OPENING WORDS: Father V

We are well into summer and this year we have been reminded of the devastation that comes from forest fires.

As I write, the Soberanes fire, off of Highway One, has been raging for days – over 20,000 acres of devastation; still only 15% contained. It is only when a tragedy occurs that we are

reminded of our mild and beautiful climate that we so enjoy and the bounty of our abundant crops.

We are so used to good weather and bountiful harvests that we take them for granted. Just think of what happens year after year in other parts of our country and around the world. So let us raise our prayers for the families that lost homes and loved ones. And let us pray that their distress be mitigated by caring neighbors and the community.

And as we recover from the labors of so many during the 59th Antiques & Collectibles Show that just ended, I want to once again extend my heartfelt thanks to the Steering Committee and its many, many Sub-Chairs, for their splendid task. Three cheers to all of you – you know who you are.

Of course, life moves on and so must we! As summer ends and schools restart, congregations get rolling with projects and events. The Choir gets back after Labor Day; Homecoming Sunday is scheduled for September 11th; and Godly Play restarts on September 18th. You will also be hearing about our Stewardship Campaign in the coming weeks. And St. Mary’s

Guild is planning their “Taste of St. Mary’s,” to be held in October. Fall is always a busy month in our congregations. Why should St. Mary’s be any different!

Be well; be blessed; and let us give God the glory.

Serving you in Christ,

Vincent + Interim Rector

Have you noticed the beautiful wooden cross

at the back of the church?

Inquiring minds have led us to memories held by Dwight

Edwards and Wilfred (Bill) Scholefield, supported by dates

found on photos posted in Clay Hall.

Evidently, The Rev. HMM Nicholas, who served at St. Mary’s

by-the-Sea from September 1963 through September 1972,

obtained the cross to lead the children’s procession into church.

What a beautiful legacy!

Father Nick’s tenure overlapped that of The Rev. Harry Buck,

who was Rector from 1958 to 1968, and then he served with

The Rev. Allan Wolter, Rector from November 1968 through

August 1972.

Father Nick’s journey to St. Mary’s and beyond is enriching to

learn about. “Nick” was a graduate of Yale, with a degree in

Music; he played the violin. After a time he went to work for an

airline in Rome. Following that, he returned to the United States

and attended The General Theological Seminary. At the time of

his ordination, he was in London and was ordained by the

Bishop of London, in St. Paul's Cathedral.

When Father Nick returned to the U.S., he was part of the

Diocese of Massachusetts and was Rector of St. Mary's of the Harbor, at the tip of Cape

Cod. It was during this time that he met Dorothy Lord and they were married in

Boston. They came to Carmel about 1964, and Nick served as the Associate Rector at

All Saints. About 1965, he became the Assistant at St. Mary's with The Rev. Harvey

Buck. He was the Chaplain at Canterbury Woods and was responsible for building the

Prince of Peace Chapel. Father Nick died in September 1972.

The wooden cross is a beloved and historic gift to the children of St. Mary’s by-the-Sea,

and to the entire parish for generations to come.

With gratitude to Celeste Ventura, Dwight Edwards, and Wilfred Scholefield

Thinking backwards to all the good we

have accomplished individually and

working in community, and forwards to a

full-on stewardship campaign, led me to a

search on “bible quotes about supporting

each other.” And thus, to this verse.

I found myself thinking about the power of expressing gratitude personally, one fellow

traveler to another, one worker in the vineyard to a fellow toiler. Being “mentioned in

dispatches” (archaic phrasing), or in some form of social media (hopefully not “SO

2015”), meets some people’s needs, and certainly puts the message out about living our

faith.

But consider the impact of smiling at a fellow parishioner and thanking him or her for

something specific that they have done to support and further some ministry. We have so

many opportunities to connect in this manner: during the Peace, at coffee, in a pause

during a work session--whenever we gather together. The Divine in all of us inspires us

to do good because it is the right thing to do; but we are reminded that the human part of

our nature is inspired by gratitude and recognition as well.

In the past, a very moving and effective part of our stewardship campaign was the testi-

monies given by members of our Saint Mary’s family about the meaning our parish gave

to their lives. I experienced and heard many others describe how these heartfelt messag-

es brought refreshment to their souls. I made a point of sharing with those speakers who

especially moved me how their words had influenced my faith journey.

So listen with an open heart to your fellow parishioners. Connect with someone if his or

her words touched a place in your heart or soul. And if you are so moved, volunteer to

share your story, either face-to-face or during that part of our upcoming Time-Talent-

Treasure stewardship initiative.

We all have daily opportunities to recognize and inspire each other. Let us seek them out,

as we walk our individual and collective faith paths.

Blessings,

Monica

Storm Drain and Sanitary Sewer Improvements: Greenwood Park CDS Unit

As you may have noticed, the area on Central Avenue in front of St. Mary’s, above Greenwood Park, has been under construction for the past two weeks. The City of Pacific Grove Public Works Department has informed us that this is due to the installation of a “CDS Unit” for Greenwood Park; a stormwater treatment device. The project

will take approximately one month to complete. The construction work hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Central Avenue will be closed between 12th Street and 13th Street for the duration of the work period and a 24-hour detour will be in place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the City of Pacific Grove Public Works Superintendent, Daniel Gho, at 831-648-5722.

The 59th St. Mary’s Antiques & Collectibles Show

It’s a Wrap!

The steering committee is happy to report a very successful completion of the 59th annual St. Mary’s Antiques & Collectibles Show. Our wish was to bring the show forward from a number of years of declining dealer participation and put our show in a better position to be successful in the future.

As my team discovered, the show has at least two major components: the commercial “dealer” component and the absolutely vital “parish” component. We worked all year as a team to bring the dealers in and convince them that we could deliver a more commercially successful show. I’m happy to say that I think we did that.

Initial figures show that we doubled our attendance, which was one of our primary goals. The “parish” component, the heart and soul of the show, was nothing less than the miracle that it always seems to be. Once again we all rose to the occasion, opened our arms to strangers and old friends alike, and made 2016 a year to be lovingly remembered.

Our thanks to all of you who gracefully accepted the changes we made and gently offered your advice. We are listening and planning a few small improvements for the future; in growth there is health…

What’s Next From The St. Mary’s Guild?

It was 130 years ago that seven stalwart and determined women founded St. Mary’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church right here in Pacific Grove and created St. Mary’s Guild. Through the decades the women and men of the Guild have provided much pleasure along with a dedication to help others. For years The Guild has held a Holiday Bazaar and offered the proceeds to the various charities right here on the Peninsula, starting with St. Mary’s own needs. First and foremost has been to offer a substantial amount to the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. In the past, choir robes were provided.

Now the Guild has decided on something new!

A collection of recipes from parishioners to be ready next year for 2017’s Antiques and Collectibles Show. All of your recipes whether appetizers, entrees, desserts or novelties are welcome. Send your recipes to Breanna in the church office: [email protected]

An Update from Your Rector Search Committee

To assist us in identifying and prioritizing our core values and naming the qualities we seek in our next Rector, your Search Committee is in the early stages

of organizing a series of “Listening and Conversation” events. These will most likely occur in September. All parishioners will have an opportunity to participate and have their voices heard.

To allow the fullest participation, there will be gatherings, maybe one large and a few smaller ones, at St. Mary’s and one at Canterbury Woods (we hope). For more structured input, as opposed to conceptual synergy that arises from healthy conversations, there will be a survey. You will be able to complete the survey, either on paper or online. Everyone will be invited and encouraged to participate! By mid to late August, you will begin to see and hear the details and times of the various events, via service bulletins and announcements, Times & Tides, and/or email.

Your time and effort will help the Search Committee and the Vestry discern who would be best suited and gifted to become the next Rector for our wonderful community.

Unexpected Gifts

Gifts sometimes come from unexpected people. For no reason other than a kind heart and generous spirit, a wonderful present is delivered. St. Mary’s received just such a gift the week before our Antiques Show. This is the story…

In preparation for the Antiques Show, I was wishing for clean windows in Clay Hall. Those of you who had noticed their condition can attest to the fact that it has been decades since they were washed. Some windows literally had streaks of mud on them. After expressing my hope for clean windows to one of our new Antiques

Show dealers, Michele Monello of Acapella Antiques and Vintage Garden, I was told that her fiancé, Troy Simons, owns a window washing business. I called Troy; he came and gave us a very reasonable bid. Sadly, it was more than our budget allowed and I told him we could not afford to have the work done. Troy said he understood and then graciously offered to wash the Clay Hall windows for the budgeted amount.

Whereupon, Troy not only cleaned the interior and exterior windows in Clay Hall, as per our arrangement, he then proceeded to wash all of the windows in Edwards Hall (check out the kitchen windows) and the Church entry! Please pause to enjoy the sparkling windows and join me in giving thanks for Troy’s generosity.
