This instrument was used at the Lake Erie & Northern Railway generator station switchboard in Preston, Ontario. This small interurban electric railway serviced Waterloo-Kitchener, Preston, Brantford, Paris, Port Dover and Hespeler. The line was constructed between 1913-1915 and belonged to Canadian Pacific Electric Lines with headquarters located in Preston, Ontario. It was for freight and for passengers.

Part of the Ontario Hydro Collection. This collection was acquired by the CSTM in 1992. It documents the material culture of the history of electricity and its uses. Before, this instrument belonged to Mr. Heinz Peper, living then in Waterloo, Ontario. (sold to OH in March 1973) Mr. Peper worked in the electricity field, and taught also in this field. He was also an entrepreneur and a volunteer for the Ontario-Hydro Museum project. He sold part of his collection to Ontario Hydro.

Significance to technology:

MAGNETS. The permanent magnets used in all of the direct current instruments are of conventional shape and have been carefully designed to have the proper ratio of length to cross section in terms of the required flux and length of air gap in order to obtain an assembly which will be permanent and unvarying. The magnets are forged from the best of alloy magnet steel, and heat treated with equipment which will produce a uniform product. The pole faces are ground to secure a proper fit to the pole pieces, which are machined from a special grade of soft steel.

RUST-PROOFING. All steel parts in Jewell instruments are thoroughly rust-proofed by means of a coating of metallic cadmium, plated in special tanks, to secure an even depth. Tests have shown that cadmium plating is several times better than any other known method for securing a real rust-resisting surface. It was first used in instruments by the Jewell Electrical Instrument Company and its merits are such that practically every commercial instrument made today is rust-proofed by this method.

Mouvement de type D’Arsonval-aimant permanent et bobine en mouvement : a moving coil swing between first grade sapphires moving in an air gap in which is concentrated a strong magnetic field from a permanent magnet. The moving coil is usually wound on an aluminum frame

Direct current instruments are self-contained up to and including 300 volts or 75 amperes, beyond which range external multipliers or shunts are supplied. Alternating current instruments are made internal up to and including 300 volts. Potential transformers are recommended above 750 volts. Ammeters of this type are self-contained up to and including 500 amperes, above which range current transformers must be used, the instrument scales being marked in terms of primary current

This company was founded in 1899 and it seems it was bought by Weston Electrical Instruments Corp. in 1928.
