Supplying downhole tools and services for over 10 years

Caledyne have been developing and supplying downhole tools and services to the oil and gas industry for over ten years. During that period the company have built up an impressive portfolio of clients on a global basis.

One of the product lines that have gained global recognition are the downhole valves with multiple granted patents. The Caledyne developed valve range is extensive and varied in sealing types including ball valves, flapper valves, poppet valves, sliding sleeve valves or a combination of different types. All valves are rigorously tested and qualified to the latest international standard including API 14a for the safety valves and ISO 28781 for the downhole ball valves.

The valves have gained an extensive track record and are utilised in a variety of applications including sand control, completion barrier valves, fluid loss, artificial lift and tubing test or packer setting valves.

ESP Guard

The Caledyne ESP guard is a tubing mounted down-hole tool, which is installed as part of an Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) completion to protect the pump from sand and debris settlement and allows chemicals to be injected above the ESP. The tool incorporates a unique mechanism allowing the tubing string to be tested unlimited times which ensures integrity of the tubing string or to set hydraulic packers. This feature saves both time and costs, eliminating expensive wireline runs. Once a predetermined pressure is applied to the tubing string, the tool shears and the inner sleeve latches into the poppet opening the side ports ensuring backflow is redirected to the annulus. At this stage the tool is fully commissioned to guard the ESP against debris settling.

The tool is a redevelopment and enhancement of the field proven AFV, which has been successfully installed in hundreds of wells worldwide. It uses the annular flow path design from the patented Caledyne Torus Insert Safety Valve for routing fluids through the tool.

The ESP Guard is situated above the ESP with the side ports in the open position and the poppet closed when the pump is off. Any solids exit through the side ports, rather than settle inside the ESP. When the ESP is started the ESP Guard’s annular ports move to the closed position before the poppet opens to avoid shuttling, and an internal flow path opens for produced fluids.

A wireline option is available if access is required below the valve.

PCP Guard

The Caledyne PCP GUARD is a tubing mounted down-hole tool, which is installed as part of a progressing cavity pump (PCP) completion to protect the pump from sand and debris settlement.

The tool is a development of the field proven AFV, which has been successfully installed in hundreds of wells worldwide.

The Valve Chassis is installed on tubing along with the PCP stator.

A Deployment Sub is mounted on the rod string, and locates within the body of the PCP GUARD.

When the rotor is installed, it prevents any solids bypassing from above to below the tool.

The PCP GUARD is situated above the PCP with the side ports in the open position when the pump is off.

Any solids fall through the side ports, rather than on top of the pump.

When the PCP is switched on, the PCP GUARD annular ports move to the closed position and an internal flow path opens for produced fluids.

Valve

The Caledyne Mechanical Isolation Valve is a mechanically actuated bi-directional downhole barrier ball valve, which may be used to isolate the formation during installation of the upper completion or other such operations.

The valve is actuated by a shifting tool, which may be attached to the lower end of a wash string. When the wash string is removed, the valve is then automatically closed. The shifting tool may be re-configured and used to open the valve.

Alternatively, a stinger attached to the upper completion, which opens the valve when the upper completion is installed, may actuate the tool. When the upper completion is removed, the stinger automatically closes the valve as it is being removed.

An equalising feature may be incorporated to ensure pressure is balanced across the ball prior to opening.

The Caledyne ball valves are qualified to ISO28781.

ValveThe Caledyne Fluid Loss Valve is designed as a cost effective solution for ESP completions, to protect the formation when the pump is switched off. Installed below the pump, the FLV is open when the pump is in operation and closes as soon as backflow activates the piloting mechanism. A lock open facility gives the option to carry out operations below the FLV.

Installed in conjunction with ESP completions. When the pump is off, backflow activates the FLV, preventing fluid loss into the formation and loss of fluid in the pump.

Under-balanced drilling. The valve allows the completion to be installed without causing damage to the formation.

Packer setting. The FLV is installed below a hydraulically set sump packer. Pressuring up the tubing against the FLV sets the packer.

The Caledyne Fluid Loss Relief Valve (FLRV) is a fluid loss valve with pump through capability designed to support the hydrostatic column in the tubing string. In the static position, the side ports are normally closed, with the main poppet acting as the fluid loss device.

The tool is configured at the factory to have a “cracking pressure”, which allows fluids to be pumped past the valve through the side ports. By applying a pressure differential across the valve the poppet seats and the side pistons pump open a sleeve, opening the side ports. When injection is stopped, the valve will return to its normal position as a fluid loss device. Static seal friction is utilised to eliminate shuttling.

ValveThe Caledyne Annulus Vent Valve is designed for use with ESP completions, where the AVV is positioned on top of a dual string ESP packer. If there is a build-up of gas below the packer, the AVV is actuated via the control line, opening ports to bleed gas past the packer and into the upper annulus.

The AVV is designed with a large fail safe setting depth, to allow optimum positioning of the packer and ESP within the completion.

Overview

Pressure differential across the packer does not affect the load to move the sleeve, only extra pressure required is to overcome the load on the piston.

TorusThe Caledyne Torus valve is a fail safe closed Insert Safety Valve, which offers a permanent conduit through the centre of the valve. The valve is installed in the safety valve nipple profile and operated by the existing hydraulic control line.

The valve utilises a sliding sleeve mechanism to shut in production operated via a power spring and piston arrangement, akin to industry standard flapper type safety valves.

The lower sub can be configured to fit capillary tube, fibre optic or electrical penetrators or rotary seals for insert PCPs applications, where there is a requirement for a safety barrier.

Tubing mounted versions are also available.

The Torus Valve main body is independently tested to API 14A. Each complete Torus system is thoroughly tested in house to meet specific customer requirements.

Minimal number of pressure seals and hence potential leak paths. There are 3 dynamic seals and 3 static seals in the entire assembly.

The Torus Valve is extremely versatile, by simply changing out the bottom sub it can be utilised for many different applications

Versatility

PCP pumps can be installed in wells requiring safety valves by installing a bottom sub with rotational seals. Utilising the Torus valve allows PCP pumps to offer an artificial lift solution to the offshore market in particular in harsh, sandy, more mature environments.

Utilising the Torus Valve in capillary string applications allows for a permanent or semi-permanent capillary installation through the existing TRSSSV without compromising safety. With check valves in the injection string the Torus system presents a full fail safe closed barrier. Capillary string installations are ideal solutions for deliquification and chemical injection.

Listed below are typical applications whereby the Torus Insert Safety Valve, can enhance production saving both time and money:

Liquid LoadingWatered out gas wells can be brought back to production by injection of a foaming agent through a capillary string. Utilising a Torus valve with a permanent capillary string installation allows wells to be stimulated on a regular basis, reducing the need for intervention work on wells with a high level of water ingress. Should further deliquification be required the Caledyne Balance Pump can be used for the final stages in gas production.

Insert ESPElectrical Submersible Pumps are one of the most effective methods of artificial lift. Utilising the Caledyne Torus valve, ESP’s can be installed in existing wells eliminating expensive workovers while still maintaining full safety valve integrity. The Torus valve can accommodate coil tubing deployed and cable deployed insert ESP systems.

MonitoringBoth semi-permanent and permanent installation of real time data acquisition can be achieved by installation of a gauge or fibre optic cable through the centre of the Torus valve providing operators with valuable downhole well performance information.

Insert Gas LiftEnhancing production through gas lift typically requires installation of gas lift mandrels during the completion installation phase. Insert gas lift at the optimum depth can be achieved through the Torus safety valve with minimal down time thus enhancing production.

BypassPacker

The Caledyne Bypass Packer is a hydraulic set high-pressure single string retrievable packer, which uses an elastomeric packing element to provide a full barrier in the well. The packer is tubing deployed and is set using hydraulic pressure. The Caledyne Bypass packer has 3 cable conduits encapsulated in 3/8” 316L control line which are sealed using metal to metal compression fittings.

The packer is retrieved by straight pull and is of a concentric design eliminating retrieval issues experienced with dual packers.

StingerThe Caledyne Stinger is designed to engage with a shifting profile in a downhole tool. The spring-loaded keys collapse through restrictions and fully expand to engage the relevant profile. Once the tool has been shifted, the keys auto release from the profile. The tool has a shear out facility in the event that the downhole tool cannot be actuated. The large through bore allows for fluid to be circulated through the tool, making it ideal for use on wash strings.

The Bi-Directional Stinger is designed to operate in Otis B style profiles, but keys can be provided for alternate profiles.

A selective keyset can also be used on the tool to engage a single shifting operation.

Overview

Single trip to operate downhole profile.

Emergency shear release in case the tool cannot shift the down-hole tool.

Shear rating can be set in the field up to 40,000lbs, dependant on operation.

The Caledyne High Expansion Shifting Tool (HEST) is an ultra slim shifting tool, which may be used to operate down hole tools having a significantly larger ID than the restriction above. The HEST is run and operated on coil tubing.
