The Big Draw
The Big Draw is a national event organised by
the Campaign for Drawing which has one aim: to
get everyone drawing! why? Drawing helps us
to think, invent and communicate – regardless of
age or ability – drawing is a basic human skill
useful in all walks of life.
arTscape is an exciting Big Draw event for the
whole family to have fun in interactive
workshops led by a sculptor and an architect.
we will be nest building and sculpting temporal
tepees by weaving with found materials in the
gardens, and experimenting with stencils,
collage and frottage to create giant elevations of
the house.
Tickets £5.00 includes one child with
accompanying adult (aged18+). £2.50 per
additional child or accompanying adult.
NB: as these workshops will largely take place
outdoors – please dress according to the
weather (alternative, indoor workshops will be

LIGHThouse
These workshops celebrate the cultural
connections between the two festivals of Light
and Shade – Diwali and Halloween, which take
place during the month of October. Participants
will explore these contrasting traditions in a fun
filled workshop where they will be able to design
and make their own, original Lumière Lantern.

arThouse arThouse courses are
designed to develop the
creativity, skills and interests of
young people aged 5-15 years
in a variety of art, design and
architecture themed
workshops. The courses are
age specific and will include
activities such as drawing and
painting, printmaking, model
making and sculpture, fashion/
textile, product and jewellery
design.
Participants will be encouraged
to experiment with lots of
different materials and ideas in
these fun and friendly courses.
Class sizes are small to ensure
plenty of one-to-one guidance
and stimulate group learning.
arThouse will initially run as
six week tasters during the
autumn 2011 term, and will be
extended to run as ten week
courses in the winter, spring
and autumn terms of 2012.

Welcome…To House for an Art Lover’s Hallo newsletter, a quarterly journal to keep you up to date with what’s happening at the House.
This season, we are delighted to announce the launch of ARTscape, an autumn arts festival for all, which features talks, masterclasses and courses led by some of Scotland’s leading contemporary artists, designers and architects.
Many events are related to the Art Lovers Gallery programme, providing informal opportunities for children, young people and adults to engage with arts professionals in our purpose built studio workshops and seminar rooms.
As the principal objectives of the House for an Art Lover Charitable Trust are to stimulate public interest, knowledge and participation in the arts, our arts activities are run on a not-for-profit basis.

PiCTUriNg PLaCeS: eight view Points
A group show of eight painters curated by ronald F Smith

ronald F Smith was awarded the
haL Paisley art institute prize in
2010 and chose to curate a group
show of work by contemporary
artists whom he admired. The
artists ronald selected to show
alongside him are all
well-established, successful and
respected painters, including
george Birrell, James Cosgrove,
alexandra gardener, James
McNaught, gordon Mitchell,
robert D Murray and glen
Scouller. The core theme that
underpins this exhibition is sea
and landscape, which enables
differences or similarities within
the group to be observed and
interpreted.
An exhibition of recent work by Patricia Cain Patricia Cain is a glasgow-based artist with a
practice that encompasses drawing, painting,
sculpture and public art. Over the past 10 years she
has been concerned with aspects of the city’s
deconstruction, construction and regeneration.
The riveted eye is an exhibition of work that Patricia
created in response to the construction of Zaha
hadid’s riverside Museum in glasgow.
Join Patricia for an informal talk about her
experience as the unofficial artist-in-residence during
the construction of riverside and her work for her
highly acclaimed recent exhibition, Drawing on
riverside at Kelvingrove art gallery, now on show in
The riveted eye exhibition. This talk should be of
specific interest to S5/S6 pupils and students
studying art & Design, art educators, artists and
curators.

Join our expert painting tutor on one of our new, regular Sunday afternoon courses in drawing and painting. These will initially run as six week taster courses during the autumn 2011 term, and will be extended to ten week programmes in the winter, spring and autumn terms of 2012.

Photoforestif you go down to the woods today... you can join the artist Kenny
Bean in this fun-filled, interactive workshop that explores the woods
surrounding the house by using light-boxes to photograph images
of the incredible, magnified patterns that can be found on the trunks,
boughs and branches of different trees. you will be able to print
your photographic images on the spot using mini printers and
we’ll finish the day with a special projection of everyone’s
work back at the house.
8-12years Tickets £3.00
NB: as this workshop will largely take place outdoors – please dress
according to the weather (all photographic equipment is waterproof so
a little rain/drizzle will only enhance the fun! however an alternative,
indoor workshop will be run if the weather is bad)
Sunday 6 November – 11 December 12.00 – 14.00
iNTrODUCTiON TO DrawiNg & PaiNTiNg
This course will help you develop fundamental skills
in drawing and painting, such as line, scale and
proportion – as well as how to create shade and
tone. you will learn how to mix colour and use
different media such as watercolour, oil and acrylic to
create still life, landscape and portraits. To assist your
understanding, the working practices of leading
C19th & C20th artists will be introduced.

Sunday 6 November – 11 December 14.30 – 16.30
iNTerMeDiaTe DrawiNg & PaiNTiNg
This course is designed to develop the skills and
techniques of those with some previous experience
of drawing and painting. with the support of your
tutor – you will be encouraged to explore more
advanced methods of creating work in areas you
find interesting – both in terms of media and genre.
This will be underpinned by directed studies of
relevant artists/art movements.
Adults (16+) Course Fee £60 (includes all materials/equipment)
Courses for art Lovers Masterclass with artist Alexandra Gardner alexandra gardner studied at glasgow School of
art before lecturing there from 1968 - 1989. She
has been the recipient of many awards, including
the Lauder award by the glasgow Society of
women artists and the Travelling award to italy
from the Scottish arts Council. Sandie’s work has
been extensively exhibited at home and abroad,
and is held in many corporate/private collections.
This masterclass is directly related to Sandie’s work
in the Picturing Places: eight view Points exhibition
and will demonstrate how she creates a landscape
painting from scratch using the medium of oil on
canvas. This demonstration should be of particular
interest to artists who are keen to develop their
practice and will inspire you to consider a variety
of new techniques and processes.

MOKU haNga Japanese woodblock Printing
Masterclass with artsist elspeth lamb Join one of Scotland’s leading contemporary artists,
elspeth Lamb for a weekend masterclass that is suitable
for everyone from complete beginners to those with some
experience of painting/ printmaking as it will introduce the
Moku hanga process on a step-by-step basis.
Moku hanga is the Japanese method of printing blocks
with water-based pigments and is known especially for its
intense use of colour, one of the beauties of this technique
is that it requires no solvents or printing press and can be
set up in the smallest studio.
elspeth studied Moku hanga under master carver printers
in Japan and has recently curated an exhibition of Moku
hanga prints for the royal Scottish academy galleries as
part of the in Japan edinburgh Festival exhibition which
runs until 18 September 2011.

LaNDSCaPe PaiNTiNg iN OiLS
Join some of Scotland’s leading contemporary artists, designers, and art historians in a range of thought provoking and stimualting talks which should be of specific interest to S5/S6 pupils and students studying Art & Design, art educators, artists, historians and curators.
adrian wiszniewski‘s work can be found in
major public collections such as M.O.M.a. New
york, Tate, London and Setegaya, Tokyo. During
this talk, adrian will illustrate and explain his
creative process through his exploration of paint,
neon, sculpture and other media over the last
25 years of his artistic career.

roger Billcliffe is a widely
acknowledged authority on
Scottish art. his books include the
standard work on the glasgow
Boys (Frances Lincoln, 2008), The
Scottish Colourists (John Murray,
London, 1989) and several works on
Charles rennie Mackintosh and the
architecture and decorative arts of
glasgow at the turn of the century.
roger‘s lecture will thus consider
the practice of these artists in
relation to the international scene
within the very apt surroundings of
the music room.

gareTh hOSKiNS architecture
gareth hoskins architects have recently completed a
major redevelopment of the National Museum of
Scotland in edinburgh, whilst their ‘grounds for Play’ and
‘glasgow roots’ projects with haL typify the practice’s
approach to making architecture and places that are
rooted in an understanding of a site and how people
experience and interact with it. gareth’s talk will look at the
design ideas and process that shape both these and other
work by the practice
