REPAIR ready to pull the l ifeline

Theres no time left for warnings. Were in it up to our necks right nowinthe climate crisis, Surveillance Society, the bankruptcy of the financialsector Weve passed the points of no r eturn. The dramatic consequencesare looming on the horizon today. And theres no excuse for our lethargysince we already possess ideas, tools and techniques to initiate a change ofcourse. We just have to take action! Roll up our sleeves and get to work on a

job that can no longer be avoided. We have to mend our ways and get thingsmoving in the right direction.

In search of ways out of this mess, the Ars Electronica 2010 turns to thepioneers of our age, the artists, designers, engineers and scientists, whobring creativity and idealism to bear in their work on an alternative future.

    Repair Rethink Reinvent

Inherent in a repair is a high degree of innovative power since, because itsa sustainable concept, which is displaying respect and appreciation for thethings around us. This is a source of powerful creative and economic forcesand last but not least repair is a skill that makes a bit more independent.

Do it yourself Repair it yourself!

Repairthe readiness and the capacity to repair things is an alternativemodel to the still prevalent concept of primarily growth-based progress

    Repair = Regeneration

Repair also means making amends and healing, taking matters into ourown hands and believing in our capacity to develop in a positive direction. Those who repair have a future.

    A festival as factory

The opportunity to use the whole area of the former tobacco factory will

make the site itself a determinative programmatic element of the 2010Festival. A process, in which art and science, design and engineering canencounter each other on an equal footing.

The grounds of what used to be Linzs tobacco processing plant will be theextraordinary featured venue of this years Ars Electronica Festival. TheTabakfabriks history goes back to 1850, when the Austrian State TobaccoCompany began producing cigars and pipe & chewing tobacco here. Theplant was expanded in stages and production stepped up over the years.

The workforce grew rapidly; over 1,000 people (mostly women) were alreadyworking here by 1855. From 1930 to 1935, architects Peter Behrens (German)and Alexander Popp (Austrian) expanded the plant complexincludingthe erection of Austrias first major steel-frame construction edificeandthereby created one of the most rigorously designed industrial facilities everproduced by International Modernism. The Tabakfabrik is now protected asa historic landmark.

After all, you dont believe that someone whos ordered a motor dismantlesand inspects it. Not even an engineer does that. Experts too make purchaseson the basis of the products outward appearance. The motor has to looklike a birthday present. In the Commemorative Volume Published on theOccasion of the Opening of Tabakfabrik Linzs New Production Facilities,Peter Behrens quotes the technical director of AEG to underscore his ownview that his industrial architecture displays both functional and aestheticexcellence. The new plant went into operation on November 11, 1935.

Production ceased in September 2009. The City of Linz then acquired theentire complex from Japan Tobacco International/Austria Tabak for approxi-mately 20.4 million euros. A corporation was then set up to develop andoperate the facility, and Linzs Johannes Kepler University was commissionedto carry out a preliminary study assessing the various options for the plantsfuture use.

Atmospheric tours through the festival grounds take advantage of thetwilight and ensuing darkness. Flashlights diffusing beams blur the bordersbetween staged performance and architecture, whereby the bizarre interplayof forms opens up unusual architectural insights and a personal form ofinteraction within novel settings. The wide-ranging relevance of the repair theme motivated us to stressdiversity in our efforts to mediate audience encounters with content at thisyears festival. These are matters of concern to all of us, including peoplewho have immigrated to Linz. The core of the Communityparcours conceptis to offer guided tours conducted in languages other than German. Thismultilingual approach applies first and foremost to cultural access to worksof art and best practice examples having to do with the repair theme. The aim is to bring in mediators who are also opinion leaders in variousethnic communities as a means of reaching out to people from differentbackgrounds and thereby making this festival as accessible as possibleto them as well. After all, this is a wake-up calland a message of hopetoodirected at everybody.

Women whove immigrated to Linz lead tours through the inner city andoffer an insiders look at the setting of their everyday life. A striking featureof the neighborhood surrounding Wiener Strae is the high proportion of

immigrants living there. New stores and community centers are openingtheir doors, but most native-born Linzers only become aware of thesedevelopments from afar, as passers-by with no direct multicultural contactto whats transpiring. The CULTURE PILOTS impart insights into the lives ofimmigrants. These unconventional city tours for locals and tourists providea setting for up-close-and-personal encounters with people, circumstances, origins, causes and concrete facts.

Frozen Music is the title of the event that kicks off this years Ars Elec-tronica Festival and also marks the official reopening of Linzs Tabakfabrik. This venue, a former tobacco processing plant thats been closed sinceSeptember 2009, is one of Austrias most significant industrial landmarks.

Artistic interventions, performances and sound & light shows staged in thefacilitys inner courtyard will throw open imaginary doors and windows, andtransport audience members deeper and deeper insideinto a world in whichproductivity is seemingly paralyzed but can still be perceived with all thesenses.

    berdasProgrammheft/About This Program

The 2010 Ars Electronica Festival program is divided thematically into sevenchapters. This is designed to provide a user-friendly means of navigatingamong the many speeches, exhibitions and events weve got lined up, andto enable you to customize an itinerary that takes you right to the content

youre interested in. To get a quick overview, check out the listing by formatson the pages at the very beginning. In the back of the book, theres the usualchronological overview of the entire program as well as a map of the festivalgrounds.

Repair the EnvironmentGreen technologies, eMobility and sustainability are our key conceptsif were to avert disaster on this planetif its not already too late, the

distinct impression you get from works by people like Chris Jordan andCornelia Hesse-Honegger.

Design for RepairDesign instead of mass-produced merchandise; do-it-yourself insteadof buying off-the-rack. Artists show how to breathe new life into oldstuff. Inventors tread new paths to make our ecological footprint assmall as possible.

New Work FactoryFree spaces in which creativity can flourish and theres latitude forpersonal developmentthats the aim of the New Work Factory. Its corevalues are independence, freedom and being part of a community. Buthow can we approach this utopia?

Repair Our SocietyOpen source activists and free media freaks, amateur choruses and film-makerstheyre all doing their part on behalf of a more equitable society.

Overtures ZeitRumeIn times of catastrophe, is optimism even an option? Or is this simply aquestion of the right point of view?

Repair YourselfThe encounter with your own body is the subject of this chapter. After all:if youre out to save the world, sometimes you have to start small.

Future FactoryThe Futurelab, Ars Electronicas R&D division, peers far into the future. How will robots impact our society? What effects will the increasingproliferation of technology have on all aspects of life?

Since 1968, scientist-artist Cornelia Hesse-Honegger has been paintingpictures of flies and other bugs that have mutated as a result of environ-mental contamination and atomic radiation. Since the Chernobyl meltdownin 1986, she has collected more than 16,000 insects in the fallout zones of

Chernobyl and nuclear facilities in Europe and the US. Her studies show thatthese plants severely harm the environment. The highest rate of contami-nation is 22% in the area of La Hague, France; the expected value should beapproximately 1%.

Plastic Planet Once you have seen this film, you will never again drinkfrom a plastic bottle. Plastic is cheap and practical. Plastics in the soilor water take up to 500 years to break down. The exotic additives theycontain damage our endocrine system. Director Werner Bootes investiga-tive documentary film shows that plastic has become a global threat. Were

Chris Jordan looks critically at the dark side of our global mass productionand consumption society. It is hard to communicate the environmentalimpact our way of life has on the planet, because most phenomena areinvisible and spread across the earth in millions of separate places. There isno Mount Everest of waste that we can make a pilgrimage to and beholdthe sobering aggregate of our discarded stuff, seeing and feeling it viscerallywith our senses. His work Gyre depicts 2.4 million pieces of plastic, equal tothe estimated number of pounds of plastic pollution that enter the worldsoceans every hour. All of the plastic in his image was collected from thePacific Ocean.

Now, in more than 20 countries, the use of plastic bags is subject to strictregulations and even fines. Three films impressively demonstrate why thisis so.

There are a few achievements of our high-tech civilization that clearly standout because life without them no longer seems conceivable, because theyvebecome high-profile symbols of human progress, or because theyre now apart of our culture and our life that we take completely for granted. Severalare now teetering on the brink of obliviontheyre threatened with extinction, with becoming nothing more than cases of interest to historians andcurators. Humankinds incessant drive for development and innovation hasnot stopped short of annihilating even these icons.

The plastic bag, the TV picture tube, the internal combustion engine andthe incandescent light bulb face an uncertain end. This cycle of projectscommemorates them.

Japanese experimental artist Ei Wada breathes new life into old TV picture

tubes. He utilizes their electromagnetic properties to transform light intosound and back again. When he touches the screens, this triggers a fasci-nating audio & video performance in which his hands and his whole bodyserve as pseudo-antennas. The old-fashioned picture tube TVs and a videorecorder become percussion instruments, light synthesizer and VJ/DJ equip-ment all rolled into one. Thus, devices that have lost their original functioncan be used in a new way.

It utilizes a new construction material based on theprinciple bees use to build their hives: strips of paper soaked in resin arecompressed into a honeycomb form and then bonded together into panels. The quantity of material required to build a small house corresponds to theamount of cellulose yielded by a single tree. A house can be erected withouta crane in one day and is totally weatherproof. The Mobile 1 Atelier is alsothe starting point of Electrical Walks Linz (see page 51).

The task: creating exhibition architecture to be used only for a nine-dayfestival. The big question: Doesnt repairing the world call for an aestheticparadigm shift too? The simple answer: the papplab principle. To makeexhibition architecture, fold cardboard (Papp in German) cartons and addadhesive tape. A product that, in the world of commerce, is merely packag-ing and thus of secondary importance becomes a key material servingcountless functions: walls, tables, benches and chill-out zones. Folks, werenot just talking about paper cups and plates here; the whole damn hospital-ity establishment is being constructed of these materialsover 2 acresof cardboard and miles of adhesive tape. The aim: building in a way thatis inexpensive, environmentally friendly, experimental and light. And in thespirit of audience participation, installation visitors are invited to build theirown repair tools either in a workshop or simply as an act of ad lib creativity.

After the cost of energy had made global shipping of raw materials andpackaged goods unimaginable, only the rich could afford traditional, mass-produced commodities. Synthetic biology enabled us to harness our naturalenvironment for the production of things. Coded into the DNA of a plant, product parts grow within the supporting system of the plants structure. When fully developed, they are stripped like a walnut from its shell or cornfrom its husk, ready for assembly. Shops have evolved into factory farms aslicensed products are grown where sold. Large items take time to grow andare more expensive while small ones are more affordable. The postal servicedelivers lightweight seed-packets for domestic manufacturers.

The product shown here is the Herbicide Sprayer, an essential commodity usedto protect delicate engineered horticultural machines from older nature.

The Ocean of Light project explores the creative and immersive possibilitiesof light-based visualization in physical space. It uses hardware to createdynamic, interactive and three-dimensional sculptures from light. Surface,

the first artwork to be exhibited using the Ocean of Light hardware, is aresponsive virtual eco-system that occupies physical space. This space isdominated by a virtual surface, the boundary between two fluid virtualmaterials. These are affected by sound, nearby noise creates waves thatripple across the surface, but can also trigger luminous blasts. The result isan interconnected environment, overlapping physical and virtual spaces thatcoexist and are aware of each other.

Future hopes on a number of different levels are pinned on so-called greentechnologies: on one hand, they could help reduce the rapidly increasingglobal demand for energy, or even offer alternatives to finite resources likeoil and coal; on the other hand, as highly committed politicians and youngstart-up entrepreneurs have long insisted, they could be a driving forcebehind the revival of our sputtering economy. In this spirit, Ars Electronica isstaging a Repair Fair to spotlight a small selection of outstanding ideas, concepts and best-practice models that point the way to a brighter future.Visitors can take an up-close-and-personal look at green transportationwhen they take one of a whole fleet of electrical vehicles out for a spin onthe E-Mobility Parcours. Additional informational material will be availableon site and in the Infolounge.
