Hamfest Chattanooga 2017 is growing and on the move!

The Chattanooga Amateur Radio Club celebrates its 39th annual hamfest on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 8 AM - 2 PM EDT at the East Ridge Community Center, 1517 Tombras Avenue, in East Ridge, TN.

Our Hamfest Team has worked hard to make this one of our best events ever and it shows! We’re sold out of inside vendor space though we still have room in the outdoor flea market area. We have several new vendors which bring a wider scope to the offerings of our vendors to the Amateur Radio community. ARRL — Hurricane Support

Amateur Radio is in the spotlight due to the support that Amateur Radio Operators are providing during

the multiple hurricanes that have impacted Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. The ARRL has deployed a

team of 50 amateur radio operators to Puerto Rico to provide on-the-ground disaster communications

support on the island. There are multiple efforts supported by Amateur Radio operators, within the impact-

ed areas, and at state and local levels. For current information about hurricane support, see the “Latest

News” section on the ARRL Home Page at: http://www.arrl.org/home (see sample below):

The Mississippi ARES Emergency Net commenced operations on Saturday, October 7 in response to

Hurricane Nate. Operators in Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee are participating in the net.

THANK YOU to all of the dedicated Amateur Radio Operators who are taking part in the support

activities for the impacted areas, either at the affected sites, or through local support efforts.

W4DXCC DX and Contest Convention (SEDCO)

September 22nd and 23rd, 2017, Pigeon Forge TN

The W4DXCC DX and Contest Convention gave amateur radio operators interested

in DX and in contesting a great opportunity to learn new techniques from the experts!

Ham Radio Bootcamp on Friday was for new and experienced hams alike to learn and relearn new things in

ham radio. The agenda topics included Building your own HF station; Building a 40-Meter Vertical Antenna;

Making DX QSOs, and digital seminars. Attendees heard about JT-65 and FT8 (the hottest new digital

mode), and got to enjoy some hands-on JT8 experience in the “Radio Room”. Presentations wrapped up

with special Guest Dan Henderson N1ND from ARRL talking about “Amateur Radio in the 21st Century”, fol-

lowed by David Shoaf, KG6!RW, who helped those present to understand Remote HF Radios,

Saturday was the main day where presenters from all over come and present DX and Contesting topics. St.

Paul Island DXpedition, CY9C started off the day’s presentations, followed by :ow Band DX’ing and “So you

Want to be a Contester”. The afternoon’s sessions included “RFI from AC Lines”, “Working 6-Meter DX” and

the preparations for the upcoming “Bouvet DXpedition”, scheduled for January 2018. We were honored to

hear from Martin Jue, K5FLU, owner of MFJ Enterprises. Looking forward to next year’s convention!.

DCARES Hurricane Net Support at the Nashville American Red Cross Chapter

Davidson County ARES members provide Amateur Radio Support in response to a

request from the Nashville American Red Cross Chapter. Per Paul Stinson,

KJ4WQN, Davidson County Emergency Coordinator: DCARES members “were

activated for nine days, from 22 Sept to 30 Sept, and covered the Red Cross’ ama-

teur station for a total of 56.5 hours, contributing a total of 84.5 “person

hours. The local Red Cross officials were very

pleased and appreciative of our support. These ac-

tions demonstrate the best in amateur radio. Your

participation shows what amateurs bring to the table

in an emergency and speaks to the quality of opera-

tors in our organization.”

CHATTANOOGA AMATEUR RADIO CLUB

de Gary Ownsby, AK4ZX, President 2017, Chattanooga Amateur Radio Club

The Chattanooga Amateur Radio Club (CARC) traces its origins to the late 1950’s & early ‘60’s. Organized as a 501(c)(3), non-profit corporation exclu-sively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes. It provides Chattanoo-ga and surrounding areas, a fully operational, coordinated, voluntary non-commercial communications service, operated in compliance with FCC regula-tions applicable to the Amateur Radio Service. Equally importantly is that it seeks to provide a helpful, welcoming, structured, & safe, environment to foster the preservation and growth of the finest traditions of Amateur Radio.

Chattanooga’s long history in America’s culture as a railroad hub and in still popular songs like the 1941 “Chattanooga Choo Choo” gave rise to our popular club logo that depicts a vintage, steam-powered locomotive with powerful flashes of lightning representing radio waves. That depiction of a powerful & useful force (Amateur Radio) leading to, and encouraging, self-development, service, and getting on-board with others of like mind, remains the “track” for the CARC.

The CARC encourages recognition that for Amateur Radio to continue to flourish in the coming years, it must not only welcome all modes of operation but to also develop programs to attract those with an interest in the Amateur Radio Service to come aboard and enjoy a lifetime of fun, personal satisfaction, public service to their communities as their “love of radio” grows and takes shape. The club believes that there is room for all modes of operations...from CW, AM, HF, repeaters, and the latest in digital, mixed mode technologies where in a single device supports multiple modes. Each mode provides niches for each radio operator to find and develop their own interests and educate themselves and others by their experiences.

Over the past few years, greater recognition has been given to the fact that people learn differently and that methods of sharing information and learning opportunities need to be flexible. Reflecting such conditions, the CARC offers monthly meetings & FCC testing, a monthly “Calling All Hams Breakfast”, workshops, summer & winter field days, email-based newsletters issued several times each month, weekly nets, and a state-of-the-art website (w4am.net) to share & promote information and learning. The CARC is pleased that in 2017, the ARRL designated the CARC as an ARRL Special Service Club for its wide-ranging support of Amateur Radio.

In keeping with the above, through the efforts of several YLs in the club, a new “YL Net” has been estab-lished. This new net seeks to encourage and promote Amateur Radio, technical skills, and personal develop-ment in the YL community by discussion and information sharing. The net meets weekly on Monday nights. This net is available via local repeater as well as shared via Echolink & the Allstar Network. Details are available on the CARC website (http://w4am.net/local-nets/).

To promote the future of Amateur Radio, the CARC maintains a relationship with local STEM schools and scouting organizations to encourage youth to explore the world of radio through hands-on learning and mentor-ing. Fox hunting and learning workshops help the youth of today understand that radio remains a premier tool in the modern world of communications & data gathering...from radio direction-finding (search & rescue) to inter-planetary communications with robotic probes...radio makes it happen!

The “icing on the cake” for the CARC and its membership, is its annual Hamfest Chattanooga which will in 2018 celebrate its 40th year. As topper to the “hamfest cake”, the CARC is pleased to host the 2018 Tennes-see State ARRL Convention as we move into a much larger hamfest venue offering 27,000 square feet of exhi-bition space.

So get on-board the Amateur Radio train with the CARC. Come visit us in person at our monthly meetings, breakfasts, or join in one of our nets to get to know us better. Better yet, come visit us at Hamfest Chattanooga 2017 on Saturday, October 21st from 8 AM to 2 PM local time for a fun day with your ham radio family & friends.

AMATEUR RADIO EMERGENCY SERVICES (ARES) ... If you are not part of your local Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) group, please consider becoming a member.

They offer valuable services their served communities, not just in times of severe conditions, but many also serve the com-

munications needs for local events. As an ARES member, you will learn ways to enhance your Amateur Radio operating

skills BEFORE you need them. For more information about ARES in the ARRL TN section, check out web page at http://

tnares.com/ .

“ARES volunteers are licensed amateur radio operators who are organized and trained to provide emergency communica-

tions during emergencies and public service events. "When all else fails" is a motto of ARES because in many instances,

amateur radio communications are operational when other communications systems have failed or are over burdened.”

To get involved, simply find the county you wish to serve in on the tnares.com website, and get in contact with the emer-

gency coordinator.
