o One of the most popular imports was the Japanese woodblock print called the Ukiyo-e or “pictures of the floating world”

o Took an art course at the École Nationale de Dessin

o 1859 to 1866, he was trained in lithography in London, England

Lithography

o (from Greek λίθος - lithos, 'stone' + γράφω - graphο, 'to write') is a method for printing using a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a completely smooth surface.

o the positive part of an image is a hydrophobic, or "water hating" substance, while the negative image would be hydrophilic or "water loving”
