For LCD displays, the backl ight characteristics will make the display accurate in color reproduction and brighter. As White LED are the backlight main source, engineers should take more care about those white LED power supply ICs. Besides well known
matching and accuracy, the drivers should also integrate more functions in order to associate simpler design with need for more attractive lighting features.
Engineers are facing several challenges. O f course , ma in one i s how to accommodate these power consuming features with the handset usage time between battery charges. Another challenge is the development time. All R&D engineers are always struggling between marketing people who are asking for more innovative functions developed in a minimum of time and the quality engineers who want highly reliable system.
NCP5623 is one of those new ICs’ that will make handsets design engineer’slife easiest. Of course, the proposed architecture is very common and now
FUNLIGHT IN PORTABLE APPLICATION
very well known. A capacitive charge pump boosts the LiIon battery voltage and the LED are connected between the charge pump output and programmable current sinks that will regulate the current and so control the LED brightness. This architecture features a very good 90%+ efficiency. NCP5623 offers also high reliability and safety level, in providing open circuit and short circuit protections.
Besides, the most important and interesting functions NCP5623 features are programmability and flexibility for “fun lighting”. By programming 8 internal registers, using an I2C interface, engineers will have access to embedded functions that will transform an ordinary LED driver to a true “lighting management” IC.
Of course, the LED dimming is very simply achieved by writing the “IPEAK” register. Dimming is pseudo-logarithmic in 31 steps. In addition to this standard d imming, NCP5623 features an automated “Gradual Dimming” function. Up to now, the software effort required to develop such a function was quite high. Now, thanks to NCP5623, software
engineers will easily program it: simply write three registers and your LED brightness will automatically gradually increase or decrease, giving a very attractive look to your handset lighting.
Should you need color lighting, NCP5623
RGB LEDs are a very simple way to give more “fun looking”. NCP5623 features 3 independent fully programmable in 32 steps PWM. RGB LED associated with NCP5623 will now easily allow your handset to reproduce 32768 colors. Programmers will also thank the simple way to achieve color additive synthesis with NCP5623 and RGB LED: each PWM can be set independently by only one I2C register write transaction!
Obviously, NCP5623 will open new horizons to engineers and make developments easiest, cheapest and shorter, without scarifying neither high efficiency for longer battery life time, nor small factor concerns: NCP5623 is packaged in a tiny 2 x 2 x 0.55 mm package.

Advantages of LED LightThe future of outdoor lighting is in LEDs. The many benefits of LED light in applications from outdoor architectural lighting to flashlights to emergency vehicle lighting are well
in those applications apply to outdoor lighting as well:
Long Lifetime & Lumen MaintenanceXLamp® LEDs maintain over 70% of their original luminous flux at 50,000 hours — long after conventional outdoor light sources have burned out.
Led Light Is DirectionalHID-based l i gh t f i x tu res was te approximately 20 to 50 percent of the light generated due to the lack of directionality of the light source. LED-
by making use of a directional point light source.
Great Performance In Cold EnvironmentsUnl ike f luorescent l igh ts , LEDs
temperature decreases. LEDs have no problems turning on in cold weather and are one of the most reliable lighting sources in any outdoor condition.
CREE’s XLAMP® XR-E LEDs IN OUTDOOR APPLICATIONS
Better For The EnvironmentUnlike many conventional lighting technologies, LEDs contain no mercury or heavy metals. Not only are LEDs better for the environment during their operational life, the disposal of LEDs will not further pollute our world’s
XLamp XR-E LEDs in Parking Area LightingXLamp XR-E LEDs can reduce total cost of ownership for parking area lighting. Parking lot lights can be built to serve any application by using multiple XR-E LEDs
in a single fixture. One added benefit of XR-E LED light for this application is that the white LED light scores 80 on the color-rendering index (CRI), compared to a score of 20 or lower for sodium lighting. Not only is the pure white LED light more pleasing to the human eye, it also increases the amount of image information captured on security cameras. Therefore, XLamp LED-based parking garage lights can both decrease the total costs of lighting a parking area and potentially increase safety levels.
XLamp XR-E LEDs in Street LightingXLamp XR-E LEDs offer standard order codes of up to 100 lumens
per LED @ 350 mA. With high light output levels, it takes fewer than 80 XR-E LEDs to equal the useful light output of a typical streetlight. With the much longer lifetime of XLamp LEDs, the total cost of ownership of a streetlight is reduced because the LED streetlight does not require costly bulb replacement events every few years.
Cree is taking an active role in fostering the adoption of XLamp LEDs into the street lighting market. They have proven that XLamp LEDs can achieve an IES Type II Medium pattern and are now working on ways to optimize LED light for outdoor lighting applications.

The concept of this application is a MCU based LED driver with closed-loop current control. A compact LED light source with dimming control is implemented to demonstrate the advantages of using MCU to drive a high brightness LED with different average current settings
The MCU that we use to control LED is using MC9RS08KA2 that extends the advantages of Freescale Semiconductor’s 8-bit microcontrollers into the ultra low-end marketplace. Based on the RS08 reduced instruction set architecture, the cost-effective KA2, in either 6-pin or 8-pin packaging, features more Flash memory than its nearest competitor
all kinds of lighting applications. Simple implementation and ease of integration can help even novice designers cut the design cycle down to just a few weeks.

Component Selection
A schottky diode is recommended for most applications due to their lower forward voltage drop and reverse recovery t ime. Ensure the diode selected can deliver the peak inductor
current and max. reverse voltage is rated greater than the output voltage.
Inductor selection is a balance be-

Large inductance va lue , low DCR and h igh ra ted current reduce the peak-to-peak ripple current, affecting efficiency. The Anotherm substrate material enables design engineers to mount visible LEDs and other components directly to it, so there is no need for attached heatsinks, mounting hardware and other associated costs.
The Anotherm substrates are being populated with LEDs and used as rep lacements fo r i ncandescen t and fluorescent lighting in a variety of applications, including highway signs, bridges and road l ighting. The Anotherm technology efficiently conducts heat away from the LEDs, increasing their lifespan and light output, which is particularly beneficial for applications like highway signage, which often require the use of highway crew and an aerial “bucket” truck, making replacement very expensive.

Misconnections and mishandling may cause large overloads and short-circuits. By isolating critical circuits, the designer can prevent damage to costly components. The resettable functionality of the PPTC device is generally preferred where a metallic interface may act as a portal for overcurrent conditions as well as overvoltage transients.
PPTC devices are also commonly app l ied to p ro tec t c i r cu i t s tha t experience high inrush currents on startup. PPTC devices are much more resilient to inrush currents than fuses and they help eliminate the nuisance of blown fuses, a result of fatigue caused by repeated inrush currents.
Fuses are well suited to circuit designs where resettablity is not desirable, or where faults occur only in a system failure condition. Tyco Electronics

This complete LED driver solution integrates several protection features, including overvoltage protection and a cycle-by-cycle current limit of 0.55 A supporting up to three parallel strings of 20 mA each. A thermal shutdown block provides another layer of protection by shutting down the device once the internal temperature exceeds the 165 °C typical temperature threshold.
To enable fu l l contro l over LED illumination intensity, the SiP12510 and SiP12511 support both linear and PWM techniques for regulating the LED string current. A built-in three-phase soft-start function diminishes the required peak current during start-up by gradually increasing the switch current limit.

21st CENTURY SAR ADCs
such as patient monitoring devices and handheld data acquisition systems.
A tradeoff exists between power, noise, and sampling rate. With a given sampling rate, higher resolution (lower noise) can be achieved—at the expense of increased power—by over sampling. Figure 4 illustrates this relationship for the AD7980. Here the AD7980 is run at three different sampling rates (10 kSPS, 100 kSPS, and 1 MSPS), corresponding to three different power dissipations (0.07 mW, 0.7 mW, and 7 mW). The AD7980 could sample at 10 kSPS, providing 16.8 bits of effective resolution, while consuming 0.07 mW, or it could sample at 1 MSPS (100× over-sampling factor), providing 20 bits of effective resolution, while consuming 7 mW. The Optimum SolutionSAR ADCs are the optimum solution for signal processing applications requiring low power, and high accuracy at medium conversion speeds. The SAR ADC architecture allows for converting asynchronous signals with no pipeline delay. Furthermore, the conversion process can start at anytime.
in 1954 by Bernard Gordon at Epsco. It provided 11-bit resolution at 50-kSPS, and dissipated 500 watts. Comparing this ADC with the AD7980, a 16-bit 1-MSPS ADC that dissipates 7 mW, one can see that the performance of SAR ADCs has improved exponentially versus time. IC (Integrated Circuit) design engineers will continue to look to digital solutions to solve analog problems. Developments in CMOS process technology and packaging will contribute to these solutions. It is almost certain that the SAR architecture will continue to evolve as the 21st century progresses.
A particular data-acquisition system may require 20-bit effective resolution at 10 kSPS. A 20 bit converter running at this sampling rate may exist, but other options may offer a better tradeoff of power, speed, and resolution. In low-power applications, one way to distinguish the vast array of precision converters (including SAR and sigma-delta) from each other is to use the figure of merit shown in equation (2.0). This equation takes into account three critical ADC
The noise term is specifically expressed in rms as ppm of full-scale. This allows a user to compare ADCs of different resolutions and different input ranges. The power dissipation and sampling rate term illustrates how most SAR ADCs scale power with sampling rate, as shown in Figure 3. It also
merit should be low (units are ). As an example, the AD7980’s FOM is 625; an 8-year-old 16-bit SAR ADC’s FOM is 7100.
The rms noise can be extracted from the converter ’s datasheet specifications either from the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or from the effective resolution according to the

Figure 1 illustrates an active current sharing boost converter that can deliver 130W of output power from a either of two redundant 12V power sources, or 260W by load sharing the two 12V power sources. The circuit can also generate 260W from single 12V power source if inputs A and B are tied together.
The centerpiece of the design is the LT3782 current mode PWM controller. Current mode operation ensures balanced current sharing between the two power sources, even if the sources have di fferent vol tages. Current balancing improves efficiency of the entire system by allowing each power source to operate at lower power level
The current balance is achieved by choosing appropriate values of the two current sense resistors, RCS1 and RCS2in Figure 1, to provide relatively more power from the supply with higher output power rating. For example, the currents can be programmed to provide 25% of output power from a 5V source and 75% from a 12V source.
The circuit in Figure 1 can be powered from either input A or input B. The only condition is that at least one of the inputs is greater than 10V, which is required for biasing of PWM controller
Dual Input Boost Converter Shares Power from Two Inputs
circuit U1. Diodes D3 and D4 provide the diode-OR function for biasing of controller U1. The bias power for controller U1 can also be provided by a separate power source. In that case, theoretically, the circuit could regulate with inputs down to 0V. In practice, the lowest required input voltage depends on the control circuit’s maximum duty cycle and output voltage. The circuit in Figure 1 can produce 28V of output voltage from 2V input. However, the higher input current at 2V input will result in lower available output power.
The eff ic iency of th is conver ter (Figure 2) is high enough that it can
be built entirely with surface mount components, without the need for heat sinks. In a 130W, redundant supply application, the power dissipation of 8.4W should be relatively easy to manage; but for 260W application, the circuit’s power dissipation of 17W needs more attention. A well laid out large multilayer PCB with some forced
components cool.
ConclusionThe simple switching power converter shown here can be used to boost one of two redundant supplies, or it can be used to combine the supplies for high power output. Either way, the result is
than a diode-OR circuit, which would dissipate additional power.

Solomon Systech Limited, a world leader in advanced display technology and a Contributor Member in the Mobile Industry Processor Interface (MIPI) Alliance, introduces a new SSD2218 TFT driver controller with an integrated MIPI interface. Together with its SSD2802 MIPI master bridge chip, Solomon Systech brings the world’s first MIPI total solution to the display market.
With an integrated MIPI interface, the number of signal connections between the host processor and the LCD driver is significantly reduced to only four wires. Not only will the solution save on interconnect costs, it will enhance electromagnetic interference (EMI) and reliability, also enabling higher flexibility in the mechanical design o f end produc ts . The SSD2218 alone can work with MIPI-compliant processors. Together with Solomon Systech’s SSD2802 MIPI master bridge chip, non-MIPI processors can also take advantage of the MIPI interface.
SSD2218 is an all-in-one TFT LCD driver controller that integrates power circuits, a source driver and a gate driver, and a high speed MIPI interface into a single chip. The SSD2218 can drive a 262K/16M color amorphous TFT (a-TFT) panel with a resolution of 240 RGB sources X 320 gates. The IC embeds a highly efficient DC-DC converter and a voltage regulator to generate all necessary voltage levels to the a-TFT panel with minimum
external components. It provides an 8-color power-saving mode to reduce the energy consumption in portable devices. The source and gate scan direction can be controlled by software commands. The SSD2218 supports the MIPI 18/24-bit/pixel interface and contains two differential pairs for differential data transfer and differential clock, and also supports a 240 RGB x 320 x 18/24bit x 60Hz real-time display.

Since the drain-to-gate zener diode has an intrinsic breakdown voltage (VZ) lower than the BVDSS, the SAFeFET will never go in breakdown mode and the VDS voltage will be limited at VZ. The Power MOSFETs may be used with breakdown voltages lower than those of standard devices, which at a certain voltage would work in avalanche. This in turn allows the use of on-resistance products and this advantage can be translated in terms of conduction losses during the operation.

Board level decoupling solutions for Intel’s “Yonah” microprocessor have requirements that Z<1.5 mOhms f rom 50 kHz to nea r l y 10 MHz (around 7.5 MHz). Table 1 highlights the f requency po in ts where the decreasing impedance first begins to achieve levels at or below 1.5 mOhms and the frequency where the increasing impedance ends to meet this 1.5 mOhm level. The present day recommendation for decoupling capacitors for this processor are to use six (6) tantalum polymers of 330 uF each (such as KEMET’s T520V337M2R5ATE009), p lus thirty-two (32) ceramic capacitors of C0805C226M9PAC type (middle row of Table 1). Now there are lower ESR capacitors of this type, but the lower ESR in these tantalum capacitors have no im-pact on the breadth of the frequency range at which the impedance is below 1.5 mOhms (bottom row of Table 1).
Although the reduction in ESR from 9
reduction is at 100 kHz through 500 kHz. At 9.33 MHz, the contributing components of impedance for the tantalum and ceramic capacitors are detailed in Table 2. The total o r comb ined impedance o f 1 .5 mOhms is the same for both of these
Board Level Decoupling Solutions Reduce Ceramic Capacitor Count
each plus thirty-two ceramic capacitors. The only way to reduce the ceramic chip piece count ir to
combinations, but it is the impedance of 1.61 mOhms of the ceramic that is the controlling factor. The 33% improvement in ESR from 9 milliohms to 6 milliohms is insignificant at 9.33 MHz, because at this frequency the controlling factor for impedance in the tantalum capacitors is the 2.2 nH of inductance. The increase from 21.38 mOhms to 21.40 mOhms is due to the fact that with lower ESR, the capacitance roll-off is reduced, the de-vice goes into self-resonance earlier, and as it moves above the self-resonance, the lower ESR device is further away from self-resonance than the other one is, its inductive element is less influenced by capacitance, so the impedance is slightly higher.
The net result is that an improvement in ESR in the tantalum capacitor does no t ex tend the f requency range for the 1.5 mOhm impedance requirement. In the higher frequency range, the ceramic chips dominate the performance. In order for the tantalum to impact the impedance range in the higher frequencies, the ESL must be improved.
In Table 3, the 2nd row details the present configuration, and the 3rd row details the results of replacing the standard tantalum with a low ESL,
facedown tantalum package (KEMET’s T528Z337M2R5ATE009). The high frequency range has been ex-tended because the contributing impedance of the tantalum has been reduced as the ESL has been reduced (2.2 nH in standard T520 case to 650 pH in facedown T528 case).
To achieve the same frequency range as the initial combination of 2nd row, the ceramic chip count may be reduced from 32 pieces to 26 pieces, as shown in the 4th row. To achieve the required frequency range of 50 kHz to 7.5 MHz (this is the absolute minimum range of board level decoupling), the ceramic chip piece count may be reduced further still to only 20 pieces as shown in the 5th row.
The reduction in ceramic chip piece count can on ly be ach ieved by extending the tantalum’s impedance contribution in the higher frequencies, and this is only achieved by lowering the ESL of the package. Future developments with this device (T528) may bring the ESL level down to 200 pH or lower, allowing a higher reduction of high CV ceramic chips.
