A REPUTATION FOR INNOVATION > CHEVIOT CONCRETE GRAVITY SUBSTRUCTURE

The FEED design for this novel hybrid platform allowed the use of a standard jack-up drill rig in 155m water depth, the ability to utilise dry production trees and significant oil storage within the substructure.

We shape a better world

Arup provides a multi-disciplinary service focused on energy sector companies engaged in upstream activities from exploration and extraction to transmission and distribution. Projects are undertaken worldwide and range from the smallest assessments through to major projects.

We have provided project management and specialist services to the oil and gas industry for more than 20 years, and have a well-deserved reputation for innovation and the successful transfer of technology from industry to industry. We combine an understanding of client’s business objectives with a level of technical and commercial expertise that helps us deliver real business and project benefits. We offer clients solutions based on sustainable, economically viable, efficient resource utilisation.

At Arup we specialize in the design of topside and substructure facilities for offshore oil & gas projects and have developed two innovative solutions that minimise the combined cost of topside fabrication, substructure and installation:

ARUP CONCEPT ELEVATING (ACE) PLATFORM

Arup’s award-winning range of fixed platform solutions for varying environmental and functional criteria. They are self-installing and re-locatable platforms which operate as moveable offshore gas production units for water depths up to 110m. ACE platforms have been specifically developed to combine the advantages of traditional fixed platforms with the flexibility offered by a mobile unit. They are particularly economical where several reserves are to be exploited or in less mature oil and gas provinces. This product highlights our integrated design approach, with each platform individually tailored to meet client’s needs. At the end of their operational life the ACE platform can be completely removed for recycling.

CONCRETE GRAVITY SUBSTRUCTURE (CGS)

Arup pioneered the concept of dry build CGSs with the design, construction and installation of the Ravenspurn North platform installed in the southern North Sea in 1989. We have since designed and delivered four of the eight installed around the world. The CGS is designed to be economical to construct and can be entirely constructed and pre-commissioned in almost any dry dock, substantially reducing construction costs. It is simple to install and at the end of its operational life the CGS can be removed and taken from the field for reuse, recycling or disposal.

> YOLLA ACE

The platform, the size of half a football field and weighing the equivalent of six jumbo jets was installed in Australia’s Bass Strait on 25 March 2004 after an 8,000km journey from Batam where it was fabricated.

>> HANG TUAH

The platform was successfully installed in 82m water depth in the West Natuna Sea, Indonesia on 20 April 2001. It was the first ACE platform to be commissioned.

< ALL CONCRETE LNG TANK

The tank eliminates the need for a liner in the primary container and utilises a simple and cost- effective water vapour barrier on the secondary wall. Savings are achieved through design simplicity, speed of construction and avoiding the cost of specialist sub-contractors.

LNG

Arup Energy provides a wide range of services to the LNG industry including receiving terminals, innovative tank designs and onshore and offshore storage solutions. Our designs encompass liquid storage options, including LNG, ethylene, butane, propane, crude oil and condensate.

Services include:

• concept studies and economic appraisals

• environmental, siting and safety studies

• tank design

• material selection and specification

• heating and draining design

• long-term performance monitoring, inspection and assessment

PIPELINE SERVICES

The design, construction and commissioning of both cross-country and sub-sea pipelines and associated facilities requires the broadest range of skills and experience in order to provide solutions which balance sensitive environmental issues with safety and cost issues.

We provide clients a one-stop service for pipeline projects with our ability to deliver an entire project. Alternatively we can offer clients access to one or more areas of specialist expertise. At Arup we have a reputation for innovation, flexibility and collaboration with others in order to achieve common project goals.

Services include:

• route selection

• technical and economical evaluation

• geotechnical and geophysical interpretation

• detailed design of pipelines, crossings and landfalls

• design of above ground installations (AGIs) and compressor facilities

• construction planning and scheduling

• cost estimation and control

• construction management

• commissioning

• operations and maintenance

• reassessment and refurbishment.

> CONNAH’S QUAY

The gas pipeline is a 2.6km long, 750mm diameter high pressure link between the Transco National Transmission System (NTS) and the 1400MW CCGT power station.
