I am pleased to share with you several exciting new things happening at The Museum.

We are partnering with the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) as their pilot Texas museum for a new and innovative “Friends” program. In 2012, the  DMA introduced Friends as an initiative to increase opportunities for engagement in the Museum’s exhibitions and programming. This is one of the most talked about new programs within the national museum community and has garnered much press. For Grace Museum members, Friends promises to enhance your overall Museum experience.

More good news….

The Grace Museum recently became a member of the National Association of Reciprocal Museums (NARM). This allows us to offer to Grace members at the $100 level and above, the opportunity to  visit many museums in Texas and across the

nation for FREE. For more information on this great opportunity and to view a complete list of participating museums, please visit our website.

For our young visitors we have created The Grace  Kids Club! This is designed for children ages 5 to 12. Read on in this issue of Artifacts to learn more about membership and the new Kids Club.

Our exhibitions continue to capture media attention from across the state and draw a growing audience of support. This summer, we will introduce Home on the Range, an exhibition that will focus on the history of Central West Texas. In conjunction with this exhibition, we will offer a wide array of events, classes and programs for all ages. A listing of those opportunities and information on this great exhibit is a part of this issue.

I welcome your input on the journey. Thank you for your partnership.

The 2014 Grace Fall Benefit will honor long-time advocate, Rick Weatherl. Rick serves on the Board of Trustees of The Grace Museum and was the architect for the restoration of The Grace Museum.

The 2014 Grace Fall Benefit will be held on Saturday, August 23. Perinis will again provide a wonderful meal and we have booked The Spazmatics to play in the Courtyard. A jazz band will play inside the Museum. Look for your formal invitation in your mailbox very soon!

A NOTE FROM OUR HONOREE:

The cultural arts, in all their forms, are important to a community. Cultural arts bring an opportunity to us, to our children and to our visitors that when combined with our wonderful historical venues, varied outdoor experiences and recreation; simply offer incredibly comprehensive resources for our community. I’m proud of these diverse opportunities right outside our own front doors.

The Grace Museum and The Old Jail Art Center team up to explore contemporary drawing

Draw In / Draw Out is one exhibition in two locations co-curated with one purpose, to bring together artwork by artists who challenge traditional concepts of drawing in a variety of ways to reinvigorate image making and representation.

Over the last decade, drawing has become a standalone medium and like other art media in this age of cultural and technological flux and innovation, the revised definition is often pushed to the limit. The artists I asked to exhibit their work at The Grace Museum fit the category of extreme drawing by propelling the innate qualities of pencil and paper into the third dimension and conceptual forms laden with fragmented narratives and visual intrigue.

If drawing is the new painting, as the artists participating in Drawn In / Drawn Out attest, then drawing direct, theoretical and experimental by nature continues to lend itself readily to conceptual and experimental interpretation for new concepts to emerge and change.

Black / Whitemasters of the darkroom

J U D Y T E D F O R D D E AT O N , C H I E F C U R AT O R

If film is to survive into the digital era, it is likely that it will do so in its most original form, black-and-white and be utilized solely as an artist’s medium. Black and white photography’s original intent as a copying device has arrived in the 21st century as a novel instrument for personal artistic expression. In the 21st century, most of film’s applications have been usurped by faster, cheaper, and more flexible digital technologies. One of the last remaining markets for film is one that embraces its very limitations: artists.

As recreational and commercial photography embrace the speed, color and computer manipulation of digital photography, the otherworldly beauty of traditional black and white photography is being embraced as artistic practice for personal expression. A blend of the high-tech digital negative with low-tech dark room practice also affords new ground for artistic experimentation.

Drawing on photography from The Grace Museum’s Alice and Bill Wright Photography Collection, black and white photographs are presented to examine the unique qualities of film photography and dark room process that have catapulted traditional black and white photography practice into the arena of 21st century fine art practice. Works by masters of the dark room, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Fritz Henle, Robert Frank, Arthur Rothstein, Sebastião Salgado, George Tice, John Sexton, Lewis Hine and many others provide a first-hand examination of the nuanced surfaces and subtle tonal shifts of the time consuming art of film photography.

Youth Art MonthThe month of March celebrates the talent of student artists from Abilene and the surrounding area. The exhibition featured more than 800 original pieces of art on the second floor of The Grace. Youth Art Month has been celebrated nationwide every March since 1961, and was created in order to express support for art educators and to emphasize the importance of quality art programs in schools. This year’s exhibition at The Grace was on view February 27 to March 26, 2014. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped us hang the artwork in time for the opening reception on February 27! We could not have finished without their contributions. Thank you to the students and teachers who contributed to this year’s exhibition.

Young MastersThe Grace Museum, in collaboration with the Abilene Education Foundation (AEF) and Abilene ISD, is featuring an exhibition of young master artists from April 3–19, 2014. These Advanced Placement students have been selected through a juried process, and were honored at the opening reception on April 3. Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, three Merit winners, and Honorable Mentions were announced then. Best of Show and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will receive college scholarships. The Young Masters exhibition seeks to inspire not only the winners, but all AP art students to reach their full potential as artists, and celebrates the dedication of their art teachers for demonstrating excellence in art education. The project is organized by the Abilene Education Foundation and has been supported by a grant from the HeArts for the Arts program of the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council and the City of Abilene. Sponsors include: Future Fund of the Community Foundation of Abilene, Abilene Independent School District, Melody Hunt, Kaye Price-Hawkins/Priceless Literacy, Abilene Frame-N-Art Shoppe, Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union, and Judy Godfrey.

Summer of 2014 at The Grace Museum is a celebration of the art and history of Central West Texas, an often mislabeled 200,000+ square mile area of the Lone Star State. The region’s 22 sparsely populated counties share 19th and early 20th century history as an important concourse for indigenous people, buffalo herds, cavalry campaigns, trail drives, railway expansion and artists as well as later settlement by ranchers, farmers and merchants. Artwork by important artists who documented early impressions of the area, historic photographs, oral histories and rarely-seen artifacts from private and public collections reveal a cherished historical link to the past that still exists in the area. Abilene’s annual Western Heritage Ranch Classic will kick off this celebration of the history of Central West Texas on May 8th with the Western Heritage Parade in Downtown Abilene. Experience authentic Central West Texas through special events, camps, classes and programs throughout the summer.

Home on the RangeWhere the Prairie Meets the Plains in Central West Texas

Art and history collections continue to grow in scope and quality thanks to the generosity artists, art collectors and friends of The Grace.

Important Grace Museum art exhibitions prompted the addition of three major works of art to the collection. Photographer Arthur Meyerson donated his iconic photograph, Toothpick, Texas, 1988, and artist Ken Dixon gave his mixed media composition Not So Still Life, 2007, to the permanent collection. Loren Mozley’s 1956 watercolor, Trees on Pedernales is now part of The Grace collection through donations from Harry M. Jones, Jr., Russell Tether of Russell Tether Fine Art, Howard Hallam, President of Ben E. Keith Co., the late Peggy Frary and the estate of Michael Frary, and museum designated acquisition funds.

Alice and Bill Wright continue to add to our fine art photography collection with donations of Bank Langmore’s Riders in the Fog, c. 1970, Byron Brauchli’s Tala 2, Municipio de Villa Aldama, 1993/1996, and the iconic photogaph, Marines of the 28th Regiment of the 5th Division raise the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, February 23, 1945 by Joe Rosenthal.

New artifacts for the history collection include gifts from local families and history enthusiasts. Marian Rowe donated her mother’s 1950s gingham dress and sisters Janet Middleton Swanson and Marsha Middleton Murray donated childhood portraits painted at the old Drake Hotel and vintage clothing from the Middleton and Munger estates. Historic photographs of the 1911 members of Abilene Knights of Pythias Lodge given by Julianne Stephen and of the 158 B-Company Infantry at Camp Barkeley in 1941 given by Billy Libby were also received. Museum purchases included personal items of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Jones Sr.

GRACEfriendsThe Grace Museum, in collaboration with the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA), will debut the Friends program in May. In 2012, the Friends program began as an effort from the DMA to redesign the basic premise of engagement in the Museum. Robert Stein, Deputy Director for the DMA, says, “While the practice of audience engagement in museums has become increasingly sophisticated, the heart of any successful engagement is the individual human connection that can happen in the museum.”

The DMA had the hope to share this program with other partner museums. Helping push this idea forward, the DMA requested funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to pilot the Friends program in other museums. IMLS granted the funding to the DMA and the following partners: Denver Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Minneapolis Institute of the Arts. Although The Grace Museum is not formally in the grant, the DMA and IMLS have recognized The Grace Museum as the first pilot institution for the project.

What is Friends?Visitors join the FREE program using an innovative Web-based platform via iPad kiosks located in the museum’s Historic Lobby. After signing up as a Friend, visitors are presented with a series of possible activities designed by the museum. These activities provide new and fun ways to connect with the museum’s programs and collections. Upon completion, earn the visitor badges. Friends can “check in” to different activities using personalized membership cards at the iPad kiosks or by texting from their mobile phones.

What are badges?Friends focuses on visitor engagement and providing ways for the museum to show appreciation and recognition for visitor effort. Badges allow the museum to show that appreciation through the Friends program. Badges are bundles of activities that give you new ideas about ways to use the museum and are awarded when you participate in activities listed in

the badge descriptions. Badges are both explicit and discovered – visitors are incentivized to undertake particular activities in the museum through a series of obviously earnable badges. For example, with the “Red Carpet” badge, Friends earn points for attend the museum’s Opening Receptions. If Friends attend all three of the museum’s Opening Reception, they earn the “Red Carpet” badge. To add an element of surprise, other badges, which are initially hidden, are awarded as visitors engage in other sets of activities. Badges are earned around a fairly broad range of activities ranging from simple gallery visitation to identifying favorite artworks to creative activities.

What do I earn by joining? As badges are earned, visitors can claim a variety of rewards created by the Grace to say “thank you” for participating with the museum. One of the underlying goals of the program is to create long-term relationships with visitors while offering them value and benefits tailored to their experience and engagement with the museum. This long-term connection and repeat participation is seen as key to establishing relevance of the museum in the lives of visitors.

The Grace Museum is proud to be a partner with the DMA and the Friends program. We invite you to join us as our Friend and to attend our

In last few months we have increased the amount of educational opportunities for adults here at The Grace, and we have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the classes we’ve introduced. In February, we began a class we’re calling Bottles and Brushes, where participants may bring their favorite beverage to enjoy while our instructor takes them step-by-step through a painting. The March class sold out immediately, but don’t worry, if you’re interested, we will be doing an April class as well. It looks like this will be a regularly occurring adult program here at The Grace!

Museum Matters continues to cover a variety of topics. Artist Timothy Harding joined us in February to discuss his influences and his artwork in our current exhibition, Drawn In, Drawn Out. After the talk, attendees participated in a collaborative art project with Tim. March featured Abilene High art instructor April Desai going through drawing techniques with participants. We will continue to feature experts in various subject matters and are hoping to introduce more participatory elements to Museum Matters in the future.

In addition to those, we are gearing up for our blur series of classes. Blur is an opportunity to explore the blurred

line between art and craft. We hope to demonstrate how some projects can fit into both categories.

We’re also starting up basic drawing classes for adults and getting ready for talks, demonstrations, and art classes to go alongside our upcoming exhibition Home on the Range. This summer will have plenty of educational opportunities for adults at The Grace. If you are interested, visit our website at thegracemuseum.org for more information.

It’s not too late to join the fun as the Los Aficionados volunteers and friends venture to the beautiful Dallas Arboretum! The bus trip is an annual event and a major fundraiser benefitting The Grace Museum. All participants will travel to Dallas from Abilene in a luxurious, chartered bus. Refreshments, including wine will be served on the bus along with lots of fun activities.

Your payment of $150 includes transportation, refreshments on the bus and admission to the Arboretum. A portion is tax deductible. Registration ends April 22 or until all the seats are filled and is open to anyone who would like to participate. To register or for more information, please call Gwen Kaiser at 325-701-4298. For volunteer opportunities at The Grace, please call Sarah Tenison at 325-673-4587.
