Clinic Tips Kayleen Galvan, R.N., BSN The cold and flu season is here! Some simple things too prevent the spread of viruses:

• Do not share drinks or eating utensils with friends.

• Frequently wash hands with warm water.

• Dress appropriately for the cold temperatures.

• Get enough sleep.

• A healthy diet can help ward off viral infections.

I know it can be a struggle for parents to figure out if their child has the flu or just a cold? Should they be sent to school or kept home? Hopefully this information will help you when deciding. Please remember if your child does run a fever, they need to stay home.

STAY HOME WHEN SICK: Those with flu-like symptoms should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or greater) or signs of a fever, without the use of fever reducing medicines. They should stay home even if they are using antiviral drugs. Thank you again for your time and please feel free to contact me with any medical concerns that you might have about your student. I can be reached at 571-434-3223.

IMPORTANT: Students who have fevers should be kept at home until free of fever for 24 hours. Students who do not feel well should stay home. When students come to school ill, they not only are unable to participate fully in class, but they may also infect other students with their illness.

As of this year, Loudoun County Public Schools no longer provides Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for students.

I hope that this Winter Break was full of memorable times for your family. As the holidays arrived, it was heartwarming to see how proactive our community is toward helping those less fortunate. We were able to provide double meals for families in need over the break and gifts for students that might not have received any for the holidays through our Giving Tree.

Soon students will begin thinking about their classes for the next academic year. This is a great opportunity to discuss with your child their academic performance at the midpoint in the year. Get involved in this process by encouraging them to take on a challenge, and maybe step out of their comfort zone next year. Sometimes children feel empowered to reach higher, knowing that they can count on their parents' support. As a reminder for the remainder of winter, please ensure that your child dresses warmly on cold days. If your family needs help securing warm clothing or any other type of assistance, please contact me by email or by phone.

The RBMS Library continues to be a busy hub of the building. Over the last quarter we welcomed some big names in young adult literature, including Alan Gratz (Refugee, Grenade, Projekt1065) and Jason Reynolds & Brendan Keily, authors of the 1Book1Community selection All American Boys. These authors spoke in very meaningful and engaging ways to our students and it was an honor to welcome them to our school. Looking ahead, we are planning two big evening events ~ a Family Game Night in February, and an official “Bob Ross” Family Paint Night in March. Be sure to watch for dates and times for these special Library sponsored events. As always, we are looking forward to our next shipment of new books, including the latest additions to popular series, new works from popular authors and some personal requests from students and staff. Feel free to stop by and visit the hub! Happy reading!!

It's time to start thinking about the PTA Executive Board and Committee Chairpersons for the next school year. Membership in the River Bend Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is an invaluable way to contribute to your child's education and stay connected with your student during middle school. It's a great way to find out what's going on in River Bend and the Loudoun County Public Schools; and to stay in touch with the Principal and other staff members. The position descriptions can be found on the PTA tab of the RBMS website.

We are currently partnering with many great businesses including K&H Landscaping, Barakat Orthodontics, Jersey Mike’s, Chick-Fil-A, Papa Johns, Abbotts Custard, and Tart Lumber to name a few.

K&H Landscaping Engineers spent time in our 8th grade math classes to explain the importance of accurate math skills as they relate to landscaping.

Jersey Mike's donated lunch for our Rich Math Tasks training with Kjersti Oliver in December. They also donated 150 Free Sub coupons for our Honor Roll recipients.

In the spring we are looking forward to our 5K Run/Fundraiser for our Health and PE dept. We have sponsorship opportunities available. Please contact Ron Cummings for more information.

The course selection process for classes to be taken during the 2019-20 school year has begun. All academic teachers have made recommendations for each student suggesting what level of classes they should take next year. Each student had the opportunity to choose their electives. Parents and students together can make their final selections on classes. The absolute deadline to make changes to the course requests will be May 1, 2019. We ask that you please consider the teacher recommendations when making your choices. **Remember that the teachers see your child in the academic setting and have a very good idea about their ability level as well as their work ethic. Although parents have the ultimate say in this decision, please consider the teacher’s recommendation.

Rising 9th graders During the month of February 8th graders will choose their classes for 9th grade. Parents will receive a copy of the classes chosen and changes may be made by contacting Ms. Lorden, 8th grade counselor. After any changes are made, the course selections will be sent home with the 3rd quarter report card. By the end of the year, each student will also be provided with an Academic Career Plan. This plan will illustrate the projected classes a

student will enroll in throughout high school based on their 9th grade selections.

Additional activities for the rising 9th grade will include a visit to Potomac Falls to learn about the extracurricular activities that are offered. The activities fair will be planned in the spring. Please note that all academic planning timelines for rising 9th graders are set by PFHS.

End of Quarter News The end of the 2nd grading period and first semester was January 17th. It is so important for parents to dialogue with their children about school and academic progress. Report Cards for Quarter 2 are now viewable in ParentVUE. If you are concerned about a class, please contact that teacher directly. If you would like to schedule a conference with all your child’s teachers, you may do so through the grade level counselor. Please remember that to be promoted to the next grade, students MUST pass 3 out of the 4 academic subjects. If they fail 2 or 3 classes, they MUST attend summer recovery to be promoted. If they fail 4 classes, summer recovery is not an option and the Principal must consider retention.

Info from Thomas Jefferson School of Science & Technology The final admissions decisions will be posted via the student’s online portal on Tuesday, April 30th.
