I was honored and excited to start my new position as Executive Director of Arts NC State on July 1, 2015. The best part is that one year later, I am even more impressed with the faculty, staff, students, academic classes and programing at Arts NC State. I’m proud to be part of guiding the arts on campus, which are available to all NC State students regardless of major.

The performances, exhibitions, workshops, classes, residencies and outreach that I could

highlight are nearly endless. In 2015-2016, we truly lived up to our motto, “At NC State, the Arts are for Everyone.” (see sidebar)

Arts NC State initiated and participated in a myriad of impressive and impactful collaborative events. The fall season kicked off with a two-week BANDALOOP (dance company) residency that was sponsored by Morgan Stanley and included financial support and/or participation from the NC State University Foundation, Aloft Hotel Executive Team, City of Raleigh, organizers of SPARKcon, and departments across campus. These types of amazing collaborations continued throughout the year and are already being planned for 2016-2017.

We, along with our patrons and performers, celebrated being back in the newly renovated Stewart Theatre after a two-and-a-half year hiatus during the Talley Student Union renovation and expansion. The new seating, cosmetic and safety code upgrades, renovated dressing rooms, and a new office suite enhance the treasured venue and provide for a more enjoyable performance experience.

The other big facilities news is that the construction and renovation of the new Gregg Museum of Art & Design that started in mid-June 2015 is expected to be completed in fall 2016. With a tentative opening in April 2017, the Historic Chancellor’s Residence is being turned into a state-of-the-art museum. The addition, a 15,000 square foot space for galleries and collections wing, along with renovations of the Chancellor’s Residence, will allow for wonderful new types of arts programming.

To help us continue funding projects like the Gregg, we are pleased to welcome Jill Orr as the new Director of Development. We would also like to give a sincere thank you to members of the Friends of Arts NC State Board of Advisors and Friends of the Gregg for their continuous support of Arts NC State.

I am pleased to welcome several other new members of the Arts NC State family. We hired our new Marketing Director, Mark Tulbert, and you may have already seen his newest publication, the beautiful and innovative #creativestate magazine. We also welcome as the new Music Department Head Dr. Dan Monek. I’d like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Tom Koch for his role as Interim Director of Music during this transition. Dance Program Director Robin Harris retired in June after 30 years working with and leading the dance program. Robin received numerous accolades for her teaching and choreography and we will miss her! We are delighted that Assistant Director Tara Mullins accepted the Dance Director position effective August 15, 2016.

From voicing the role of the train conductor in University Theatre’s production of “Leading Ladies” to playing drums with the NC State Jazz Ensemble and everything in between, 2015-2016 was a remarkable year for me to experience Arts NC State. Thank you for being a part of it!

Sincerely,

Rich Holly, Executive Director

The Gregg Museum of Art & Design shared its art collection through various collaborations and exhibitions at many loca-tions throughout the community and state, such as the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, the NC Pottery Center, and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte. It is esti-mated that over 27,000 visitors saw the objects at the Bechtler! The Gregg was recognized for these traveling exhibitions, specifically, for their exhibition “Life’s Little Dramas: Puppets, Proxies and Spirits” at the D.H. Hill Library Gallery. For this exhibition, the Gregg won two Gold Awards for Excellence from the North Carolina Museums Council.

All NC State Students are Welcome to Participate in the ArtsStudents who participate in the arts at NC State represent majors from all over campus. Those participating in theatre productions are no exception, as they are involved as actors, set designers, stage managers, dancers, costumers and more. In the Performance and Production Lab THE 398 class, students produced an original play titled “Story Spirits: Ghost Stories from Around the World.”

Collaborating and Implementing New Technologies and Trends Arts NC State continues to collaborate with the Triangle community and on-campus to work with students and experts from all academic areas to utilize and appreciate the newest trends and technologies in the arts.

The Gregg Museum of Art & Design, with a $10,000 grant from Bayer Crop Science, has begun working with professors in Plant and Microbial Biology and Horticultural Science for students to design and install a pollinator garden at the new Gregg.

Highlighting Current Issues and Educating Through the Arts

Arts NC State played an active role in Earth Month and focusing on environmental issues at NC State this year. With a grant from the NC State Sustainability Fund and participation from departments across campus, the Music Department presented “The Great Animal Orchestra Symphony” and “Peter and the Wolf(Pack)” both under the direction of conductor and faculty member Dr. Peter Askim. Askim also premiered his composition

“…the green earth new.” “The Great Animal Orchestra Symphony” composer, Richard Blackford, attended the event

and participated in a panel discussing science and arts. Prior to the concert, campus researchers and local organizations held a well-attended sustainability showcase outside the theatre. Harry Shearer (The Simpsons/Spinal Tap) narrated the “Peter and the Wolf(Pack)” performance and participated in fundraising events.

The Crafts Center presented an art exhibition to explore envi-ronmental issues by bringing the “Disappearing Frogs Project” to the Crafts Center, an exhibition that raised awareness of environmental stresses on this bellwether of species. And, in conjunction with the exhibition, National Geographic photogra-pher Robin Moore gave a presentation and book signing on his research, “In Search of LOST FROGS.”

RELEVANTART

Through the program I was empowered to become an entrepreneur myself, giving me the resources and opportunities to conceptualize and strategically innovate within multiple arts disciplines.

Transforming Public Spaces and Fostering ImaginationFall 2016 marked the opening of the newly renovated Talley Student Union and transform is exactly what NC State LIVE did!

NC State LIVE presented the pioneering vertical dance company BANDALOOP for an intense two-week residency, which included performing at the Talley Student Union Grand Opening Dedication Ceremony by hanging from ropes from the ceiling and using the vertical walls on all four levels of the lobby as their stage. The dance company also presented numerous workshops with NC State students, high school students and community members, held open rehearsals, pop-up performances, demonstrations, two pubic performances in Stewart Theatre, and culminated the residency with an outdoor performance on the face of the new Aloft Hotel in Raleigh as part of the community event SPARKcon 2015.

Researching the ArtsIn addition to all the classes, performances, lectures, work-shops and exhibits, Arts NC State is also involved in and dedicated to cutting-edge research that will inform and guide our future academic focus and decisions.

Robin Harris (Dance Director), Tara Mullins (Assistant Dance Director), Ashley Walls White (dance student and Ph.D. in Mathematics candidate) and Dr. Fay Cobb Payton (Associate Professor, Computer Information Systems in the Poole College of Management) collaborated on a year-long research project, STEM Majors, Arts Thinkers, that was presented at the Amer-ican College Dance Association Mid-Atlantic Conference and for the Beijing Delegation. This project was funded by a grant from the NC State Foundation. Current students in the Dance Program as well as alumni participated in interviews, focus groups and surveys.

Arts NC State is grateful for another incredible year of providing accessible, relevant and transformative art and experiences to NC State University, the community and state.

In September, the Friends of the Arts NC State Board of Advisors nominated and bestowed the Bowers Medal of Arts to retired Vice Provost for Arts NC State, N. Alexander Miller III.

We especially want to recognize new fundraising successes that will enable Arts NC State to continue to offer its existing programming along with new initiatives.

Last academic year, the Arts NC State Development Team concluded its most ambitious project to date: raising $4 million to make possible the new home of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at the site of the Historic Chancellor’s Residence.

We raised a total of $1.12 million in new commitments in 2015-2016.

• Dr. Norman Greenberg Brass Quintet Endowment: Drs. Norman and Gilda Greenberg, who are among Arts NC State’s most generous supporters, made another major commitment to Arts NC State of $30,000 to support brass quintets within the Music Department.

• Robin Harris Dance Program Endowment: More than 50 alumni and friends gave $32,000 to create an endowment in honor of Robin Harris, who retired in June after serving as Director of the Dance Program for 30 years. The endowment will support, among other initiatives, student participation in the American College Dance Association conferences and festivals.

• Jerry and Nina Jackson Endowment for Outdoor Programs: Jerry and Nina Jackson built upon their Gregg Campaign gift to name the new museum’s formal garden with an endowment that will support the Gregg’s outdoor programs and performances.

• Bob and Sarah Jordan gift to the Gregg Building Campaign: Bob Jordan, a generous NC State alumnus, made a second major contribution to the Gregg Campaign with a gift of $27,000. He and his wife, Sarah, made their first major contribution to the campaign in 2012.

• Morgan Stanley sponsorship of BANDALOOP: Morgan Stanley sponsored the September 2015 residency of the vertical dance performers, BANDALOOP, presented by NC State LIVE.

Thank You from ARTS NC STATE
