Introduction

Art Xcess Library (AXL) at School is an innovation project to develop literacy at school. The original idea of Art Xcess Library (AXL) was inspired from Little Tiny Free Library (LTFL) from an estate in Wisconsin, USA. AXL project gave a new dimension to the literacy development at our school. AXL were not just as an attraction to the school community. Hence, it has also become a benchmark to other school in running the same project at their respective school. The study begins when the frequency of pupils visiting the school library is very less. This is because of the time factor and also the logistic problem which the library is located at level four compared to the classrooms that located in level one, two and three. In addition, the canteen is located at the ground floor which separated from the main building. So, it is in need for us to think of an innovation on how we can make the library accessible by the pupils in easier and relaxing way.

By this AXL project, what to be proved here is to make pupils easier to read anywhere around the school itself. This is also to promote reading culture among pupils and also to improve the pupil's reading records under a NILAM programme where pupils will be rewarded for the highest record in their reading. Due to that, the success in pupils will be based on the pupil’s literacy development either in short or long terms. Purpose of the study We do see AXL as one of the trigger in the innovation of literacy and library development. The literacy level at our school were unsatisfactory. The study began when we the problem in logistic where the school library or resources centre was hard to be access by the pupils. The library was located at 4th floor. The logistic problem make the

pupils find it hard to access the library more often. In the school library management system, each classes will be given a specific timetable to enter the library during the teaching and learning session of Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Inggeris subject once a week by rotation. During this time, pupils go on with NILAM programme by fully utillize the time to read various tyoes of books such as fictions, non-fictions, encyclopedias, and so on. Their reading were recorded in the NILAM book. Hence, the pupils have chances to access the library formally at least once a week while the other time are aternatives for them to enter the librar either on recess or after school. Table 1 Week cycle in the usage of library for NILAM

Week T&L session for NILAM Week 1 Malay Language (Bahasa Malaysia) Week 2 English Language (Bahasa Inggeris) Week 3 Malay Language (Bahasa Malaysia) Week 4 English Language (Bahasa Inggeris)

On part of that, during the recess time, the location of the canteen and the library

was too far and unrealistically for the pupils to access the library during that time because of the distace and situated at the 4th floor itself. However, we did not take into consideration on dicipline and how to control the pupils movements and safety especially for year 1-3 pupils. Thus, the dicipline committe had controlled the movement of the puils during the recess time while after school, pupils are busy to go back because the bus are waiting and their parents are waiting. Table 2 2014 Graf before innovation

The percentage was not statisfy based on the record in NILAM book. This can be

seen in the achievement of the pupils based on the NILAM award.Based on our observation and analysis, this project has increased the pupils interest in reading and the pupils themselves have use their free time wisely by making the AXL as a destination to get the reading materials. Campaigns to attract the pupils in reading were conducted to increase the reading interest among the pupils such as 100 Books AXL@LTFL, ’Take a Book Return a Book’, Spot Badge, Book Worlds Day, Kem Membaca 1 Malaysia ( 1 Malaysia Reading Camp) , AXL Week and AXL Ambassador. The campaigns were a success because it is able to increase the reading interest among the pupils. Also the leadership skill had increased among the school librarian since they were given responsibility to take care of their own AXL and by becoming the AXL ambassador in order to encourage their friends to access and use AXL around the school wisely. Conclusion Art Xcess Library (AXL) at School is not just to give a new face to the library

itself and to the reading culture but it is also an alternative way to help in increasing the literacy level among pupils in teaching and learning in the classroom. In addition, pupil’s interest in reading has increased and they were able to use their free time wisely by making AXL as a destination to get the reading materials. With cooperation through CSR Programme, communities, parents and school community, together we have made this innovation as a medium in producing holistic pupils in the future.

An effective Innovative not just to help students mastering the phonetic vowel but also to improve student social skills with peers, repects and affection to others. All of all, it does help in what you want to achieve especially in pupils reading records and reading rates.
