Bum the Dog Kid’s Club is for kids ages 5 -11 who want to learn more about the community in which we live.
‘Round the Reading Room: Celebrity Seuss Readings Saturday, Sept 12, 2 pm: Bring the whole family to hear Dr. Seuss stories read by Darlene Shiley, philanthropist.
The San Diego Maker Faire Saturday & Sunday, Oct 3-4, 10 am - 6 pm throughout Balboa Park: Makers will be exhibiting in the San Diego History Center during this family-friendly festival of invention and creativity celebrating the Maker movement.
Participation in Maker activities requires separate tickets and are not part of the Kids Free in October promotion. 1- and 2-day tickets available at sdmakerfaire.org/buy-tickets
Museum Mash Up & Kick off to Kids Free in OctoberSaturday, Oct 3, 1-4 pm at Jacob’s Center for Neighborhood Innovation: Join our regional museum community and cultural attractions for this family friendly kick-off event. Engaging hand-on projects, activities, special guest appearances, and an array of live performances by neighborhood groups.

As students like you head back to school across San Diego County, Bum is taking a look to see what school looked like for children in the past.
Bum has discovered that the first schools in San Diego had all grade levels in one classroom. There were no water fountains, so students would
take turns drinking water out of a bucket with a ladle. Many students did not attend school beyond the 8th grade and sometimes students even
had jobs while they were still in school!
Bum is wandering the streets of San Diego looking for the Mason St. School – help him through the maze to get to class on time.
While sniffing around, Bum spotted someone’s lost homework blowing through the breeze. Take a look to see what students were doing over 100 years ago. Are you able to answer any of these questions about your school? Grab a blank sheet of paper to give it a try!
WRITTEN EXERCISE
Have pupils write a description of their school house and grounds on the
plan below. Assist them in getting necessary information:

(e) SURROUNDINGS – pleasant or not, and why; trees or stones in the yard, etc.
(f) Kind of wood in pupils’ desks, in teacher’s desk; where obtained
(g) WALLS – tinted, papered, clean, soiled, etc.
