What interested you in teaching Continuing Education at MCAD?I taught for many years in the art and design

academy in Israel and I find it interesting to

work with people who are not necessarily

art and design students or even creative

practitioners in the conventional sense. I

also appreciate MCAD’s link to Mia and the

opportunity to design courses with such a

great resource at hand. Tell us about your personal studio practice and how it impacts your teaching.Currently my practice is an observation

and animation of my family photo archive,

focusing on the textiles. Motivated by

the desire to retain the link to the people

appearing in the photographs, while

recognizing the precariousness of memory,

I merge performance, video, and creative

writing, along with mass-produced familial

and found bed linens, and World War II

family stories from USSR. The work offers a

soft and haunting pattern of remembrance,

desire, devotion, and disenchantment.

As an artist and researcher I look at the

significance of textiles in everyday life, as

signs of collective culture of living, and as

carriers of collective and personal memories.

When I teach pattern and surface design

I try to develop this perspective with the

students, reaching beyond the techniques

and technologies into wider cultural

contexts in order to make meaning.

Where do you go for inspiration? I read a lot, historical research on textiles

and material culture as well as literature

in general. Contemporary theatre and

performance are important reading

currently. Revolutionary Soviet art, design,

and poetry are always there for me, as is

Jewish material culture. I love museums.

What is your favorite technique to explore in your studio practice?I don’t really have a favorite technique,

rather I change media depending on where

research and intuition are leading me in the

search for the textile memory. Currently

performance, video/animation, and writing

are the main tools.

What is the most rewarding aspect of teaching for you? Talking with students, seeing if my ideas

were or were not relevant for the class, but

mainly being in a reciprocal productive

situation. If you could give your students just one piece of advice, what would it be? Pursue your intuitions and do your research.

They will converge. Where else can we find your work?https://www.oicherman.art/
