what to expectNathasha answers pregnant women’s top three questions: Q: How many ultrasounds do I need?A: You only really need two scans during your pregnancy: one at 12 weeks (for congenital abnormality screening) and one at 20 weeks (for organ screening).

Q: How do I know that my baby is growing and when will I start to feel movement?A: Babies in the first trimester usually grow well. Their first movements are often felt between 16 and 24 weeks.

Q: Why am I so tired in the first trimester? A: A huge amount of energy goes into building the placenta for your baby. If you can, nap during the day or try and get nine hours’ sleep at night.

Once your baby becomes mobile she will need more energy from her diet. Here’s how to make the transition to soft, solid food a pleasant experience for you both.

Solids should be introduced at six months to help ensure that your baby receives all the vitamins and minerals she needs to grow into a healthy child. Start off with a cereal that’s rich in iron, such as maize or rice, followed by smoothly pureed single variety fruits and vegetables. Try pumpkin, potato, pear, banana and so on. Begin with one to two

teaspoons and build up gradually. Allow three days between types to see whether your baby has any adverse reaction. Give her milk at feeding times before you feed her solids and, after six months of age, solids before milk. Encourage chewing at around nine months by including coarser foods such as small, visible pieces of fruit.
