Each of you throughout this semester will create a work of art in response to a work made during a cultural/historic period discussed in this course. Your response piece can be made in any medium. For example, your work can be a painting, a drawing, a photograph, a ceramic piece, a sculpture, a digital work, a photographically documented installation, performance, etc. Your response piece should respond visually and/or thematically to the work you chose from the past. Throughout the semester, each of you will individually present to the class both the piece that you made and as well as how your piece relates to a work from the past. You will research the piece to which you are responding and intelligently describe to the class how your piece is responding to this work.

Artists works often respond to art history. This assignment will give you a chance to articulate how your own work conceptually relates to the past. Student Example #1 Presentation by Corinne Gaines

Mudcloth4

Mudcloth, also called bogolanfiniOriginated in central MaliMade by the Bamana tribeDiscovered by a hunters wife

Derivation, language Bamanankan- Bogo meaning mud, lan meaning made with, fini meaning cloth

Central Mali-live east and north of Bamako- capital of Mali

Said to have been discovered by a hunter who ran through a river while chasing an antelope; wife couldnt remove the stain from the mud of the river

Earliest known - 11th century CE5

Mudcloth uses:Worn by hunters as camouflage and ritual protection Ceremonially worn by women

Traditionally in black, white and rust

Women: after initiation into adulthood/genital cutting and after childbirth- cloth is supposed to have the power to absorb bad energy6

The Making of Mudcloth

hand-weaving, sewing, soaking, drying, mudding, drying, rinsing, bleaching

Men

Hand spun cotton is woven into long strips of fabric.Strips of cloth, typically in sets of approximately 7, are sewn together into a panel.

WomenBoil cloth, shrinking in to its final size Dried cloth is soaked in a solution of pounded leaves from the Bogolan tree of Mali. The solution turns the fabric a yellowish color and enables the fabric to absorb the mud dye. (like a primer)(A mixture of iron rich mud and water has been allowed to ferment for as long as a year or until it turns black.) This mud is painted on the cloth in the desired pattern. The mud is applied using sticks, reeds, strips of bamboo, palm fibers brushes, feathers, etc. to only the negative space of the pattern. The dried cloth will again be washed, this time in a different mixture of leaves, grasses and herbs to make sure the mud is bound to the cloth. Sometimes mud will again be applied to the cloth to create darker or more intense colors. The cloth is rinsed a final time in a solution of boiling leaves to further enhance the color. The areas of the fabric where no mud was applied are bleached, leaving the design white to stand out from the mud-dyed areas.

This pattern depicts wealth and luxury. It is said to represent the pillows of wealthy women - don't have to work, just put their heads on pillows.

This represents a bed of bamboo and millet leaves. It is said that this pattern is used by a woman who wishes to show her superiority to a co-wife. However, the pattern is extremely popular, so it is not always assumed that a woman wearing it is making that assumption.

This pattern has a unique story behind it. A farmer had a sickle he particularly liked. It worked well for him and he thought it deserved its own pattern. So this pattern is named the back of the sickles blade.8

The Hunters Belt

An individual wearing cloth of this design is signifying that they are brave and fearless. Warriors wore this when heading off to battle. An individual wearing cloth of this design is signifying that they are brave and fearless. Warriors wore this when heading off to battle.

Audio Dream CatcherBy Hunter Warch

History of dream catchersDream catcher tradition originated with the Ojibwe tribe (Great Lakes)Attributed as a gift of Grandmother SpiderBelieved to ensnare bad dreams during the night, so that only good dreams may enter the sleepers mind Philosophy of this WorkOne of my strangest and fondest memories as a child was going with my dad to visit Otis, an old tribesman, who lived alone in the hills of Pennsylvania. Before we left, Otis always shared stories with me. Once he told me a few of the Ojibwe stories about the dream catchers given by Grandmother Spider. Hearing him tell the story is a memory that I appreciate the older that I get. This musical piece is conceptually inspired by the structure and the mystical purpose of the dream catcher.

In addition to creating your own reflection piece and presenting it to the class, you will turn in a statement (at least one page) describing the relationship between your work and the historic/prehistoric work to which you are responding.

Your statement should include both a researched introduction to the work you are responding to as well as a reflective description of how your work is responding to this piece.

This statement should include at least one non-internet source other than the text for the course. Please cite your sources in MLA or APA format.
