Helping Kendall HealA GiveForward fundraising

campaign for East Hampton local Kendall Bahns is being held. Funds raised will go to support her treatment for her lifelong battle with PTSD,

eating disorders and depression. Bahns now resides in California. The goal is to raise $10,000 to send her to an in-patient program in Torrance, California at Del Amo Hospital. Del Amo Hospital is ranked number one in the country for a PTSD rehabilitation center and is the only one located in California.

The GiveForward website states, “She has secretly, and sometimes publically, battled with PTSD, eating disorders and clinical depression for the entirety of her lifetime. Kendall is now seeking help after acknowledging her struggles, and recent suicide attempts, which resulted in hospitalization. She is currently in dire need of mental help, rehabilitation, medical treatment and support from doctors and loved ones. At this point, it is far beyond what out-patient treatment can accomplish, and we are looking to secure a stay at an in-patient facility.”

To donate visit www.giveforward.com and search Helping Kendall Heal.

Deadline for submissions is Thursday at noon. Email to [email protected].

The

New To TheatersDevil’s Due (R ) You’ve seen this

type of movie before, most noticeably Rosemary’s Baby. A couple has wild sex on their honeymoon and the bride becomes pregnant. But baby growing inside isn’t quite right -- it has horns and a tail. Pretty lame, but what you expect in January?

Coming SoonFreezer (NR ) Then of course,

there are those screenplays that in an attempt to be original are so completely off the wall we wonder how could any studio even considered making them into a movie. Exhibit A: Freezer, wherein a NYC mechanic goes to a party, gets knocked out, and wakes up in the restaurant’s walk-in freezer. Dylan McDermott plays the role as if he was frozen during the filming. Once they bring in the Russian mob and the stolen $8 million it goes from bad to worse. Viewers will likely head out to thaw within a half hour or so.

New On DVDThanks For Sharing An A-rated

cast inexplicably signed on for this Stuart Blumberg film and pay the ultimate price – they watch their careers tank with the film. Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins, and Gwyneth

Paltrow hopefully learned the hard way: just say no.

Now PlayingThe Wolf Of Wall Street (R) Martin

Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio reunite yet again in this black comedy about an over-the-top 1980’s stockbroker who is a forerunner to the wheelers and dealers who caused the financial meltdown two decades later. Apart from being overly long (three hours), this film is brimming with action. It’s a morality tale that is at times riveting, at times hilarious, and often just plain ugly. The guess here is both director and star will receive Oscar nominations, as will Jonah Hill. Also starring Matthew McConaughey and Kyle Chandler.

Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit (PG-13) January is typically a bad month for new releases – any film with even decent reviews is rushed to release before the end of the year to qualify for the Academy Awards and to take advantage of the holiday week box office.

By those standards, this film, starring Tom Clancy’s ever-ready special agent, finds Jack Ryan uncovering an international financial scandal in the wake of 9-11. Chris Pine (Star Trek) stars in the title role – remember when Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise got these roles? The cast is a good one – Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and Davis Paymer co-star – and Pine makes for a passable protagonist. You could do worse on a cold winter’s night.

“Cuchi, Cuchi” she would coo, shaking her ample bosom while doing so. To be sure, Americans have had a long fascination with Baeza, and it wasn’t only for her good looks – she was and is a talented singer/entertainer as well as a trained flamenco guitarist. In fact, as a child growing up in Spain one of her teachers was Andrés Segovia, arguably the best flamenco guitarist of all time.

No one is quite sure how old Baeza is. At one time she claimed

Todays Birthday: María del Rosario Mercedes Pilar Martínez

Molina Baeza, 1951?she was born in 1946, but a court later pegged her birthdate as 1951 – there have been published reports that in fact she was 10 years older, born in 1941.

The reason for the discrepancy was because in 1966 the great bandleader Xavier Cugat hired her. She not only became his protégé, but his lover and wife. Legend has it she claimed to be 21 when they married on August 7 of that year, though she was in fact considerably younger.

Cugat, a classically trained

violinist, was already a world famous act when he met Baeza. His third wife, Abbe Lane, herself a sex siren and accomplished vocalist, fronted his band before a nasty break-up in the early sixties. Looking for a replacement, Cugat discovered Baeza, who, of course, had taken the stage name Charo.

Talented and confidant, Charo revitalized Cugat’s career but soon tired of playing a sideman. She went out on her own, appearing regularly on the TV hit “Laugh-In” and the “Today Show.”

She developed a stage act and was courted by the Las Vegas casinos. By 1971 Charo was earning as much per show as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. She not only sang and danced, but performed on the guitar expertly, winning Guitar Player Magazine’s Readers Poll twice. She didn’t hesitate to use her signature line “Cuchi, Cuchi,” so much so Segovia once cautioned her to stop saying it.

Charo remarried in 1978 and moved to Hawaii, spending the next decade running a dinner theater and performing there with her family.

Charo is s t i l l tour ing and appearing on television – she was recently featured on “Dancing With The Stars.” She is particularly popular in Japan, and speaks fluent Japanese. This Day In History

Ingredients

Tart Crust:¾ c all purpose flour

¾ c ground rolled oats¼ c whole rolled oats

½ c confectioners sugarzest of ½ an orangezest from ½ lemon

½ tsp salt6 oz cold butter (cut into small

cubes)1 tsp vanilla extract

1 egg

Blueberry Filling:8 pts fresh blueberries (washed and

sorted)

Blueberry Tart With Oatmeal Crust

¾ c granulated sugar½ c blue berry jam

2 tsp powdered gelatin (bloomed in ¼ c water)

MethodTart Crust:

Combine the flour, ground oats, sugar, salt, and citrus zest in the bowl of the food processor and mix together. Slowly pulse in the cubes of cold butter, until the butter is coarsely cut into the flour. Whisk the egg and pour it into the course butter/flour mixture, a little at a time, using the

pulse button until it is incorporated. Remove the dough from the

bowl and work in any extra dry ingredients including the ¼ c whole rolled oats. Freeze the dough for an hour. When it's ready to be worked with, carefully cut thin slivers from the ball of dough and push them into a tart tin, fitting them together like a puzzle.

Refreeze the shell once it is formed in the tin for about 30 minutes before blind baking the shell. To blind bake the tart shell, set the oven to 325 degrees. Cut a large section of

parchment paper and place it over top of the tart shell filling, in the shell with dried beans.

Bake the shell filled with dried beans for 45 minutes at 325. Allow it to cool at room temperature while you make the filling.

Blueberry Filling:In a medium sized sauce pot

combine six pts of the washed blueberries and the sugar. Cook over medium heat for 30 minutes stirring often.

After 30 minutes, turn off the heat and stir in the blueberry jam and the remaining two pts of blueberries. Stir together often for the next five minutes allowing the residual heat to soften the blueberries.

Fold in the bloomed gelatin and allow the mixture to cool at room temperature for another 20 minutes. When the tart shell and the filling are cooled fill the tart with the blueberry filling and refrigerate until ready to serve.
