This article talks all about when the Europe and Natives make contact after Columbus

There were many positive and negative results of these meetings

Your job was to record as many as you could while reading…fill in or add on to your chart was we go

Native American Benefits… New livestock-

sheep's, cows, pigs, chicken

Horse is introduced- used for hunting, improved transportation

Clothing changes- new weaving and dying techniques. New jobs for weaving and textile production

New plants- wheat, barley, citrus, bananas, improve diet, better farming techniques

New Technology- knives, guns, axe heads, traps,

Wealth, some tribes involved in the fur trade gain money

PLOW- improved hunting skills, farming building

Native American Drawbacks… DISEASE- 50-90% of the

population is killed by diseases such as small pox, black death, diptheria, measles, etc. Natives had NO immunity to them

Slavery- worked in mines or on farms, worked to death

Lost wealth- cities looted, destroyed, wealth stolen from them

Forest/crops cut down destroyed

Massacred/killed in warfare for territory

Land was taken/stolen from them

Forced to convert to Christianity or face death

Forced to stop practicing their culture, convert to more European style of life

24 million Natives out of 25 million are killed from disease, warfare, and slavery

PLEASE NOTE: For Natives the DRAWBACKS were

much worse the Benefits They lost way more than they gained

in the contact between the two groups

Natives would have been much better off if the Europeans had never come to the new world

Contact mostly NOT GOOD!!!

European Benefits… New crops and foods-

sugar, tobacco, corn, potatoes, turkey, beans, squash, buffalo meat, cocoa, etc…

New foods to eat and sell Lots of money to be

made from the new crops

FUR TRADE- LOTS OF WEALTH!!!

New sources of money, wealth including silver, gold, crops, etc…

1000’s of new medicines from plants, some yet to be discovered

New healing knowledge gained from natives

New lands to live on, farm. Europe is overcrowded and new area to send people to

New source of labor- they force the natives to work on farms and mines

New materials for clothing including cotton

European Drawbacks… Some risk in exploring,

sailors and explorers died from long journey

Some diseases from the natives but not very deadly

New land required slaves so they had to get them and control them somehow

Never find a Northwest passage to Asia

Slaves were dying very quickly, had to keep finding more slaves

Many Europeans gained nothing from explorers

Competition between European groups will lead to warfare

Please note…

Europeans gained a plethora of new things from exploration

Their drawbacks were minor compared to the Natives

Exploration was very profitable and beneficial to the Europeans

THEY GOT THE BETTER END OF THE DEAL
