    etter from the President

    April 12, 2010

    Greetings Members,

The Match this year should be exciting. I've talked to severalpeople who are coming to show. The purpose of a FUN Matchis tobe FUN! Our match being a non sanctioned match makes it morelike a showcase. Our colors are seen all in one place instead of theoccasional apricot found at most shows. There will also be amembers meeting immediately following the match where we willmake plans for the coming year. Anyone who has suggestions

or agenda items for the meeting needs to get them to me now, sothat I can have them ready for the meeting. Please email with [email protected]

Raffle items to be donated can be sent to me at home if theycan be received before Saturday April 25. email me for my addressplease. Members are also welcome to bring raffle items to the matchwhen they arrive. Try to bring apricot poodle related items that willmotivate people to buy tickets. Money from the raffle will add to ouryearly donation to PCA for a poodle health cause. Vendors have

been very generous this year with small items for the raffle but westill don't have too many big things. I have scissors from Oster, ascissor case from Shear Design, poodle magnets, poodle bands, and hopefully a chain saw sculptor. Vetgen, Optigen, Poodle Varietyhave all promised to send something. The Cookie Man also usuallybrings us a donation as well. Ceramic and glass poodle items arealso popular. Doggie items of all kinds are welcome. Clean out yourcupboards and perhaps something you no longer need will be

another person's treasure.Hope to see everyone on Monday.

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased CocoMulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelledand it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypsodecided the mulch smelled good enough toeat and devoured a large helping. Shevomited a few times which was typical when she eats something newbut wasn't acting lethargic in any way. Thenext day, Mom woke up and took Calypsoout for her morning walk. Half way throughthe walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warningsprinted on the label, upon furtherinvestigation on the company's web site,

this product is HIGHLY toxic todogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's,and they claim that "It is true that studieshave shown that 50% of the dogs that eatCocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending oneach individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it." Snopes givesthe following formation:www.snopes.com/critters/crusager.cocoamulch.asp

Cocao Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply andother Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'TheobromineIt is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last

    2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which istoxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities oftheobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine andtheophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made fromcacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later.Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealethe resence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

I think that any dog being bred should have health testing done, genetic, OFA hips and Cerf eyes. I aminterested in rally and agility; I am also interested in showing in conformation. My goal in breeding is to hopefully improve onthe red standard. I would like to see them compete in the show ring, with beautiful conformation, and wonderfultemperament. I would like to join the club to be with like minded people who are also interested in improving the Reds andApricots.

    CAUTION!

    MANDATORY Spay/Neuter AHEAD

    Sunday, February 28, 2010

Periodically, a number of facts seem to fall into place, revealing a truth that

might not have been apparent previously. Something like this happened to methis week. I had been wondering how it is possible for Americans to be soenchanted with dogs as pets, and at the same time, to hold beliefs that, if putinto action, would actually eliminate the species in a relatively short time. Let mereview the situation, and let's see if you agree with my conclusions.

Roughly 37 percent of American homes include at least one pet dog. Most people at least pay lipservice to an appreciation of how much dogs add to our lives and to our culture. While dogs no longerhave the job of warning cave dwellers of approaching danger, the jobs they do perform for us couldbe even more valuable.

Some very special dogs and their handlers search destroyed buildings seeking for survivors, andfor the bodies of those who did not survive. Perhaps you noticed the news clips of search and rescuedogs working in the jumble of what used to be homes and businesses in Haiti? If you ever fly, thenperhaps you have seen bomb or drug detection dogs making us safer at airports? Military dogs aredescribed by their handlers as their most valuable and reliable protection against roadside bombs. The Dover Public Library is just one of many where dogs patiently help children learn to read. Dogscan also predict epileptic seizures, and locate and predict cancers in humans.

Certainly the tasks performed by dogs no longer fit their job description when they lived with

prehistoric people, but an argument could easily be made that their modern jobs are even moreimportant. Studies show that dogs help us maintain good health. They encourage exercise and socialcontacts. I've been told that walking with a dog is the best way to meet new friends. I think it is safe tosay that dogs have earned their place in our hearts and in our society. And yet ...

And yet laws requiring the mandatory spay and neuter of all dogs are spreading throughout thecountry. I wonder if people have given much thought to the only possible result if the MSN lawsbecome universal? Logically, if all dogs are surgically neutered, then in about 10 years there will beno dogs.

If all breeding is stopped - where will you find the replacement for the dogs you love now? If you

should want to add a purpose-bred dog to your family - will you still be able to do so in another 10 orso years?

James Serpell, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, has said: "The thing aboutmandatory spay-neuter is that those who are most willing to have their dogs spayed orneutered tend to be responsible people. And often, their dogs also happen to be nice animalsin temperament. So what you're doing essentially is taking those dogs out of the breedingpopulation. What will become of dog ownership if only the ill-tempered puppies fromdisreputable breeding programs are available?"

    Letter Continued

Dog and cat owners have certainly grasped the idea thatresponsible pet ownership entails being responsible for thereproductive capacity of their pets. Somehow, the idea ispushed that vast numbers of dogs are roaming around thecountry, reproducing at any and every opportunity. In actualfact, the reverse is true. Nationally, over 87 percent of dogs

    have already been surgically neutered.

Our figures here in the northeast are even more impressive.Last August, I asked three friends to help me perform asurvey of veterinary hospitals throughout New Hampshire. Iwas surprised to learn that 98 percent of owned cats and 95percent of dogs had been surgically neutered. Yes, we havea population of feral cats. But our pet owners have takentheir responsibility to heart, as do owners throughout the

    north-east.

Here is one example of the adage "no good deed goesunpunished." Since this area of the country has a dearth ofavailable dogs, and especially shelter dogs - we havebecome the repository of dogs, many with physical orbehavioral problems that make them difficult for novice dogowners to deal with, from third-world countries and fromparts of our South - where laws and programs such as wehave are not established.

So - should we welcome these imported dogs, even if in sodoing we put some of our own dogs at risk? Or should wehelp other parts of our country to grasp the lessons we havelearned?

Being a responsible dog owner does not mean that all of ourdogs should be neutered. What it does mean is that insteadof importing potentially problematic dogs here, those groups

who are profiting from these imports should focus theirattention on changing attitudes in the areas these dogscome from.

So - do you really want ALL dogs to be neutered?

    ----warning -----warning------warning-----warning--Editors Rant---warning -----warning------warning-----warning---

If its not one thing, then its another As if I don

already have enough To Dos on my list.

How much effect can I have on an avalanche, anyway? Im just one voice and God knows, to

date, none of my elected officials seem to have

paid the LEAST bit of attention to my preferences

Theyre too busy hiding my tax dollars in their

freezers (Im in New Orleans, Louisiana, dont

    forget!)

Last year one of our Orleans Parish council

members put forth a Mandatory Spay/Neuter

ordinance (MSN). At first, I, like many others, had

the knee jerk reaction of, Oh! Well that would bnice and then I bothered to actually do my

    homework on the subject.

I wish I could say the End of the Story was that

local pet owners sent emails and called their

council members and offered solutions and the

ordinance was removed. But that was only The

    End of Part One.

Part Two: Its Baa aaaaack started last week with

a Pit Bull attack. Instead of addressing poverty

and street gangs and drugs ruling ourneighborhoods the offered solution is to

spay/neuter all animals (whether or not the Pit

was intact is actually not known).

So, its time to do it all again. Whatever the cost

in time and effort, Ill email my council members

and email my friends and start petitions and sign

petitions. Ill hand out educational flyers at Pet

Fest and speak at City Council Meetings. Ill

volunteer my time to our local schools for Pet

    Education.

Ill stand up and protect my rights as a pet owner

and Ill fight for your rights, too.

We are MUCHmore effective, though, when we

stand together. Consider looking into the many

ways that you, as a responsible pet owner and

breeder, can be active in your community, city an

    state.

7 Things You Didn't Know About HSUS

    1) The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is a humane society in nameonly, since it doesnt operate a single pet shelter or pet adoption facility anywhere

in the United States. During 2007, HSUS contributed only 3.64 percent of itsbudget to organizations that operate hands-on dog and cat shelters. In reality,HSUS is a wealthy animal-rights lobbying organization (the largest and richeston earth) that agitates for the same goals as PETA and other radical groups.

    2) Beginning on the day of NFL quarterback Michael Vicks 2007 dogfightingindictment, HSUS raised money online with the false promise that it wouldcare for the dogs seized in the Michael Vick case. The New York Times later

reported that HSUS wasnt caring for Vicks dogs at all. And HSUS presidentWayne Pacelle told the Times that his group recommended that governmentofficials put down (that is, kill) the dogs rather than adopt them out to suitablehomes. HSUS later quietly altered its Internet fundraising pitch.

    3) HSUSs senior management includes a former spokesman for the AnimalLiberation Front (ALF), a criminal group designated as terrorists by the FBI.HSUS president Wayne Pacelle hired John J.P. Goodwin in 1997, the same yearGoodwin described himself as spokesperson for the ALF while he fielded media

calls in the wake of an ALF arson attack at a California veal processing plant. In 1997, when asked by reporters for a reaction to an ALF arson fire at a farmersfeed co-op in Utah (which nearly killed a family sleeping on the premises), Goodwinreplied, Were ecstatic. That same year, Goodwin was arrested at a UC Davisprotest celebrating the 10-year anniversary of an ALF arson at the university thatcaused $5 million in damage. And in 1998, Goodwin described himself publiclyas a former member of ALF.

    4) According to a 2008 Los Angeles Times investigation, less than 12 percent ofmoney raised for HSUS by California telemarketers actually ends up in HSUSs bankaccount. The rest is kept by professional fundraisers. And if you exclude twocampaigns run for HSUS by the Build-a-Bear Workshop retail chain, which consistedof the sale of surplus stuffed animals (not really fundraising), HSUSs yield numbershrinks to just 3 percent. Sadly, this appears typical. In 2004, HSUS ran a telemarketingcampaign in Connecticut with fundraisers who promised to return a minimum of zeropercent of the proceeds. The campaign raised over $1.4 million. Not only did absolutelynone of that mone o to HSUS, but the rou aid $175,000 for the telemarketin work.

    5) Research shows that HSUSs heavily promoted U.S. boycott of Canadianseafoodannounced in 2005 as a protest against Canadas annual seal huntisa phony exercise in media manipulation. A 2006 investigation found that 78 percentof the restaurants and seafood distributors described by HSUS as boycotters werentparticipating at all. Nearly two-thirds of them told surveyors they were completely

unaware HSUS was using their names in connection with an international boycottcampaign. Canadas federal government is on record about this deception, saying:Some animal rights groups have been misleading the public for years its nosurprise at all that the richest of them would mislead the public with a phony seafood

    boycott.

    6) HSUS raised a reported $34 million in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, supposedlyto help reunite lost pets with their owners. But comparatively little of that money wasspent for its intended purpose. Louisianas Attorney General shuttered his

18-month-long investigation into where most of these millions went, shortly afterHSUS announced its plan to contribute $600,000 toward the construction of ananimal shelter on the grounds of a state prison. Public disclosures of the dispositionof the $34 million in Katrina-related donations add up to less than $7 million.

    7) After gathering undercover video footage of improper animal handling at aChino, CA slaughterhouse during November of 2007, HSUS sat on its videoevidence for three months, even refusing to share it with the U.S. Department

of Agriculture. HSUSs Dr. Michael Greger testified before Congress that theSan Bernardino County (CA) District Attorneys office asked the group to hold on to the

information while they completed their investigation. But the District Attorneys office quickly denied that account, even declaring thatHSUS refused to make its undercover spy available to investigators if the USDAwere present at those meetings. Ultimately, HSUS chose to release its video footageat a more politically opportune time, as it prepared to launch a livestock-related ballotcampaign in California. Meanwhile, meat from the slaughterhouse continued to flow

into the U.S. food supply for months.

TheDogPress04|01|10 - It was a busy Monday, much like any other Monday this winter. The old bones were aching fromclearing the driveway of the output of still another snowstorm. I was thinking acouple aspirins and a nap might be a good idea when Rob Cook perkedthings up. He had just forwarded a press release to me.

Did you get this? he asked in his email.

I looked at the headline:Racketeering Lawsuit Fingers Humane Society of the United States?.

Now thats an attention grabber. A vision of the ever dapper Wayne Pacelle, the top gun at HSUS, decked in prison stripes instead of Armani, flashedthrough my head. Who, I thought, was giving HSUS the finger?

Turns out it was Ringling Brothers, those kindly circus folk that HSUS and afew other animal rights organizations hammered with an animal crueltycharge a few years ago. In October, 2008, Federal Court proceedings beganin a case involving a 2007 lawsuit filed against Ringling Brothers and Barnum& Bailey Circus, claiming their famous elephants were subjected to cruel andinhumane treatment.

The suit alleged that the circus staff routinely beat elephants, chain them forlong periods of time, hit them with sharp bull hooks, break baby elephantswith force to make them submissive, and forcibly remove baby elephantsfrom their mothers before they are weaned.

After some top flight lawyers on both sides of the issue fought it out in court, mano a mano, Ringling Bros was exonerated. On January 27, theEntertainment Law Digest reported A federal judge dismissed for lack ofstanding an animal cruelty lawsuit against the owner of the Ringling Bros.

and Barnum & Bailey, saying the lead plaintiff, a former elephant caretaker, had received nearly $200,000 in illegal payouts from animal rightsadvocates.

It didnt take long for Barnum lawyers to strike back with that RICO suit, didit? Uncovering the existence of the suit were the folks at Center forConsumer Freedom who posted a link to the papers on their just opened website www.humanewatch.org. David Martosko, one of the more outspokenfolks at CCF and their Director of Research, was my first call. Would you be

    NATIONAL REPORT

At last count, in 2006, 287,000 dogs crossed theUnited States' borders, and veterinary officials fear theproblem is getting worse.

Consumer demand for pure-bred and cross-bred puppiescoupled with strict new domestic breeding laws is believed tobe driving importation numbers even higher than four yearsago. To exacerbate the problem, federal regulators have noreal way of tracking exactly how many dogs are brought in thecountry, where they come from, where they are going andwhether importers are following up on vaccinationrequirements for underage puppies.

"One thing that really concerns veterinarians is, underagepuppies come in and not only are they at greater risk ofzoonotic diseases, but also other canine diseases," says NinaMarano, DVM, of the Center for Disease Control andPrevention's (CDC) Division of Global Migration andQuarantine.

"It is a concern. It's a consumer issue; Its a public health

issue; it's a veterinary issue. Really, it's a moral and ethicalissue."...

    Hello Folks

It is a difficult day for dog breeders in Nova Scotia. In spite

of letters written by the CKC and meetings and discussionswith veterinarians, the Council of the NSVMA has imposed aban on the procedures that it has deemed to be 'cosmetic' innature and that impact our purebred dogs in a mostsignificant way.

I am sure you will find it as interesting as I that cat de-clawsare not included in this ban.

Attached is the announcement that ear cropping, tail dockingand dew claw removal has now been taken out of the handsof veterinarians in Nova Scotia as of April 1 with a 6 monthlead in to the total ban in this province.

Note also the Veterinary interpretation in the Q and Aattachment with respect to breeders who perform any ofthese procedures.

When a Pet Passes On. . .Coping with the emptiness left behind

    By Alison Landis Stone

Before my husband and I got a dog, I had to work through my fears of losing a pet. It felt sort ofsilly that I was worried about dealing with the death of a pet before we even found one to give a home to.

But Id already lost my childhood dog, and Id witnessed how devastating the loss was to my father, whohad taken care of Blackjack for several years after I had moved out of the house.

At 16 years of age and suffering from numerous ailments, Blackjack was nearing the end of hisnatural life when my dad made the heart-wrenching decision to have him euthanized. Our dog limpedaround from an old ankle injury that got more and more difficult to deal with as he aged, and he couldntsee because of the cataracts clouding his vision. When Blackjack became incontinent, my father decidedit was time to let our dog go.

    A SPECIAL BOND

For most pet owners, the connection we have with our pets is often as strong as or stronger thanour relationships with other people. Many people say that animals provide us with a type ofcompanionship and emotional intimacy that humans cant quite manage to provide for each other, saysJeannine Moa, MA, MSW, LICSW, director of social work services at the University of MinnesotasVeterinary Medical Center. Humans struggle to give themselves this freely and without expectation or

judgment. This bond goes beyond words; it explains the way we feel when we hold our pets in our lap,the pleasure we get in watching them enjoy life so fully and how they just always seem to know when weneed comfort.

The close bond we share with our pets can make it seem impossible to cope with the loss when apet dies. The human-pet relationship has a great level of intimacy, says Stephanie LaFarge, PhD,

senior director of counseling services for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(ASPCA) and a psychologist who specializes in the human-animal bond. Once the animal isnt in thehouse anymore, the emptiness is huge. Moga agrees. People who enjoy this kind of intimate andsupportive relationship with animals will keenly grieve the loss of those animals, she says.

    LACK OF SOCIAL SUPPORT

The relationship between pet and owner has changed significantly in recent years. Pets havegone from the backyard to the bedroom, Dr. LaFarge says. As a result, our culture is moving toward anacknowledgement that our relationships with our companion animals are important.

We are concerned for their wellbeing, much the way parents watch out for their children. WE makesure our pets receive the best food, the highest quality medical care, and plenty of toys to keep theirbodies and minds busy. We drop them off at day care, take them on long walks, and let them run to theirhearts content in dog parks. There is even a new term for us:pet parents.

But although society is beginning to accept that the owner-pet relationship is important, manypeople who dont share their lives with pets dont understand how special these relationships are. Ourculture does not acknowledge that when an animal dies, its as important a loss as that of a person, explains Dr. LaFarge. There is a lack of acknowledgement in our society that our relationship with eachpet is unique and cant be replaced.

When a Pet Passes On. . .Coping with the emptiness left behind

There isnt a lot of social support for the relationship or the grief process that results from itsloss, says Moga. It can be tough for folks who have not experienced a meaningful relation with an animalto understand why these relationships are so emotional and sometimes physically important to people.

    EMOTIONAL OVERLOAD

The death of a pet is often emotionally overwhelming. For the first several weeks afterward, itsnormal for grieving pet parents to not eat or sleep well. They may even hallucinate, thinking they see orhear their pet in the house. After some time, people start to feel bittersweet pain when remembering theirloved one. Eventually, Dr. LaFarge says, they realize the pet is still part of their being because when theythink about him or her, remembering feels good.

Its not unusual for people to feel like they will never get over a loss. How long does it take to startfeeling normal again? There is no agreed-upon timetable for grief. Every individuals process will beunique, Moga says. The key is to realize that our goal is not to get over the loss of a pet, but to learnhow to live with how our lives change when an animal leaves us. When we are able to rejoice in memories

of them and can recognize how our relationship with them changed us for the better, those are signs thatthe grief is starting to resolve. Getting to this point may take many months or even years.

Sometimes bereavement can last well beyond when the grieving process should have resolved.Called a pathological grief response, this happens when a person cant get past his or her grief eventhough a long time has passed. Its like having an infection you cant get rid of, Dr. LaFarge explains. The loss of the pet triggers other types of mental distress. At this point, its no longer about the animal.

The symptoms of pathological grief are similar to those of the early stages of normal grief, such ascrying, desperate yearning for the pet, difficulty acknowledging the death, impaired social andoccupational functioning, and an inability to concentrate. A mental health professional can help resolve

this type of grief.FEELINGS OF GUILT

For responsible pet owners who take care of their animals, a pets death can bring on feelings ofguilt, especially if the pet died suddenly or tragically. Its rare for the people who lose a pet to not feelguilty afterward because we feel like we should be able to prevent bad things from happening to those welove, says Moga. Regardless of the situation; there are a couple of things to keep in mind; first, it is not alock of love that tragedy occurs. Second, when awful things happen-and they sometimes do-it is importantto remind ourselves of the countless things weve done right for our animals.

    A HARD CHOICE

Sometimes the owner might begin grieving even before a pet dies. This reaction is especiallycommon when a pet is suffering from a terminal disease or if the pets quality of life is declining. If you areconcerned about your pets health, talk to your veterinarian about your options. Depending on thecircumstances, he or she might discuss euthanasia as a possible avenue foralleviating your pets pain.

Even in a situation where a pet is obviously suffering, deciding whether to end a pets life is nevereasy and can be devastating to caring owners. Making a decision to euthanize an animal is almostalways heart-wrenching and complicated-and it should never be taken lightly, says Moga.

People needto weigh all the medical, behavioral, and emotional facts involved to determine when it is appropriate tofacilitate death. Owners should communicate any concerns or requests to their veterinarian.

    FINDING SUPPORT

When you have experienced the loss of a beloved pet, finding a network of supportive people whocan listen and sympathize can help you cope better during this difficult time. I think people are more ableto work through the death of a loved one when they have abundant social and emotional support for thatprocess, Moga says.

If you can, talk with other people who have gone through or are dealing with similar experiences.Family members and friends may be sympathetic, especially if they your pet or have pets of their own.Coworkers who have pets may also offer comfort. Many veterinary hospitals, shelters, and universities

provide pet loss hotlines, where you can talk with professionals who have been trained to help others copewith the loss of a pet. These same organizations may also offer support groups. Ask your veterinarian if heor she can recommend a local group.

    HONORING YOUR PET

All cultures have traditions they follow when a loved one passes on. Although our society has notset up standard rituals to mark the passing of companion animals, pet parents may find comfort inhonoring their pets and saying goodbye in a special way:

Hold a memorial service. Ask family and friends to join you as you remember your pet.

Create a living memorial. Plant a tree or flower in your yard in memory of your pet.Share your memories. Make a scrapbook, write a poem or story, about your time together.Make a donation in your pets name.Keep something that was special to your pet.
