15. Diapason, 2014 This Nicolas Alquin sculpture features old oak with burned patina and lime. Diapason was exhibited by Guy Pieters Gallery, Knokke le Zoute, Belgium (June 2014). Alquin was born in Brussels in 1958 and now lives and works in Bagneux, France.

Born into a family of artists, Nicolas Alquin studied the restoration of artworks in the Musée des Arts et Tradi-tions populaires, and later works in the studios of sculp-tors Reinhoud d’Haese and Etienne-Martin. He has since developed his own artistic lexicon, using two main mate-rials: wood (direct cut technique) and beeswax (cut and shaped directly from the mass and often cast in bronze).

From the very start, Nicolas Alquin has worked in wood. His favored material is oak, after immersion in water, ridding itself of tannin. He has always been committed to driftwood, with its ruggedness, its density, and its almost everlasting hardness, which has become a long-term ac-complice, a “substantial ally.”

Being a sculptor, he builds up this story in large primitive forms that reinvent the past and link to our own present day. The tall sculptures, carved out of the oaken heart, overtake the space and assume unknown roles and vol-umes. Alquin deliberately carves out deep cutouts with determined, symmetrical outlines, restrainedly violent. There are unexpected shapes wrought by the sculptor’s own hand, providing them with a new singular power.

Currently available at Maeght GalleryCompliments of Nicolas AlquinValue: $19,600

6. Rebecca Warren, Totem (e.), 2008Handmade in clay, cast in bronze, and subsequently painted with pastel shades of blue, pink, and yellow, Rebecca Warren’s Totem (e.) alludes to a body suspended in space, recalling the thin, elon-gated figural sculptures of 20th-century artist Alberto Giacometti. Like much of Warren’s work, Totem (e.) straddles the line between disparate and seemingly contradictory ideas, holding itself ten-tatively between figuration and abstraction, assembly and break-down, seriousness and humor. While Warren’s adoption of bronze is a recent development in her practice, her desire to reinterpret and reinvigorate sculptural conventions in material, style, and sub-ject matter is a thread that runs throughout her career.

Rebecca Warren: The Main Feeling, a solo exhibition of the artist’s work, is currently on view at the DMA through July 17, 2016.
