She will be your principal lecturer and tour guide, along with Carlos Dell Acqua. 4:00 p.m. Depart by coach to the Serralves Foundation, Porto´s leading contemporary art institution. Introductory talk on the city of Porto on the way. www.serralves.pt. Welcome refreshments at the Serralves Terrace Café. The building was designed by 1992 Pritzker Prize recipient Alvaro Siza Veira. Welcome by director Suzanne Cotter and by our lecturer Matilde Seabra. Visit the temporary exhibitions followed by a stroll through the magnificent sculpture park with works by Claes Oldenburg, Dan Graham, Richard Serra, among other artists. We will also visit the Serralves Art Deco Villa that was owned by the Counts of Visela. 6:30 p.m. Depart for architecture tour on the way to our welcome dinner at Boa Nova Casa do Cha Restaurant, one of Alvaro Siza’s most emblematic locations. 1. TUESDAY MAY 22: PORTO

Morning arrival at the Hotel Vinci Porto. Check-in for 3 nights and receive Welcome Packet.

4:00 p.m. Depart by coach to the Serralves Foundation, Porto´s leading contemporary art

2. WEDNESDAY MAY 23: PORTO- BRAGA-PORTO (National Holiday)

9:30 a.m. Depart the hotel by bus.

Visit the Church of Carmo, famous Century Lello Bookshop, Torre des Clerigos, and the 19th

century Train Station of São Bento with its beautiful tiles, Cathedral (Sé), and Church of Saint

Frances.

After a morning coffee we will depart at noon by coach to the nearby town of Braga to the

private home and gallery of Mario and Paola Sequeira for lunch.

After lunch we will visit their art gallery, sculpture garden and restored guest farmhouse, and

view works by Anselm Keifer, Richard Long, Julian Opie. www.mariosequeira.com

Before we return to Porto, we will stroll through the old town of Braga, we will enjoy a short

organ concert at the Cathedral and stop for coffee at the famous Art Decó A Brasileira café.

6:00 p.m. Return to Porto.

8:00 p.m. Dinner at the hotel.

3. THURSDAY MAY 24: PORTO. 9:30 a.m. Depart for a special architectural tour of the Casa da Musica (Music House) by Dutch

architect Rem Koolhas. The Casa da Musica is piece of sculpture in itself it was of the most

interesting new building in town. www.casadamusica.com

11:30 a.m. Departure. Visit Sandeman winery, one of the most emblematic wineries in Porto.

1:30 p.m. Board a Rabelo boat, a typical boat from the Porto wine region which brings the

wine barrels down the Duoro river to the Porto wineries from the vineyards. Lunch on board

with Fado.

3:00 p.m. Optional visit to the jewelry designer Rosarinho Cruz and a walk through the old

silver shops of Porto. Free time for shopping.

Return to the hotel.

7:30 p.m. Depart for a cocktail-dinatoire at a private home with an art collection.

9:30 p.m. Return to the hotel.

4. FRIDAY MAY 25: PORTO- CALDAS DA RANHA- SINTRA- CASCAIS-

LISBON. 7:00 a.m. Luggage will be collected in rooms. Check-out of the hotel.

8:00 a.m. Depart by coach to the pottery of Caldas da Ranha.

10:00 a.m. Visit the Bordalo Pinheiro pottery workshop. Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro was one of

the most influential people of 19th century Portuguese culture, with a remarkable production

particularly in the areas of humoristic drawing, caricature and ceramic creation. In 1884

Bordallo began his ceramics production at the Fábrica de Faianças in Caldas, revealing pieces

of great technical, artistic and creative quality. He produced azulejos (blue tiles), panels, pots,

table centerpieces, vase busts, fountain basins, pitchers, plates, perfume bottles, vases and

gigantic animals, and more.

His remarkable work with ceramics was awarded the gold medal in international exhibitions

(Madrid, Antwerp, Paris and St. Louis, United States).

11:30 a.m. We continue to the romantic hill town of Sintra. Its surrounding landscape has

attracted kings, nobles, writers and artists since the 19th Century. Its palaces and villas are

unique.

1:00 p.m. Arrival in Sintra. Lunch at the Quinta de San Sebastian, the private home of the

Countess of Asseca. We will be welcomed by her son Sebastian Taborda. The house has a

magnificent 18th century fresco painted dining room by French artist and traveller Jean-

Baptiste Pillement (Lyon, 1728 – 1808).

4:00 p.m. Drive to Cascais. Visit the Paula Rego Museum: Casas das Historias in a spectacular

building by Portuguese architect Eduardo Soto de Moura. www.casadashistoriaspaularego.com

6:00 p.m. Drive to the beautiful city of Lisbon, located on several hills overlooking the silver

Tagus River. Its buildings are painted with an exquisite color palette of pinks, blue and greens,

with painted tiles decorating palaces and churches. Great museums and foundations, together

with good restaurants. Its contemporary art scene has become very lively in the last several

years.

7:00 p.m. Check into the Four Season Ritz Lisboa hotel for 3 nights. The hotel has a lovely

indoor pool. Dinner in a typical Portuguese restaurant.

5. SATURDAY MAY 26: LISBON. 10:00 a.m. Depart by coach for a special visit to MAAT, Lisbon´s new Museum of Art,

Architecture and Technology. Located at the Tajo Power Station, the new building by English

architect Amanda Levete. www.maat.pt

12:00 p.m. Visit the Monastery of Jeronimos, the jewel of Manueline architecture.

1:30 pm. Lunch at Darwin Restaurant located in the impressive building of the Champalimaud

foundation premises, and the new place in town with excellent food and views of the Tagus. www.darwincafe.com

CCB: Centro Cultural de Belem Darwin Restaurant & Café.

3:30 p.m. Drive to the Principe Real quarter famous for its antiques and fashion designers.

Free time for shopping.

Optional antique and design shopping where we also will visit the famous ceramic store of

Vista Alegre.

Free time in the evening. In the information packet, you will find shopping tips and

restaurants.

6. SUNDAY MAY 27: LISBON. 9:45 a.m. Depart by coach. Visit the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation donated to Portugal by

the Armenian businessman and philanthropist. It houses a fine collection that ranges from

Ancient Art, Izsnik tiles and Persian carpets to top French furniture and silver. Its painting

collection has masterpieces by top European artists from the Renaissance to Impressionism. A

special highlight is its Lalique collection. Temporary exhibition to be announced.

12:00 p.m. Continue to the Tile Museum, located in the Convent of Madre de Deus.

Visit the highlights of the Tile Museum.

1:30 p.m. Lunch at the museum.

3:00 p.m. Return to the hotel.

7:30 p.m. Depart by coach for dinner and Fado performance at El Clube do Fado in the Alfama

Quarter.

10:00 p.m. Return by taxis.

7. MONDAY MAY 28: LISBON.

9:45 a.m. Departure on foot to Novo Banco Art Collection, the most important photography

collection in Portugal. Welcome by director Alexandra Conde. www.iaccca.com/collection-

11:00 a.m. Continue by coach to the Cathedral (Sé) and walk up to the Ricardo Espiritu Santo

Foundation, where all the Portuguese arts and crafts traditions are preserved and continue to

be made. We will visit its workshops on bookbinding, furniture making, tussles, gold leaf,

1:30 p.m. Light lunch at the foundation followed by a visit to a palace that boasts a beautiful

collection of Portuguese decorative arts.

4:00 p.m. Return to the Ritz.

6:00 p.m. Depart by coach to the Palace of the Marquis of Fronteira. Its extraordinary gardens

and tiles make it one of Portugal´s jewels and best preserved landmarks. Visit the garden and

palace followed by our farewell dinner.

9:30 p.m. Return to the hotel by coach.

8. TUESDAY MAY 29: LISBON-USA.
