TVCC BizCenter business spotlight

Wayne and Holly Stepleton, owners, take great pride in getting a job done and doing it right. Wayne’s 14 years of experience as an electrician provide a strong foundation, which he combines with his meticulous nature when it comes to his work. Wayne started in the electrician field with a great apprenticeship program from TVCC and work with a prior employer. In November 2011, Stepleton Electric LLC was launched. Its jobs range from commercial to residential (new construction and remodels) to agricultural jobs. The company provides services to a wide area of eastern Oregon, which means some pretty remote job locations have been part of the mix. Plans are in the works to expand Stepleton Electric’s service area to Idaho, which should happen soon. Wayne Stepleton says that a lot of their jobs are agriculture related. Their customer list also includes agencies such as the BLM. Starting their own business moved Holly Stepleton into the role of handling billing, bookkeeping, human resources, and other administrative jobs. When the idea of starting their own business was

still being

formulated, the Stepletons saw information about the BizCenter in the TVCC catalog.

Thinking it could be a valuable asset, they met with Debi DeBord, then a BizCenter Advisor, and are glad they did. They said the BizCenter has been a helpful resource. Not only did it provide them with business information and guidance, but it proved to be a motivating source as well. The BizCenter was a place they could get feedback as well as discuss and voice what advantages business ownership could provide; it helped them decide whether business ownership was the direction they wanted to go. Now, as they move forward in their business, the BizCenter still supports them in an advisory and educational role. In addition to the one-on-one advisory sessions, the Stepletons have also taken some of the workshops, such as the QuickBooks class. Holly said, “Being able to call Michael [Braden] (business advisor) or come over to the BizCenter is great. You get local support and assistance, not some far-off contact in a call center.” The Stepletons grew up in the community and want to remain part of it. “We are here for the long run,” Holly comments. “We are doing what we plan to do for the rest of our careers.” They are members of the Vale Chamber of Commerce, Vale rodeo board, and PTO. They appreciate the small business owners of the area and do their best to support, encourage, and network with them. Family, strong work ethic, and good values are extremely important to Holly and Wayne. Holly says one of the big goals of running their own business will be to instill these same values in their children. Although the children are still too young to do much work for the company, Holly hopes that the hard work she and Wayne are putting in will set a good example for the children. She adds that another lesson business ownership will show is that “if you want work, you may have to make it yourself.” Wayne Stepleton holds himself and his company up to high standards and expectations, which has led to a loyal clientele. The Stepletons say they are very appreciative of these customers and the referrals they provide, and the Stepletons are glad to be able to do quality work for them.
