The purpose of this Practice Test is to prepare students for taking theOtis-Lennon School Ability Test®, Eighth Edition, (OLSAT® 8), so that theywill be familiar with the types of questions that appear on the test. They will learn to follow a row across the page from left to right, tomark their answers properly, and to change their answers whennecessary. For those teachers who want to provide their students withpractice in the mechanics of coding identifying information, namegrids are included.

The Practice Test is not scored. Therefore, students should be givenas much help as they need to complete the questions successfully. For most effective use, the Practice Test should be administeredapproximately one week before the regular test administration. Youshould become thoroughly familiar with these directions beforeadministering the Practice Test. For your convenience, correctresponses to the questions are printed on page 12.

Write each student’s name on a Practice Test booklet, if desired, beforePractice Test administration begins.

Specific Directions for Administering

To administer the Practice Test, read the directions next to the wordSay in the margin. Instructions to you are printed in regular type andshould not be read to the students.

SAY Today we are going to do some interesting activities that arelike puzzles.

I am going to give each of you a booklet. Leave your bookletclosed until I tell you what to do.

Distribute the Practice Test booklets, with the front covers facing up.Be sure each student gets a booklet, a pencil, and an eraser.

Note: If you plan to fill in all of the identification information for thestudents on the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test booklet, begin reading atthe asterisk on page 5.

If you want your students to practice filling in a name grid,

SAY Turn your booklet over. On the back cover, you see a box thatsays “Name Grid.” Be sure that your name grid is turned sothat you can read the words in the boxes.

Find the section labeled “Last Name.” In the white boxes, carefully print your last name, putting just one letter of yourlast name in each box. If your name does not fit, write asmany letters of it as there are boxes. Are there any questions?

Answer students’ questions. When students have finished printing their lastnames,

SAY Beneath each box in which you wrote a letter of your lastname, fill in the circle that has the same letter. For eachbox you left empty, fill in the empty circle at the top of thecolumn. For example, if your last name were Lee, you wouldfill in circle “L” in the first column, circle “E” in the secondcolumn, circle “E” in the third column, and the empty circleat the top of each of the other columns. Does everyoneunderstand what to do?

Answer students’ questions. Then, after students have finished,

SAY In the section labeled “First Name,” print your first name inthe boxes, just as you did for your last name. If your namedoes not fit, write as many letters of it as you can.

After students have finished,

SAY Now, beneath each box in which you wrote a letter of yourfirst name, fill in the circle that has the same letter as youwrote in the box. For each box in which you did not write aletter, fill in the empty circle at the top of the column.

After students have finished,

SAY In the column labeled “MI,” write the first letter of yourmiddle name. Then fill in the circle with the same letter. Ifyou do not have a middle name, fill in the empty circle at thetop of the column.

Give help as needed. When everyone has finished,

SAY We are finished filling in the name grid. Turn your bookletback over so that you are looking at the front cover.

Practice in codingidentifying informationcan be helpful to students.

Now begin the Practice Test.

*SAY We are going to work some problems now. You will probablyfind them to be interesting and unusual, like puzzles. Youwill mark your answers in your booklets. We will discuss eachproblem as we go along, so that you will understand howthey all work.

Open your booklet to page 3.

Walk around the room to make sure that all students have opened theirbooklets correctly and have page 3 showing.

SAY

1 Find the group of pictures at the top of the page by thenumber 1. When pictures go across the page like this, wesay they are in a row.

Demonstrate by moving your finger across the page from left to right.

SAY In this row, you see some pictures of children doing differentthings. One of these pictures does not belong because it isnot like the others. Can you tell me which one of thesepictures is different from the others?

Pause for replies.

SAY Yes, the fourth picture, the one of the children playing withthe wagon, is different from the others, isn’t it? All of theother pictures show two children who are both riding onthings, but the fourth picture is the only one that showssomething different. In the fourth picture, only one of thechildren is riding.

Now I will show you how to mark your answer. Do you seethe little circles under the pictures? We call these answerspaces. Since the fourth picture does not belong with theother pictures in this row, you will fill in the space underthe fourth picture. This is how you mark.

Show students how to mark the answer space by drawing an answer circleon the chalkboard and filling it in. Students need not keep their markscompletely within the answer circles, and all the space within the circlesdoes not have to be filled in. Show students how to erase an answer theymight want to change. After you begin to administer the test, move quietlyaround the room to make sure that the directions are being followedcorrectly.

Many students benefitfrom being shown how tomark an answer space.

SAY

2 Now look at question 2. In this row, you see some groups ofshapes. One of these groups of shapes does not belong withthe others. Which group of shapes does not belong?

Pause for replies.

SAY Yes, that’s right. The second group of shapes does not belongwith the others. This group is different from the othersbecause it is the only group where the two shapes that arealike are white and the single shape is dark. In the othergroups of shapes, the two shapes that are alike are dark andthe single shape is white. Mark the answer space under thesecond group of shapes. Is there anybody who does notunderstand?

Answer the students’ questions. Walk around the room and make sure thestudents are filling in the answer space correctly. Then go on to question 3.

SAY

3 Now look at question 3. In this row, you see some animals. One of these animals does not belong with the others. Markthe space under the animal that is different from the others.

Pause.

SAY Which space did you mark?

Pause for replies.

SAY You should have marked the space under the bird. A bird hastwo legs. All the other animals in this row have four legs. Doyou understand why the bird is the right answer?

Answer any questions, making sure that everyone understands question 3.Then go on to question 4.

SAY

4 Now look at question 4. In this row, you see some groups ofletters. Mark the space under the group of letters that doesnot belong with the others.

Pause.

SAY Which space did you mark?

Pause for replies.

Careful explanations helpstudents to understandwhy wrong answers arewrong.

SAY Yes, the third group of letters is different, isn’t it? Let’s seewhy. All the other groups of letters follow the same pattern. A letter has been skipped between the first and secondletters, and again, between the second and third letters. Butin the third group of letters, “QRS,” the pattern has not beenfollowed because letters have not been skipped. Doeseverybody understand?

Answer all questions.

SAY If you marked a different answer, erase your mark and thenmark the space under the third group of letters.

Pause to give students time to erase and mark their answers correctly.

SAY Now turn the page.

Demonstrate.

SAY

5 Look at question 5. In the first box on top, there is a pictureof a woman working in her garden. In the box next to it, yousee some corn. In the first box at the bottom, there is apicture of a man working in the kitchen. He is puttingsomething in the oven. The box next to this picture is empty. Now look at the row of pictures next to the boxes and thinkabout what should be in the empty box. Which picture goeswith the man putting something in the oven in the same waythat the corn goes with the woman working in her garden?Mark the space under your answer.

Pause.

SAY Which space did you mark?

Pause for replies.

SAY The pie is the correct answer, isn’t it? The pie goes with theman putting something in the oven in the same way that thecorn goes with the woman using a hoe. The man bakes a piejust like the woman plants corn. Do you understand why thepie is the correct answer?

Be sure that everyone understands question 5. Repeat the explanation, ifnecessary. Then go on to question 6.

Each format change in thetest is explained carefullyto students.

The Practice Test allowsunlimited time for makingsure students understandthe process.

SAY

6 Now look at question 6. Look at the shapes in the two boxeson top. The shape in the first box is a dark circle that isbetween two white triangles. The shape in the next box isa white circle that is between two dark triangles. Also, theshape has been turned on its side. The shapes in these twoboxes go together in a certain way. Think about how theseshapes go together. Now look at the first box on the bottom. Here you see a dark diamond that is between two whiterectangles. Think about what should be in the empty box.Find your answer in the row next to the boxes and markunder it.

Pause.

SAY Did you find the answer?

Pause for replies.

SAY You should have marked the space under the last answer. Thelast answer, the white diamond between two dark rectangles,is the right one because it goes with the shapes in the firstbox on the bottom in the same way that the shapes in theboxes on top go together. The shapes switch colors from boxto box, and they turn on their side. Do you understand whythe last answer is the correct one?

Answer students’ questions. Repeat the explanation, if necessary.

SAY If you marked the space under a different answer, erase yourmark and mark under the last answer.

Pause for students to erase and mark their answers correctly. Then go onto question 7.

SAY

7 Now look at question 7. Look at the pictures in the twoboxes on top. These pictures go together in a certain way.Now look at the picture in the first box on the bottom.Think about what should be in the empty box. Then findyour answer and mark under it.

Pause.

SAY You should have marked the space under the second picture, the one of the two children drinking from milk cartons. Thispicture goes with the picture of the two milk cartons in thesame way that the picture of the children sitting in chairsgoes with the chairs. Does everybody understand why thesecond picture is the correct answer?

Students are encouragedto become comfortablewith erasing answers andchanging them.

Answer all questions. Then go on to question 8.

SAY

8 Now look at question 8. Look at the shapes in the two boxeson top. These shapes go together in a certain way. Now lookat the first box on the bottom. Think about what should be inthe empty box. Then find your answer in the row next to theboxes and mark under it.

Pause.

SAY You should have marked the space under the third answer, the triangle with the hexagon inside of it. Let’s see why. Lookagain at the boxes on top. In the first box, there is a largesquare with three small circles inside of it. In the next box,the circle is large and has one small square inside of it. Seehow the shapes change sizes and places from box to box, buthow, in the second box, there is only one small shape insteadof three. The third answer belongs in the empty box becausethe large triangle with the small hexagon inside of it goeswith the large hexagon with the three triangles inside of itin the same way that the shapes in the boxes on top gotogether. Does everyone understand why the third answeris the correct one?

Answer any questions the students may have. Repeat the explanation,if necessary.

SAY Now go to the top of the next page, page 5.

9 Look at question 9. Listen carefully. Mark the space under theanswer that shows this: A dark circle is inside a square that isabove a triangle.

Pause.

SAY Which space did you mark?

Pause for replies.

SAY Yes, you should have marked the space under the lastanswer. It is the only one that shows exactly what I said.If you marked under a different answer, erase your markand mark under the last answer. Are there any questionsabout what we just did?

Answer all questions. Then go on to question 10.

All of the skills assessed inOLSAT are included in thePractice Test.

SAY

10 Look at question 10. The picture at the beginning of the rowshows some children lined up. Mark under the picture thatshows how the children would look if the tallest child stoodin the middle of the line, and the two shortest children stoodon either end of the line.

Pause.

SAY You should have marked under the second picture. In thispicture, the tallest child is standing in the middle of theline, and the two shortest children are standing on the endsof the line. Remember to listen carefully, so you will hearexactly what I say. Does everybody understand why thesecond picture is the correct answer?

Answer any questions the students may have. Then go on to question 11.

SAY

11 Now go to question 11. Look at the pictures in the boxes atthe beginning of the row. These pictures go together in acertain way. Something belongs in the empty box. Let’s figureout together what belongs in that box. What is happeningfrom box to box to box?

Pause for replies.

SAY Yes, as you move from box to box, a line has been takenaway from the circle. In the first box, the circle has eightsmall lines around it. In the second box, one line has beentaken away from the top left of the circle. In the next box, another line has been taken away, this time from the bottomright. In the next box, the line that has been taken away isfrom the top right of the circle. What belongs in the emptybox?

Pause for replies.

SAY The next line taken away from the circle should be takenfrom the bottom left side. The lines taken away follow apattern of top to bottom, top to bottom, starting with thetop left and ending with the bottom left. You should markthe space under the first picture because it is the one thatbelongs in the empty box.

Pause.

SAY Does everybody understand what we just did?

Answer any questions. Then go on to question 12.

Engaging art makes thetesting process less of achore for students.

The Practice Test includesquestions at all difficultylevels, so that studentslearn what to expect onthe real test.

11

SAY

12 Now go to question 12. The shapes in the box go togetherin a certain way. Look at the shapes across each row. Findthe pattern that makes the shapes change. Somethingbelongs in the empty space in the bottom row. In the row ofshapes next to the box, mark under the shape that belongsin the empty space.

Pause.

SAY Did you find the answer?

Pause for replies.

SAY You should have marked the space under the third shape.Let’s see why. Look at the first row of shapes. See how theshape turns clockwise as you move across the row and howit changes color, from dark to white to dark again? In thesecond row, the clockwise pattern continues, but this time, the shape goes from white to dark to white again. In thethird row, the shape that belongs in the empty space shouldfollow the same clockwise direction and color patterns thatyou see in the first two rows. This is why the third shape isthe right answer. The third shape follows the clockwisepattern, and it is dark. Do you understand why the thirdshape is the answer?

Answer all questions. Repeat the explanation, if necessary.

SAY If you marked the space under a different answer, erase yourmark and mark under the third shape.

Pause for students to erase and mark their answers correctly.

SAY That is all we will do now. Put your pencil down. In a fewdays, we will be doing some more problems like these. They will seem familiar to you, because you will rememberhow they work. Close your booklet so that the front coveris on top.

Collect the test booklets. This concludes the Practice Test.
