the funds provided by Brisbane Catholic Education and State and Federal Governments. Prep 2019 We have already begun the Prep Interviewing process for enrolments for 2019 and at this stage have a healthy number with 74 applications. This means that the calendars for Brian, Nathan and I are also filling up fast. These numbers are great and would almost fill our three classes for next year. It is be really important to have any applications forms submitted

FROM APRE Holy Week – During Holy Week we will have prayer liturgies during the afternoons (time to be confirmed). Year 2 and 3 will get us underway with Palm Sunday on Tuesday, Year 4 and 5 will follow with The Last Sunday and then Year 6 will lead the Crucifixion on Thursday. Prep and Year 1 will then take us through the joy of the Resurrection when we return from the holiday break. Free Dress Day – National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence – This Friday we will have a free dress day to recognise the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Students are encouraged to wear orange and bring a gold coin donation. Money collected will go towards Project Compassion. There are a number of resources available on the following website - https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/NationalDay
Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:
mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)
not liking someone or a single act of social rejection
one-off acts of meanness or spite
isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.
FROM PLL Prep have been sorting lots of objects including living and non-living things .They are working with numbers to 5 and learning to write them. Also been sorting living and non-living things.
Year 1 are learning about adding numbers and are using a variety of materials to practise joining groups together. They are also learning about Noah's Ark and the rainbow, which is the symbol of God's promise. In connection with this they are modelling and learning our rainbow facts, those numbers which add up to 10. They are also using blocks and ten frames to model our numbers which add to 10.
Year 2 are working hard to develop a solid understanding of numbers to 100. They have been using the hundreds, tens and ones blocks to represent numbers and their individual white boards to record, rearrange and order a whole range of numbers. We have also been having fun with flipping and turning shapes and working in pairs and small groups as part of a Maths shape challenge each week.
Here is one from Mrs Maclean. Year 3 have had a fraction focus this week and will be creating fraction and shape art to celebrate our learning on Friday. Year 4 Students are using am and pm notation and solving simple time problems. Students are asked to nominate activities that take a given time. They will advance their ability to tell time using a calendar.
Year 5 focus in Maths this week is an inquiry question. "Is the three-player game of Scissors, Paper, Rock fair?" They have worked together in teams to write all the possible outcomes. They have also been gathering data to create graphs to display this data.
Y6 are off going to Camp Goodenough tomorrow They have shared some sites for Maths.

JAMIE OLIVER PROGRAM
Learn Your Fruit and Veg Program Over the last 5 weeks, two Year 3 and two Year 4 classes have been participating in the ‘Jamie Oliver Learn Your Fruit and Veg’ program. The students were introduced to ‘hero’ ingredients such as tomato, cucumber, banana and capsicum. Each lesson they were encouraged to try a piece of each fruit or veg, learned some fun facts and used the ingredient to make Bruschetta, Greek Salad, Fruit Salad and Salsa.
Sally the facilitator instructed the students on how to cut safely with a knife, drizzle like Jamie and how to make cooking fun and interesting. Below is a short recount from one of the Year 3 students. The Jamie Oliver program is a great opportunity for kids to learn how to cook healthy food and have fun while doing that. So far, we have learned how to cook delicious bruschetta and fruit salad. The person who has been teaching us to cook all these wonderful foods is Sally. She is a wonderful woman who loves to cook. I now know that Jamie likes to pour things from a height and knows a lot of safe and smart tricks. It was brilliant. I felt like a chef myself. Kate K 3T
