On Thursday 7th January part of the newly formed Paddock Wood U3A QuizTeam attended our first event at The Elm Tree for a Quiz and Curry Night. We are pleased to report that after a recount we came a very close second

with 42 out of 50 points while the winners scored 42.5 points.

All the questions were relating to the year 2015 which still proved testing onoccasions with our collective memories.

However a great evening, good fun, great venue and good food and we lookforward to the next one. Anyone who wishes to join our Paddock Wood U3AQuiz Team please e‐mail Linda Stedman on [email protected]

and you will be added to our list.

Seminar NewsMarch Fully Booked

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

To all Members of the Welcome Committee and their helpers, theteam taking subscriptions and bookings for Seminars, with a special

thanks to the sterling efforts from Michele. Indeed they were sobusy that I know many never got the chance to look around – we are

addressing that for next year.

All the Groups who put on some fantastic and spectacular displays. And not least all members who attended, with a warm welcome tothe many new people who joined us. Finally to Linda Steadman and

her group of organisers – who despite the odd panic on the waycreated a great event.

The place was buzzing, excitement in the air, so much to see, somuch to do, so many surprises, people to meet, chatting, laughing,

asking questions. And the tables – what a show! Too many tomention but what a fantastic Dolls House, Amazing Automaton,

Superb Crochet work, Dazzling Bling on the Jewellery table, SuperbPaintings and Photographs, Display of musical instruments, Beautiful

work from the Sewing Group, New London Walks – and one groupeven had time for a game of cards (oh that was the Bridge Group).

At the end lists had been filled in, names had been collected andthere was a great feeling of elation and a job well done. What agreat 2016 we have to look forward to – well done everybody.

“You’ve all done very well”.

January Open Day

We desperately need somewhere secure to store equipment, particularly ourPublic Address system, laptop, projector and screen. If you have somewhere

suitable ‐ perhaps a box room – that would be incredibly helpful. And youwould automatically become a member of the VIVVA team!

And talking of the Volunteers in Various Valuable Activities team, we needpeople to be able to operate the Public Address system – since I will not be

able to get to all the monthly meetings this year. If you are interested couldyou be at the hall at 1pm on February 11th as I am demonstrating how to set

up the system for another U3A. See Fred or call on 01892 833 413.

Do you have space to spare?

E-Mail from the Prostrate Cancer Charity

What a great result for all the effort put in by so many!

NEXT MONTHLY MEETING Thursday 11 February at 2pm

"Industrial Archaeology in Kent" with Speaker James Preston

Since Cranbrook U3A started recentlytwo more U3As have been started inKent, at Meopham and Faversham.

So if you know people in those areas letthem know!

At a recent U3A Group Leaders’ conference there was a session coveringSupporting Self Organised Learning (SSOL) – part of Community Learning &

Skills ‐ a division of Kent Adult Education.

SSOL offers groups like our U3A specialised courses and free one‐off seminarson a very wide range of subjects. This interested Dave Thompson who leadsour Family History Group One and he arranged a one‐off 2 hour seminar on a

specialised section of the investigation of family history.

The venue was the Tonbridge Adult Education Centre, and was attended byseven group members. Run by Naomi Dickins a noted local archivist, subjectscovered were Parish records ‐ which are a very important element once you

get beyond the year 1801‐ the year of the first national census – and theinvestigation of Military Records. If any other group is interested in

investigating courses run by SSOL do please contact Linda Stedmam, theGroup Co‐ordinator for Paddock Wood U3A.

SSOL is it for your group?

An Art Seminar, an exciting addition to our 2016 Programme. Our PW U3A ArtAppreciation and Practical Art Groups have joined forces to stage this event.

Run by Billy Showell ‐ a well respected contemporary local artist whosewatercolours have earned her respect world wide. She will demonstrate and

talking about her art on 31st May in the morning (during school half termweek). Billy, who specialises in painting flowers and other flora, will be

painting a picture especially for you.

To enhance the experience we will be looking over her shoulder with a closedcircuit camera. Images will be projected onto two large screens so we can

appreciate the painting as it takes place. Billy will wear a lightweightmicrophone and will describe what she is doing as painting progresses.

Billy will also tell us about her past work and other facts of interest – such aswhere her commissions come from, and where she teaches. One particularnewsworthy item is that she has been chosen by the Society of Botanical

Artists (SBA) to provide the painting to be used on the catalogue front coverfor the SBA show, which takes place in April this year.

It is quite an honour to be acknowledged by her peers in this way.

Our own Nigel Pye has agreed to oversee the technical side of the seminar. We feel the seminar will have wide appeal and be a very attractive event for

non‐artists among our U3A membership.

Bookings will be taken at the U3A meeting on Thursday 11th February.

News of our May Seminar

And in case you were wondering, the two beautiful flowerpaintings on the front cover are by Billy.
