Artist: Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso• He was a Spanish modern artist,
born in 1881
• His father was an artist and at age 7 his father taught him oil painting and figure drawing
• When he was 16 he went to Madrid, Spain to study at Spain’s best art school
• At 19 he moved to Paris. Paris was considered the art capital of Europe at that time
• Throughout his life he created oil paintings, sculptures, drawings, etchings, collages & rugs
• During his life no other artist was as famous as him
• He died in 1973, at 91 years old
• Some of his paintings are among the most expensive in the world
• His work is divided into 4 periods:1. The Blue Period 2. The Rose Period3. The African-Influenced Period4. The Cubism Period

• The Blue Period (1901-1904)– sad looking paintings using blue and
green colors
• The Rose Period (1905-1907)– a happier style with orange and pink
colors
• The African-Influenced Period (1908-1909)– a style influenced by African sculpture
• The Cubism Period (1909-1919)– a style of painting where objects of the
painting subject are broken up and repainted in an abstract form
– he co-founded this style of art with Georges Braque, a French artist

• This famous and well known sculpture is in Daley Plaza in Chicago
• It is 50 feet tall and weighs 162 tons
• Picasso refused to be paid for his work, he wanted to make it a gift
• Notice how the face and body are distorted and dislocated, the basketwork structure connecting the minimal facial contours with huge steel wing like structures for the hair
