Cowra-area sculptor Ken Hutchinson arrived in

Wirksworth, Derbyshire, England at the end of

August and ensconced himself in all things stone

and carving. Wirksworth is a post-industrial town with a history of quarries and mills, now a hub of cultural activity

and home to the annual Wirkswoth Festival. Ken will

be joined in September by 11 others artists from our region for a residency of

workshops, collaboration, performance and sharing.

EXPORTING OUR CREATIVE PRODUCT

The Australian Pavilion at the Wirksworth FestivalSharing arts experiences from the NSW Central West with Derbyshire, UK. A project of Arts OutWest.

This September a dozen artists and creatives from Central West NSW will set up ‘The Australian Pavilion’ at the Wirksworth Festival in Derbyshire, England. The team from Arts OutWest is taking over the Derbyshire Eco Centre, putting artwork on the Art and Architecture Trail weekend - which draws crowds of over 10,000 - and hosting a theatre double bill in the town. Before and during the festival artists will also be running workshops, getting hands-on and involving themselves in local art projects in Derbyshire.

The majority of the team arrives on September 1 for the festival that runs September 6-22. Cowra’s Ken Hutchinson arrived at the end of August and has been working with local stone carvers and with local artists on their projects with young people with disabilities.

The focus is on collaboration and our Australian artists will be working closely with a dozen or so UK artists on a range of projects from contemporary performance to community workshops for children in care.

The Australian artists are:performers Adam Deusien and Alison Plevey (Lingua Franca, Bathurst), Kim Deacon (Hill End); visual artists Harrie Fasher (Oberon), Ken Hutchinson (Cowra), weaver Lanny McKenzie (Orange), Nyree Reynolds (Blayney); film maker Christine Sweeney (Bathurst), writer and festival creator Merrill Findlay (Forbes); plus Arts OutWest staff Aleshia Lonsdale and husband Tony Lonsdale (who are both visual artists), Christine McMillan (also

a visual artist) and Tracey Callinan (who has promised to pick up an accordion and share her musical skill).

More than two dozen music acts from the Central West will also feature on the Australian Pavilion Playlist of music especially compiled for the festival opening party at the Derbyshire Eco Centre.

“Collaboration renews energy and motivation in the remote life of a regional artist,” said Harrie Fasher. “This interaction creates a greater sense of possibility within your own personal practice.”

“As a young performance company in regional NSW we are eager to engage in a creative dialogue with artists, arts workers and presenters in Derbyshire, and to demonstrate the quality of regional Australian performing arts,’ Alison Plevey from Lingua Franca said.

We owe a huge thanks to the team at the Wirksworth Festival and Derbyshire County Council who have been amazing in making the project happen and welcoming our artists. Thanks also to the participating artists who’ve got together for numerous planning meetings and dug deep to get themselves to England.

Country Arts Support Program 2014The State Government’s Country Arts Support Program (CASP) provides small grants to arts and community organisations in regional NSW for local arts projects.CASP grants are for small amounts of money - typically $500 to $1500 - and are available primarily to cover professional artist’s fees, travel and accommodation. Any incorporated group can apply (if you’re not incorporated you can use a group that is to auspice your application).The Country Arts Support Program of Regional Arts NSW is funded by the NSW Government through Arts NSW.Groups in Central West NSW region wishing to apply for the funding should read the guidelines carefully and must discuss their project with Arts OutWest before submitting an application.

Orange Oral History Weekend

Band workshops, stained glass window making and a weekend of oral history skills are three of the local projects funded in 2013 through the Country Arts Support Program (CASP). In Lithgow, a series of workshops for brass band members forged new friendships and skills.“The workshops to date have exceeded our expectations with participation of musicians from several other bands including Orange, Liverpool, Penrith, Blue Mountains. The guest MD, Aubtin Namdar is engaging and challenging all to play better,” Lithgow Band president Don White said.The musicians will showcase their development in a concert Saturday August 31 at the Lithgow Band Hall.

Central West Libraries’ Oral History Weekend Experience Seminar and Workshop at the start of August inspired groups from around the State to get working on their own oral history projects. The event was hosted by with support from the Oral History Association Australia NSW and their trainers Trish Levido and Sandra Blamey. The packed program included best practice standards, guidelines, review of digital equipment, interview, listening and narrator practice as well as planning an oral history project framework. People travelled from Canberra, Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Oberon and the surrounding local district to participate.

The 37 students at Mullion Creek

School north of Orange have been learning the art of stained glass window making with glass artist Sharon Cloete. The students are designing and constructing, with help of parents and community members, six beautiful new windows for the Catholic Church of Mullion. The church building is a key meeting point for the small village. The ‘One Community a Coloured View’ project was instigated by Mullion Creek P&C on behalf of the community, using a $2500 CASP grant.“The children did a lot of research and rough copies of what they thought would make a good stain glass window and represent the surrounding area of Mullion,” explained parent and Mullion Creek P&C member Mandy Dening.“The children are really enjoying this challenge and doing something that will always be on show in the local community,” Ms Dening said.

Renewing empty spaces: Marcus Westbury to talk in ForbesEmpty shops and commercial spaces are something few towns are short of. Forbes Shire Council have invited Marcus Westbury, founder of Renew Australia, to present “Making the most of empty spaces” in Forbes on September 2. Mr Westbury will discuss ways local communities can embrace the Renew model within their own communities to activate empty shop spaces into creative business spaces and opportunities. Hill End artistsDubbo’s Western Plains Cultural Centre have curated an exhibition of works by Hill End artists Julie Williams, Janet Haslett and Genevieve Carroll. This exhibition presents three artists’ distinctly individual responses to the remote, historically charged village of Hill End. Carroll’s autobiographical work is a meditation on still life, mortality and bees. Haslett attempts to explore painting through the 1870s Holtermann Collection photographic archive. Williams’ paintings from Hunts Creek Parramatta and Hill End continue her rigorous exploration of relationship between the natural and built environment. See it at WPCC until 13 October.

New gallery space in BathurstFive local artists have teamed up to present the Tablelands Artists’ Co-operative Gallery in Bathurst. Opening soon the gallery will be at 148 Russell Street Bathurst (next to the Fair Trading office). Keep an eye out.

Bushranger ballads inspired author Trevor Shearston to write his new book Game about the last days of legendary bushranger Ben Hall. Trevor Shearston spoke about his new novel in August at Books Plus in Bathurst and at Orange and Forbes libraries.

Curatorial Professional Development ProgramLast month our Aboriginal Arts development Officer Aleshia Lonsdale joined colleagues from around the state for five days of intensive curatorial and visual arts training at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Bathurst Sings!Half a dozen of Bathurst’s choirs got together on a Saturday afternoon for the first Bathurst Sings event. Oragnised by Arts OutWest and held in the light-filled Flannery Centre, the relaxed program featured U3A Singing for Pleasure group, the Cathedral Men’s Choir, the Sounds Live Choir, Sing Australia, Panorama Chorus and the Allegri Singers. The groups are keen to make it an annual event.
